Season 1 was filmed in Maui, Hawaii
The White Lotus season 1 was filmed primarily on the Hawaiian island of Maui, with the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea serving as the main real-life location for the fictional White Lotus hotel. HBO confirmed that production took place on Maui, while Four Seasons identifies its Wailea property as the resort used in the first season. [CITATION c001] [CITATION c002] [CITATION c003]
The hotel in the series is fictional. The real property is not called the White Lotus; it is the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea. Much of the season’s resort architecture, landscaping, pools, restaurants, guest-room interiors, cabanas, and surrounding beach setting came from the operating resort itself. [CITATION c004] [CITATION c005]
The principal filming location: Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea
The resort’s official address is 3900 Wailea Alanui Drive, Wailea, Maui, Hawaii 96753. It sits on the Wailea coast and fronts Wailea Beach, providing the tropical setting seen throughout the season. [CITATION c004] [CITATION c005]

The Four Seasons was more than a backdrop for a few establishing shots. The resort supplied the central environment for the story: the pool area, public spaces, restaurants, spa, guest accommodations, grounds, and beach access all helped create the fictional luxury hotel. Four Seasons has described the property as the real-life version of the White Lotus resort. [CITATION c003] [CITATION c004]
Production also used the resort as a practical base during the COVID-19 pandemic. Reports from the shoot indicate that cast and crew stayed together there in a controlled production bubble. That arrangement helped the series continue filming in Hawaii under the unusually strict health and travel conditions of late 2020. [CITATION c006] [CITATION c007]
How much of the resort was real?
The production did not need to build an entire hotel set. The Four Seasons provided the underlying buildings, rooms, landscaping, and resort infrastructure, while the production design team altered selected details to make the setting feel like the fictional White Lotus.
Reported changes included decorative elements such as bedding, curtains, and other room materials. In other words, the show combines a real luxury resort with production design rather than presenting the Four Seasons exactly as guests would encounter it. [CITATION c008] [CITATION c009]

Other reported season 1 filming locations in Hawaii
HBO’s official material confirms Maui as the season’s location but does not publish a complete scene-by-scene location list. The sites below come from secondary location research and reporting, so they are best understood as reported filming locations rather than a definitive HBO checklist. [CITATION c002] [CITATION c010] [CITATION c011]
Wailea Beach
Wailea Beach, immediately associated with the resort area, was reportedly used for multiple beach scenes. The beach appears in sequences involving Quinn, Tanya, Olivia, Paula, and Kai. Four Seasons independently confirms that its resort fronts Wailea Beach, making the connection between the hotel setting and the beach scenes straightforward even though the series does not identify every shot on screen. [CITATION c004] [CITATION c010]
Kahului Airport
The opening airport material, including the airport lounge sequence and the handling of the body box, has been reported as filmed at Kahului Airport. This attribution comes from location research rather than an official HBO location guide, so it should not be treated as an officially published complete production record. [CITATION c010]
Olowalu Landing
Olowalu Landing has been reported as the boat-arrival location in the pilot episode. In that sequence, guests meet the hotel manager before continuing toward the resort. As with the airport attribution, this is based on secondary location research. [CITATION c010]

Lānaʻi
Contemporary reporting about the production said that filming was planned at locations around Maui and included work connected with Lānaʻi, with some beach scenes reportedly shot there. Because this detail comes from secondary reporting, it is safer to describe Lānaʻi as a reported additional location rather than claim that HBO published a complete Lānaʻi shot list. [CITATION c011]
When was season 1 filmed?
Principal photography began in October 2020 in Hawaii under strict COVID-19 protocols. HBO announced the production on October 19, 2020, describing it as a six-episode limited series set at an exclusive tropical resort. [CITATION c001]
By November 21, 2020, reporting said the production was about halfway through filming at the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea. Work was expected to continue around Maui in December, including planned filming connected with Lānaʻi. [CITATION c011]
The completed season premiered on HBO on July 11, 2021. [CITATION c002]

Can you visit the White Lotus hotel?
You can search for and potentially book the real property under its actual name: Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea. There is no real hotel called the White Lotus. The resort remains an operating luxury hotel, and its official materials describe its Wailea Beach setting and resort amenities. [CITATION c003] [CITATION c004]
Staying there is not the same as visiting a film set or receiving access to every area shown in the series. Guest access, resort policies, room availability, rates, and any special experiences can change, so check the resort’s current information before making plans. Public beach access and resort access are also separate issues: Wailea Beach is a public beach, while the resort’s facilities and guest areas are subject to its own rules.
For a trip inspired by the season, the most useful distinction is:
- Stay at the filming-location hotel: Look for the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea, not “White Lotus Maui.”
- Visit the beach: Wailea Beach is the recognizable coastal setting associated with the resort and several reported beach scenes.
- Research peripheral locations: Kahului Airport and Olowalu Landing are reported production locations, but they are not presented here as official HBO attractions.
- Do not assume a tour is official: No reviewed source establishes that a commercial filming-location tour or package is endorsed by HBO.
What to watch or read after finding the location
If the location question has prompted a rewatch, The White Lotus season 1 DVD is a direct way to own the complete first season, subject to current regional availability and retailer terms. For viewers more interested in the show’s food, The White Lotus Official Cookbook offers a companion experience connected to the series’ Hawaiian, Italian, and Thai settings. These are optional fan products, not travel requirements.
Why the Maui setting matters to the story
Maui is not simply scenic background. The season’s resort geography creates a contained social world: wealthy guests, employees, local surroundings, beaches, boats, rooms, and public spaces repeatedly bring the characters into contact. Using a real resort allowed the series to make the hotel feel operational rather than like a collection of unrelated sets.

At the same time, the show fictionalizes the property. Its name, story, characters, décor, and dramatic events belong to The White Lotus; they should not be read as a literal depiction of the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea or as claims about the real hotel’s guests and staff.
Bottom line
The White Lotus season 1 was filmed mainly on Maui, Hawaii, with the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea serving as the principal filming location for the fictional White Lotus resort. Wailea Beach was used for reported beach scenes, while Kahului Airport, Olowalu Landing, and Lānaʻi have also been identified in secondary location research. The central hotel is real, but its name in the series is not.
