The best place to buy vinyl depends on the record you want. Start with Discogs for a particular pressing or hard-to-find title; Bandcamp or an artist’s or label’s store for independent releases; a major retailer or distributor for mainstream preorders; and specialist shops such as Amoeba Music or Rough Trade for curated selections. eBay can turn up lots and auctions, but listings require extra scrutiny. Before paying, compare the exact edition and condition alongside shipping, delivery timing, taxes, and returns.
Where to buy vinyl records online
These are starting points, not a universal ranking: stock, policies, and delivery options can change, and availability varies by country. The specific shipping examples below are U.S.-leaning. Choose a route based on the record and the trade-offs you are willing to accept.

Choose by the record you’re trying to find
For an exact pressing or hard-to-find record: Discogs
Discogs combines a broad release catalog with a global seller marketplace, making it a useful first stop when the edition matters as much as the album. WIRED’s April 18, 2026 guide reported around 12 million records for sale in the United States on Discogs. That is WIRED’s estimate, not an audited live inventory count, and a large marketplace does not make every listing reliable.
Match the listing to the release you want rather than relying on the album title alone. Inspect seller history, the stated condition, shipping origin and cost, and the delivered total before ordering. WIRED recommends particular care with expensive or rare purchases.

For independent releases: Bandcamp and direct artist or label stores
Bandcamp offers vinyl discovery alongside genre and location browsing. Artist and label pages can offer direct releases, previews on some release pages, or exclusive variants, according to WIRED. Check that the physical format is available—not just a digital edition—and confirm who is selling it and where it will ship from. Stock and shipping details belong to the individual release page.
Buying directly from an artist or label can make the route of the purchase clearer, but do not assume every Bandcamp listing is fulfilled by the artist or that a particular record is in stock. Check the seller and the listing’s shipping information.

For mainstream releases and preorders: Tower Records and distributors
WIRED describes Tower Records as offering vinyl and preorder listings, and notes that distributors also serve stores and consumers. A preorder is not the same as an in-stock record: check the stated release date, availability, fulfillment information, and delivered price for your location. A release date does not by itself tell you when an order will dispatch.
For a curated selection: independent and specialist record shops
Online specialist shops can offer selected stock and store-specific releases. Amoeba Music lists vinyl on its site and, as accessed September 28, 2026, advertised free shipping on music and movies within the U.S. with no minimum. That is a merchant offer observed on that date; it does not establish free shipping for other destinations or product categories.

Rough Trade sells records online, but its U.S. policy says orders may ship from the UK, Germany, or the U.S. If items in one order come from different locations, separate shipping charges may apply. Check each shop’s current terms and the origin of the items in your cart rather than assuming a specialist retailer has one warehouse or one shipping rate.
For uncertain bargains: eBay lots and auctions
eBay may surface collection lots, auctions, or unexpected finds, but a low asking price is not a reliable guide to the value or condition of what will arrive. WIRED cautions readers about expensive or rare marketplace purchases and describes lots whose exact contents may not be known until delivery. Read the full listing, inspect the available photos, and decide whether the uncertainty is acceptable before bidding or buying.

For local finds or no shipping: shops and artist merch tables
A local independent record shop lets you ask about stock and inspect a record in person. WIRED also points to artist merch tables as a way to avoid shipping and, sometimes, find special editions. Local availability and event stock are specific to the shop or performance; check ahead when looking for a particular title.

Two listings for the same album may be different pressings, conditions, or seller arrangements. Compare the same edition and the whole order rather than choosing from the headline price alone.

- Release and edition: Confirm the pressing, variant, or other release details match what you want.
- Condition and seller: Check whether the record is new or used, how its condition is described, and who is responsible for the listing and fulfillment.
- Delivered cost: Add shipping and check whether taxes or import duties may apply to your destination.
- Dispatch and delivery: Distinguish an in-stock item from a preorder or supplier item. A release date, dispatch estimate, and delivery estimate are different things.
- Returns: Read the policy for the specific retailer and destination, including who pays return postage and whether online purchases can be returned in a physical shop.
- What your purchase supports: If that matters to you, check whether the seller is the artist, label, independent shop, or marketplace seller.
There is no comparable current basket-price evidence here, so no store can be called the cheapest across the board. A fair comparison requires the same release, edition, condition, and delivery destination.
Rough Trade U.S. shipping and returns: policy estimates, not guarantees
Rough Trade’s U.S. policy provides specific timing and return terms. Treat these as the retailer’s policy estimates, not guaranteed delivery dates, and check the current policy and product eligibility before relying on them.
