Netflix usually does not have a permanent Picture-in-Picture (PiP) button inside its player. On a compatible Android phone, Android tablet, iPhone, or iPad, start playing a title and then leave the Netflix app by going to the Home Screen or switching to another app. If your device, Netflix app, and plan support PiP, the video should automatically shrink into a movable floating window.
Tap the small window to display its controls. You can pause, seek backward or forward, return to full screen, close the window, move it to another corner, or resize it. If nothing happens when you leave Netflix, use the troubleshooting steps below rather than looking for a hidden in-player button.
How to activate Netflix Picture-in-Picture
On Android phones and tablets
- Open the Netflix app and start playing a movie or show.
- Swipe up from the bottom of the screen or press the device’s Home control to leave Netflix. You can also switch to another app.
- If PiP is available, Netflix will continue playing in a small floating window.
- Drag the window to move it. Pinch in or out to resize it.
- Tap the window to reveal playback controls, including pause, seeking, full-screen playback, and close.
Netflix lists Android 8.0 or later as the operating-system requirement for PiP on Android phones and tablets. The latest available Netflix app is also required, and Netflix warns that some individual devices may not support PiP even when they meet the Android version requirement.

- 720p resolution - View your favorite movies, shows and games in high definition.
- Alexa voice control - The Alexa Voice Remote lets you easily control your entertainment, search across apps, switch inputs, and more using just your voice. Press and hold the voice button and ask Alexa to easily find, launch, and control content, and even switch to cable.

- Supports HDMI ARC - Sends audio directly from the HDMI jack to a compatible soundbar or AV receiver, removing the need for an extra cable.
On an iPhone or iPad
- Make sure the iPhone runs iOS 14 or later, or the iPad runs iPadOS 14 or later.
- Install the latest version of the Netflix app.
- Start playing a title in Netflix.
- Go to the Home Screen or switch to another app.
- If the device and plan are eligible, Netflix should minimize into a floating PiP window.
There is an important plan restriction on Apple devices: Netflix says PiP on iPhone and iPad is available only with an ad-free Netflix experience. If you use an ad-supported plan, changing the iPhone or iPad setting will not override that restriction.
What the Netflix PiP controls do
When the floating video appears, tap it to show the controls. Depending on the device and app version, you can:
- Pause: Stop playback without returning to the Netflix app.
- Seek: Move backward or forward in the title.
- Move the window: Drag the video to a different corner or position.
- Resize the window: Use a pinch gesture to make it larger or smaller.
- Return to full screen: Tap the full-screen control to reopen the Netflix player.
- Close PiP: Tap the close control when you no longer want the floating player.
Netflix PiP is not working? Check these fixes
1. Check the Netflix plan first on an iPhone or iPad
For Apple-device users, confirm whether the account uses an ad-supported Netflix plan. Netflix’s current guidance says iPhone and iPad PiP is not available with an ad-supported experience. This is a plan limitation, not a setting that can be repaired through iOS or iPadOS.
2. Confirm the operating-system requirement
- Android: Android 8.0 or later.
- iPhone: iOS 14 or later.
- iPad: iPadOS 14 or later.
Meeting the version requirement does not guarantee support. Netflix notes that PiP may still be unavailable on some devices, including devices that run an otherwise compatible operating system.
3. Turn on Android’s Picture-in-Picture permission
On many Android devices, check the system permission using this path:

Settings > Apps > Special app access > Picture-in-picture > Netflix
Make sure Netflix is allowed to use Picture-in-Picture. Manufacturers may use slightly different labels or place the permission in a different location, so search the Settings app for Picture-in-picture if you do not see the path above.
4. Enable automatic PiP on iPhone or iPad
On an iPhone or iPad, open:
Settings > General > Picture in Picture
Turn on Start PiP Automatically. Then reopen Netflix, start a title, and leave the app again. Remember that this setting cannot bypass the ad-supported-plan restriction.
5. Update Netflix
Install the newest Netflix app version available for your device. An outdated app can prevent a feature from working even when the operating system and plan are eligible.
6. Force-close and reopen Netflix
Close Netflix completely from the recent-apps or app-switcher screen, then launch it again and retry playback. On Android, Netflix’s troubleshooting wording may refer to force-stopping the app; on iPhone and iPad, force-closing means removing Netflix from the app switcher.

7. Restart the phone or tablet
After checking the plan, operating system, permission, and app version, restart the device. Start a title again and leave Netflix from the Home Screen. If PiP still does not appear, the device may not support Netflix PiP even though it meets the general requirements.
At that point, contact Netflix Support. If the problem appears limited to the device rather than Netflix, the phone or tablet manufacturer may also need to help.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDoes Netflix PiP work in a browser?
Do not assume that Netflix’s mobile PiP behavior is identical to browser Picture-in-Picture. Netflix documents separate browser requirements for Windows, Mac, Linux, and Meta Quest, with different minimum browser versions and playback limitations. A browser may support Netflix playback without offering the same PiP feature or controls as the Netflix mobile app.
Some browsers or operating systems may provide their own PiP tools, but Netflix does not present those as one universal Netflix button. Availability and behavior can depend on the browser, operating system, device, and current Netflix support.
What about smart TVs, streaming devices, and game consoles?
Netflix supports playback across many smart TVs, streaming players, game consoles, phones, tablets, and computers. That does not mean every supported Netflix platform has PiP.

On a television or streaming device, PiP may be a manufacturer feature or a function of the device’s software rather than a feature built into Netflix. It may be absent, have different controls, or behave differently from mobile PiP. Check the television or streaming-device manual for its own multitasking or PiP capabilities.

Picture-in-Picture keeps Netflix in a small floating window on the phone or tablet while you use other apps. Casting and mirroring send or duplicate the phone’s video on a television or another display. They are separate workflows.
A compatible wired video adapter may help connect some iPhones or iPads to a compatible display, and Netflix documents supported casting devices and wired connections. However, an adapter does not create, restore, or replace the mobile Netflix PiP feature.

The short answer
There usually is no Netflix PiP button to find. Start a title, leave Netflix from a supported mobile device, and the video should shrink automatically. If it does not, check the Apple plan restriction or system PiP setting first, then verify the operating system, update Netflix, force-close the app, and restart the device.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the Picture-in-Picture button on Netflix?
Usually, no. On supported Android devices, iPhones, and iPads, start playback and leave the Netflix app. The video should automatically shrink into a floating window.

What devices support Netflix Picture-in-Picture?
Netflix lists Android 8.0 or later for Android phones and tablets, and iOS 14 or later for iPhone and iPadOS 14 or later for iPad. Netflix also says some devices may not support PiP despite meeting the operating-system requirement.
Why is Netflix PiP not working on my iPhone?
Netflix says iPhone and iPad PiP is available only with an ad-free Netflix experience. An ad-supported plan can prevent PiP from working even when the device settings are correct.
How do I turn on Netflix PiP in device settings?
On Android, enable Netflix under Settings > Apps > Special app access > Picture-in-picture. On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > General > Picture in Picture and enable Start PiP Automatically.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Netflix PiP is normally activated by leaving the app, not by pressing a button in the player. It requires a compatible device and current app; on iPhone and iPad, it also requires an ad-free Netflix plan.
