There is still no confirmed U.S. release date for Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 2. The film’s planned August 16, 2024 theatrical release was pulled, and although Chapter 2 premiered at the Venice International Film Festival on September 7, 2024, no broad theatrical, streaming, premium-VOD, or home-video date has been announced as of August 12, 2026.
The short answer
Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 2 is completed and has been publicly screened, but it has not received a confirmed general U.S. release. Its original theatrical date—August 16, 2024—was canceled before the film opened commercially.
The most accurate description of its current status is unreleased to the general U.S. market and in distribution limbo. That does not prove the film has been permanently canceled. It means that no verified distributor announcement currently gives audiences a date for seeing it in cinemas, on a streaming service, through digital rental or purchase, or on DVD, Blu-ray, or 4K.
Horizon: Chapter 2 release timeline
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| June 28, 2024 | Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1 opened in North American theaters. |
| August 16, 2024 | The originally announced U.S. theatrical release date for Chapter 2. This date was later withdrawn. |
| July 10, 2024 | New Line Cinema and Territory Pictures announced that Chapter 2 would not open on August 16. |
| September 7, 2024 | Chapter 2 had its world premiere at the 81st Venice International Film Festival, in the out-of-competition section. |
| February 2025 | The film received further festival exposure, including an American premiere at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. |
| August 12, 2026 | No verified broad U.S. theatrical, streaming, VOD, or physical-media release date has been announced. |
Why was the August 16, 2024 release canceled?
The planned release was withdrawn after Chapter 1 performed disappointingly at the box office. New Line and Territory Pictures said the change would give audiences more time to discover Chapter 1 through its premium-video-on-demand availability and its eventual availability on Max.

That explanation applied to the strategy for helping viewers catch up with Chapter 1. It was not a confirmation that Chapter 2 would immediately stream on Max, nor did it establish a replacement date for Chapter 2.
Did Chapter 2 already premiere?
Yes—but only in the festival sense. The film’s world premiere took place at Venice on September 7, 2024. The official festival program identifies Kevin Costner as director and lists the film’s runtime as 190 minutes.
A festival premiere should not be confused with a normal commercial theatrical release. The Venice screening did not create a nationwide U.S. release date, and the later Santa Barbara screening likewise did not establish a streaming, VOD, or home-video schedule.
Is the movie canceled?
There is no verified evidence in the available reporting that Chapter 2 has been permanently canceled. At the same time, the film has remained without a public release plan for nearly two years after its original theatrical date.

Reports from April 2026 described the film as still lacking a release date, while other reporting characterized the project as frozen or without current release plans. Those reports support the wording “no announced release date” or “release remains in limbo”; they do not justify saying that the film will never be released.
Could it still come to theaters?
It is possible, but there is no confirmed theatrical booking or release window to report. A future announcement could involve a limited theatrical engagement, a wider theatrical run, or a direct release to a digital or streaming platform. Until the distributor confirms the format and date, each remains speculative.
Some release-date aggregator pages list possible categories such as cinema, 4K Blu-ray, DVD, Blu-ray, HBO Max, and VOD. Those category labels are not release announcements: no actual dates are attached to them, so they should not be treated as evidence that the film is scheduled for any of those platforms.
Will Horizon: Chapter 2 stream on Max?
There is no confirmed Max release date for Chapter 2. Max was mentioned in the 2024 announcement as part of the plan to help audiences discover Chapter 1. That statement did not promise that Chapter 2 would premiere on Max or specify when it might do so.

The official Warner Bros. campaign page located for the Horizon project is a 2024 promotional page and does not provide a current Chapter 2 release date. Readers should be cautious with pages or social posts that present Max, HBO Max, or another service as confirmed without a current announcement from the distributor.
What is the film about?
Horizon: An American Saga is Kevin Costner’s multi-chapter western about the expansion and settlement of the American West during the Civil War era. The larger story spans 1861 to 1865 and follows families, friends, and adversaries as the country is divided by war.
Chapter 2 is directed by and stars Kevin Costner. Its listed cast includes Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Jena Malone, Giovanni Ribisi, Luke Wilson, Isabelle Fuhrman, Abby Lee, Will Patton, and Ella Hunt. Costner and Jon Baird are credited as writers. The film was produced through Territory Pictures in association with New Line Cinema.
With a reported runtime of 190 minutes, Chapter 2 is a substantial feature rather than a short follow-up or behind-the-scenes installment.

What viewers should—and should not—expect
- Do not use August 16, 2024 as a current release date. It was the original planned date and was removed from the calendar.
- Do not describe the Venice screening as a U.S. theatrical opening. It was a festival world premiere in Italy.
- Do not claim that Max has confirmed the film. The 2024 Max reference concerned Chapter 1’s audience-reach strategy.
- Do not treat an aggregator’s platform categories as scheduled releases. A listing without a date is not confirmation.
- Do not say the film is permanently canceled. The available evidence shows an extended delay and uncertain distribution, not a definitive cancellation notice.
Where can you watch it now?
There is no confirmed general U.S. destination for watching Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 2 as of August 12, 2026. The verified public screenings were festival engagements, including Venice and Santa Barbara. No broad U.S. theatrical run, streaming debut, premium-VOD launch, DVD, Blu-ray, or 4K release date has been announced.
The situation could change if Warner Bros., New Line Cinema, Territory Pictures, or an officially announced distribution partner sets a new date. Until then, the answer to “When is it coming out?” remains: no date has been confirmed.
