Why is Dune 3 taking so long?
Villeneuve wants the third film to earn its place
Villeneuve has described the screenplay as close to finished but not something he wanted to rush. His standard is not simply completing a trilogy on schedule; he wants a return to the material to produce a stronger film than the previous one.
#1 Best Overall
“I want to make sure that if we go back there a third time that it’ll be worth it, and that it would make something even better than Part Two.”
He also warned that Hollywood can prioritize a date over the work itself: “The danger in Hollywood is that people get excited and only think about release dates, not quality.”
Rank #2
Is the film delayed or canceled?
The available production information points to deliberate development rather than cancellation or abandonment. A firm 2026 release schedule is in place, and the explanation for the extended timeline is Villeneuve’s quality-first approach to the script and filmmaking.
What is Dune: Part Three based on?
The concluding chapter of Villeneuve’s trilogy
Part Three is identified as the concluding film in Villeneuve’s Dune trilogy and is based on the novels of Frank Herbert. The source-material book most directly associated with this installment is Dune Messiah, so the edition you choose matters if you are buying or borrowing it.

Do you need to read Dune Messiah first?
No official announcement makes reading the novel a requirement. You can approach the movie as the next chapter after Villeneuve’s first two films; reading Dune Messiah beforehand is useful if you want the literary context behind the adaptation and are comfortable comparing a novel with its screen version.
Will Dune: Part Three be in IMAX?
Yes. The official North American schedule includes an IMAX release. That makes IMAX one of the confirmed theatrical presentation options, not a speculative format or a later upgrade.

Where was Dune 3 filmed?
Abu Dhabi and the Liwa desert
Legendary Entertainment and Abu Dhabi authorities announced Abu Dhabi as a principal production location, with filming planned for late 2025. Production materials identify the Liwa desert as part of the Arrakis setting, while Image Nation supported the production alongside the regional film authorities.
The location announcement establishes Abu Dhabi’s role in the production, but it does not by itself provide a complete list of every filming site or confirm the final screen time for each location.
