Hayden Panettiere returned briefly to acting before publishing a memoir in 2026 and dying that August at 36.
What happened to Nashville after the series ended?
Nashville premiered in October 2012 and concluded in July 2018 after six seasons and 124 episodes. ABC aired the first four seasons; CMT revived the series in 2016 for its final two. Connie Britton left as Rayna Jaymes during season five, while Hayden Panettiere’s Juliette Barnes remained one of the central figures through the drama’s conclusion.

The series followed fictional country stars Rayna and Juliette alongside Scarlett O’Connor, Deacon Claybourne and the rest of the Nashville music community. Britton received a 2013 Golden Globe nomination, Panettiere earned Golden Globe nominations in 2013 and 2014, and “A Life That’s Good” received a 2013 Emmy nomination.

Connie Britton (Rayna Jaymes)
Britton’s departure from Nashville became a pivot back toward prominent television roles. She played Debra Newell in Dirty John, Abby Clark in 9-1-1 and Nicole Mossbacher in The White Lotus. Later listings include Overcompensating (2025) and Rooster (2026), extending a screen career that moved between mainstream network drama and prestige projects.

#1 Best Overall
- With the backdrop of a thriving contemporary music scene, Nashville takes us into the cutthroat world of music and politics, showing what it really means to become a star and stay one.
Hayden Panettiere (Juliette Barnes)
Panettiere took a four-year acting break after Nashville ended. She returned as Kirby Reed in Scream VI (2023), her first major screen role after the hiatus, and published the memoir This Is Me: A Reckoning in May 2026.
The Associated Press and Us Magazine reported that Panettiere died in Greenville, South Carolina, on August 16, 2026, at age 36. A cause of death had not been made public in those reports. The AP also noted her public discussions of alcohol struggles and postpartum depression before her return to acting.
Rank #2
“Bursting with brilliance, shining so bright. I have no words for this sad song. Just heartbreak. I love you girl. Sleep easy now.” — Connie Britton, via Instagram, quoted by the Associated Press
Clare Bowen (Scarlett O’Connor)
Bowen carried the show’s musical spirit directly into her own career. She and her husband, Brandon Robert Young, formed Bowen*Young and perform internationally. Her self-titled 2018 album was followed by touring, while acting credits include Hungry Ghosts and Hallmark films. She remains one of the cast members most visibly connected to live music as well as acting.

Rank #3
Charles Esten (Deacon Claybourne)
Esten followed Nashville with roles in Tell Me a Story, Tell Me Your Secrets, Outer Banks—where he played Ward Cameron from 2020 to 2023—and Homestead: The Series. Music remains equally important: he tours, performs as a Grand Ole Opry artist and continues appearing in the live-performance world that defined Deacon.
Reflecting on the series, Esten said he would miss “the fellow cast members and the amazing crew that all became such great friends and made that beautiful show happen.”
Rank #4
Jonathan Jackson (Avery Barkley)
Jackson continued playing Lucky Spencer on General Hospital while working on Nashville. He left the soap in 2025, citing the Tennessee–California commute, and has continued a parallel practice of writing and music. His work with the band Enation remains part of that story, and The Eternal Poet and the Cosmic Drama is listed for September 2026.
Sam Palladio (Gunnar Scott)
Palladio’s screen work after the series includes the television drama Humans (2016–2018), Rebel (2021) and the feature film Bob Marley: One Love (2024). Because he both acted and sang on Nashville, his later career still occupies the same acting-and-music space, even as his credits have broadened beyond country television.
Maisy Stella (Daphne Conrad)
Stella grew from a child performer on Nashville into a feature-film actor. She appeared in My Old Ass (2024), earning the Critics’ Choice award for Best Young Performer, and later appeared in The End of Oak Street.
Are the Nashville stars still making music?
Yes, although not all in the same way. Bowen’s Bowen*Young performances and Esten’s touring and Grand Ole Opry appearances are the clearest continuing music careers. Jackson remains active through Enation and his writing, while Palladio’s post-show work still reflects his singer-actor profile. Together, they preserve the show’s musical legacy without recreating its fictional band lineup.
