Yellowstone was filmed in Montana and Utah—not at Yellowstone National Park. The real Dutton family ranch is Chief Joseph Ranch near Darby, Montana, but much of the first three seasons was filmed in Utah. Montana became the main production area from season four onward.
Where is the real Dutton Ranch?
Chief Joseph Ranch, near Darby in Montana’s Bitterroot Valley, is the real property used as the Dutton family ranch. The family-owned property describes itself as a historic landmark, guest ranch and working ranch. It is not in Yellowstone National Park. Chief Joseph Ranch’s official site identifies the property and its location.
The ranch FAQ names areas used in the series, including the lodge’s great room and kitchen, its porches, yard, helipad, armory, cabins, barns, corrals, arena, round pen and bunkhouse, as well as fields, woods, the cemetery, entrance and locations along the property’s Bitterroot River. This is a list of ranch features used for filming, not an episode-by-episode map. The ranch FAQ provides the full site-level list.
Which parts of Yellowstone were filmed in Utah and Montana?
The production’s footprint shifted over time. Regional tourism sources report that seasons one through three were filmed mostly in Utah, with Chief Joseph Ranch and some other scenes as exceptions. Montana became the primary filming location starting with season four.

#1 Best Overall
| Production period | Filming locations | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| Seasons one through three | Mostly Utah; the Dutton Ranch scenes and some other scenes were exceptions. | Utah supplied many production locations, but the ranch viewers recognize is in Darby, Montana. |
| From season four | Montana became the primary filming area. | Western Montana locations featured more prominently in the later production period. |
Visit Park City’s production overview names Utah Film Studios and communities including Coalville, Oakley, Kamas, Heber, Morgan, Francis, Springville and Echo among the Utah production areas. Those places are part of the show’s broader filming geography; they are not the location of the Dutton Ranch.
A Montana Arts Council publication reported that the show had filmed entirely in Montana since 2020 and mentioned Darby, Hamilton and Missoula during season four’s run. That is a historical account of production at that time, not a current schedule or guarantee about where any later work was filmed. The council’s Winter 2022 publication provides that historical context. For the regional overview of Montana filming, see Glacier Country Tourism’s Western Montana locations article.

Can you visit the Yellowstone ranch?
Chief Joseph Ranch does not offer tours unless you have a cabin reservation, according to its FAQ. A recognizable filming location does not automatically mean public access, so do not arrive expecting to enter the property without a reservation.
The ranch says visitors may take photos at its gate sign if they are courteous and do not block the driveway. During filming, security may stop gate photography to keep the entrance clear. Check the ranch’s current FAQ and reservation policies before planning a visit, since access and availability can change.
