The eight books in this selection answer very different bird questions. For a practical behavior reference, start with Peterson Reference Guide to Bird Behavior. For hummingbirds, choose The Glitter in the Green; for urban habitat, The Bird-Friendly City; and for a Maine-centered species overview, Birds of Maine. The list also includes a caracara narrative, a breeding-behavior survey, a romantic comedy and literary essays.
That mix matters: these are not eight interchangeable field guides. The descriptions below show what each book can teach, the kind of reading experience it offers and where its geographic or subject boundaries lie. Publication formats and dates are those reported by BirdWatching’s roundup, originally published April 6, 2021 and updated August 15, 2024; prices and availability may have changed.
First, match the book to the question you actually have
Use the table as a quick filter, then read the individual entries for scope and trade-offs. “Reference” means a book organized to explain or consult; “narrative” means the author’s travels and observations carry the structure; “literary” means personal essays; and “fiction” means the bird science serves a story rather than a reference purpose.

Books for understanding bird behavior
Peterson Reference Guide to Bird Behavior — John Kricher
This is the most direct choice when “bird behavior” is the main search term. John Kricher’s reference is organized around the mechanisms and recurring patterns that shape a bird’s life: annual cycles, feathers and flight, social behavior, pair bonding and nesting. That range makes it useful for a reader who wants a framework rather than a single species story.
The emphasis on annual cycles connects behavior to time: migration or other seasonal changes can be considered alongside plumage, social relationships and reproduction. Sections on feathers and flight address the physical side of behavior, while pair bonding and nesting move into social and reproductive decisions. Because the book is described as a reference, it is the better fit for dipping into a topic, checking terminology or building a broad foundation than for following one continuous journey.
Choose it if you want breadth across behavioral subjects. Choose The Love Lives of Birds instead if your interest is specifically courtship and breeding examples, or A Most Remarkable Creature if you prefer one animal’s natural-history narrative.
The Love Lives of Birds: Courting and Mating Rituals — Laura Erickson
Laura Erickson’s book narrows the lens to reproduction. The roundup reports a survey of breeding behavior in 35 bird species, illustrated by Veronica B. Lilja. That species-by-species approach is suited to readers who want to compare how courtship and mating rituals differ, rather than study behavior across every part of the annual cycle.
The reported count of 35 species belongs to the 2021/2024 roundup description and has not been independently checked here. Treat it as a guide to the book’s stated scope, not as a current ornithological census. The illustrations add a visual dimension, making this a natural present for a reader who enjoys behavioral detail presented with artwork.

It is not a replacement for the broader Peterson reference: its subject is breeding behavior, not feathers, flight or social life in general. It also differs from Odd Bird, where courtship research appears inside a fictional plot.
Odd Bird — Lee Farnsworth
Odd Bird is the outlier for readers who want bird behavior inside fiction. Lee Farnsworth’s 2020 romantic comedy follows a protagonist who studies bird courtship behavior. The scientific subject supplies the character’s work and the story’s setting, but the book’s purpose is entertainment rather than instruction.
That distinction helps set expectations. A novel can make courtship research memorable and approachable, yet it should not be used as a reference for identifying behavior or comparing species. Pick it when you want a lighter entry into the subject, a change of pace after technical reading or a story in which ornithology affects a character’s relationships.
A close look at hummingbirds and one remarkable species
The Glitter in the Green: In Search of Hummingbirds — Jon Dunn
Jon Dunn’s book is the clearest match for a hummingbird-focused search. It is described as a journey through the range of hummingbirds, combining travel with encounters with birders, scientists and other people connected to these birds. The result is an experiential route into the group rather than a compact identification manual.
The geographic idea is important: “range” signals movement across the places where hummingbirds occur, while the human encounters show how observation and research shape knowledge about them. Readers who want the feel of expeditions, conversations and field discovery should start here. Readers seeking a technical behavior reference should pair that interest with Kricher’s book instead.

Because the roundup lists a 2021 hardcover edition, verify the edition and format before buying. The roundup did not establish a current price or stock status.
A Most Remarkable Creature — Jonathan Meiburg
Jonathan Meiburg’s narrative centers on the Striated Caracara. The description combines the bird’s history and possible future with the author’s travels through parts of its range and visits to captive settings. That gives the book a focused species perspective: one bird becomes a way to examine natural history, place and conservation uncertainty.
This is a strong choice when you want a sustained story rather than a survey of many species. It is also a useful counterpoint to the hummingbird book: both are travel-led narratives, but one follows a group across its range while the other concentrates on the history and prospects of a single caracara species.
The phrase “possible future” signals that the book considers what may happen to the Striated Caracara, not that it offers a universal forecast for birds. Readers looking for practical identification coverage should choose a field guide outside this list.
Books about habitat, place and conservation
The Bird-Friendly City: Creating Safe Urban Habitats — Timothy Beatley
Timothy Beatley’s book addresses a question that species and behavior references do not: how can a city become safer and more welcoming for birds? It tours cities working to reduce urban risks and create habitats in built environments. The focus is therefore on planning, design and civic action rather than on identifying birds in the field.

Its city-to-city structure can help readers compare approaches without reducing the subject to a single backyard tip. The book is especially relevant to planners, educators, advocates and residents who want to understand why urban habitat requires coordinated decisions.

It should not be confused with a local species guide. The subject is the urban environment and the work cities are doing, not a complete list of birds in one municipality.
Birds of Maine — Peter D. Vickery, illustrated by Barry Van Dusen and Lars Jonsson
Birds of Maine is the location-specific option. Peter D. Vickery’s overview covers species alongside migration, status, abundance, distribution, geography and climate. The roundup reports that it covers all 464 species found in Maine; that figure is reported by the roundup and was not independently verified for this article.
The combination of distribution, geography and climate makes this more than a checklist. It is designed to place Maine’s birds in environmental and seasonal context. That makes it a sensible choice for a Maine resident, a visitor planning birding trips in the state or a reader studying how place affects bird populations.
Its geographic strength is also its boundary. A reader outside Maine may find the ecological approach valuable, but the species coverage is not a substitute for a guide to another state or region. The listed edition is a 2020 hardcover; current availability and pricing require a fresh check.

Birds as personal and literary experience
When Birds Are Near: Dispatches from Contemporary Writers — edited by Susan Fox Rogers
This collection gathers essays about writers’ experiences with birds and birding. Because it is edited and multi-author, it offers a set of perspectives rather than one sustained argument or one field method. The appeal is reflective: readers encounter the meanings people attach to observation, place and encounters with birds.
It is a good choice when you want literary variety, short-form reading or a bridge between birding and creative nonfiction. It will not provide the systematic behavior coverage of Kricher’s reference, the city-planning analysis of Beatley’s book or the state-by-state utility of Birds of Maine. Its value lies in showing how birding becomes memory, attention and personal narrative.
How to build a reading path
For a new birder
Begin with Peterson Reference Guide to Bird Behavior to learn the main behavioral categories. Follow it with The Glitter in the Green for a narrative journey, then use When Birds Are Near to see how observation can be written about in different voices.
For a habitat or conservation project
Start with The Bird-Friendly City if the project is urban. Add Birds of Maine when Maine is the geographic focus, using its migration, distribution and climate coverage to ground local questions. A Most Remarkable Creature can then provide a single-species case study in history and possible future.

Read The Love Lives of Birds for its reported comparison of 35 species, then consult the nesting and pair-bonding sections of Peterson Reference Guide to Bird Behavior for a wider behavioral frame. Choose Odd Bird when you want the same general subject encountered through fiction rather than reference reading.
For a book-club or mixed-interest group
Pair books with contrasting forms: The Glitter in the Green and A Most Remarkable Creature for travel narratives, The Bird-Friendly City for public action, and When Birds Are Near for personal essays. The contrast makes the central editorial point visible: “books about birds” can mean science reference, natural-history storytelling, planning, fiction or literary memoir.
What this list is—and is not
These eight titles are best understood as a reading menu organized around birds, not as a ranked set of field guides. Only some are designed for consultation. Others ask you to follow an animal, a journey, a city or a writer’s experience. Before purchasing, confirm the edition, format, price, retailer listing and availability because the dates and formats above come from a roundup updated in 2024, not a live catalog.
