Maki’s mother is both complicit in the Zenin family’s mistreatment of her daughters and, in her final moments, apparently moved by affection for Maki. The scene does not resolve that contradiction: her warning before the warehouse is unexplained, and her last words do not erase her earlier conduct.
What happens in Maki’s final confrontation with her mother?
In Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 152, Maki finds her mother after the violence at the Zenin household. Maki asks why her mother told her to come back before she entered the warehouse. Her mother is too distraught to remember what Maki means. When Maki approaches, her mother repeatedly yells for her to stay back, and Maki kills her.

Later, the wounded Naoya is confronted by Maki’s mother, who appears behind him with a kitchen knife and stabs him. She dies from her own throat wound. Her final words are: “I’m so glad… I gave birth to you.” The chapter’s events are clear; the reasons behind her warning and her reactions are not.
Why did she tell Maki to come back?
The scene never supplies a definite explanation. Maki asks her mother what she meant, but her mother cannot recall the warning. It may have been an attempt to protect Maki, a panicked response, or something else; none of those explanations is confirmed. Treating it as a certain rescue attempt goes beyond what the exchange establishes.

Was Maki’s mother complicit in the abuse?
Yes, the scene’s emotional complexity does not make her a consistent protector. The Zenin family’s hierarchy constrained her, and she can be understood as a victim of that system. At the same time, she was complacent toward the harm Maki and Mai endured. Constraint helps explain the setting in which she acted, but it does not make her earlier conduct harmless.
What do her final words mean?
“I’m so glad… I gave birth to you” expresses affection, pride, regret, or some combination of these. It gives Maki’s mother a tender final moment, but it does not prove that she had always supported her daughters or that she had fully changed. A balanced reading allows her to feel love for Maki while still recognizing her failures.

What the scene leaves unresolved
- Her warning: Maki’s mother says “come back,” but the scene does not establish why.
- Her fear: Her cries for Maki to stay back show alarm, but do not explain its precise cause.
- Her final act and words: They complicate how she is understood without settling her motives or undoing her complicity.
The most careful interpretation is that Maki’s mother is morally compromised and emotionally complex. Her final affection matters, but the story leaves her motives partly unknowable rather than offering a clean redemption or a single explanation.
