“Buzzkill,” the 9-1-1 season 8 premiere, begins with Bobby Nash gone from the 118 and former captain Vincent Gerrard back in command. Bobby has resigned rather than simply walked away: he is consulting on the fictional firefighter drama Hotshots while hoping to reclaim his captaincy. Buck, fiercely loyal to Bobby and already wary of Gerrard, has the roughest adjustment. The premiere’s disaster hook is a swarm of millions of bees across Los Angeles, with a later Athena storyline that is a spoiler.
Bobby’s “retirement” is really a resignation and a detour
The plain-language version is that Bobby has retired from the 118. More precisely, he resigned as captain and accepted a consultant job on Hotshots, a fictional television firefighter drama. The new work gives him a professional outlet, but it is not his preferred endpoint: Bobby still wants his captaincy back.
That creates a split between Bobby’s public role and his personal goal. He is close enough to firefighting to advise a show about it, yet separated from the house and the crew he led. His absence is therefore an active source of tension, not a clean exit from the story.
Why Buck is struggling more than anyone else
Loyalty to Bobby
Oliver Stark, who plays Buck, said Buck is “quite set in his ways” and feels “very loyal to Bobby.” That loyalty makes the change at the 118 feel personal rather than administrative. Buck is not merely learning a new chain of command; he is watching the captain he trusts try to find a way back.
#1 Best Overall
Conflict with Gerrard
Gerrard’s return reopens Buck’s problems with authority. Stark said Buck “certainly butts heads with Gerrard in the first episode,” bringing back an earlier pattern in which Buck resists a commander he does not respect. Gerrard’s leadership and Bobby’s leadership represent very different working relationships for him, so Buck’s adjustment is likely to be the premiere’s main workplace fault line.
Eddie and Christopher’s absence
Buck’s emotional load is not limited to the station. Stark also described him as affected by Christopher’s absence and said Buck and Eddie lean on one another. That connection gives Buck a personal support system while the 118’s professional structure is being rearranged.

Spoiler-free setup: “Buzzkill” starts with a citywide bee emergency
The opening emergency sends the team into a swarm of millions of bees loose in Los Angeles. It is the kind of unusually large-scale threat that lets 9-1-1 deliver spectacle immediately, while the station’s leadership change supplies the character conflict underneath it.
TV Guide reported that showrunner Tim Minear and Ryan Murphy drew on the 1970s disaster films The Swarm and Airport 1975 for the premiere’s direction. The result is designed to move between mass-casualty scale and the crew’s more intimate problems.

Spoilers: Athena’s flight crisis
Stop here if you only want the setup. Beyond the bee swarm, the premiere escalates into a flight crisis involving Athena. That parallel emergency broadens the episode from a Los Angeles disaster to a threat in the air, giving Angela Bassett’s Athena a separate high-stakes track while the 118 deals with its new reality.
How the premiere’s storylines fit together
| Storyline | Central tension | What it adds to the premiere |
|---|---|---|
| Bobby on Hotshots | He has resigned but wants his 118 captaincy back. | A personal and occupational question about whether Bobby can return. |
| Buck under Gerrard | His loyalty to Bobby collides with Gerrard’s authority. | The station’s workplace conflict and Buck’s emotional adjustment. |
| Bee swarm in Los Angeles | Millions of bees create the opening mass emergency. | The large-scale disaster spectacle that launches the episode. |
| Athena’s flight crisis | A separate danger develops in the air. | A spoiler-level escalation that widens the episode’s scope. |
| Eddie, Buck and Christopher | Christopher’s absence weighs on Buck and Eddie. | The personal relationships that keep the ensemble grounded. |
The season’s larger direction
Minear said his goal for the season’s first movement was to get everyone working together and “put the house back in order.” That aim explains why the premiere pairs an extraordinary emergency with a leadership dispute and strained personal ties: the spectacle tests the team in the field, while Bobby’s resignation and Gerrard’s return test whether the 118 can function as a family and a workplace.
