Gotham City is fictional; when a story specifies its state, it is usually placed in New Jersey. Its exact location is often left vague, and different continuities and adaptations do not share one fixed map coordinate. The familiar connection to New York reflects Gotham’s history and inspiration, not a universal rule that Gotham is New York City.
Why New Jersey is the best short answer
DC’s 2024 overview of the locations of its fictional cities says that most sources which specify Gotham’s location place it in New Jersey. Examples it cites include a 1970s DC comics fanzine, Detective Comics #503 (1981), the Atlas of the DC Universe (1990), and the 2016 film Suicide Squad. That makes New Jersey the strongest general answer when a state is requested, rather than a definitive coordinate that applies to every version. DC’s 2024 location overview
Why Gotham is often associated with New York
The New York connection has both a historical and a naming basis. DC’s account says Batman was operating in New York before his city was named Gotham in 1941. The name itself also has a New York association: “Gotham” had been used as a nickname for the city, with DC tracing that usage to Washington Irving in 1807. Those links help explain why people often answer New York, but they do not erase the New Jersey placements in stories that identify a state. DC’s history of Gotham City
When Gotham got its name
Batman first appeared in Detective Comics #27 in 1939. DC dates the first naming of Batman’s city as Gotham to Batman #4 in 1941. The official Batman character page identifies Gotham as his city and lists the 1939 debut. Batman | Official DC Character

What to say when someone asks where Gotham is
- Best concise answer: Gotham is fictional and is usually placed in New Jersey when a story gives its state.
- If they mean New York: New York is a major influence and historical association, but not the consistent literal location across depictions.
- If they mean an exact map point: There is no single one that holds across all continuities; many stories leave the location unspecified.
