She was crowned 16 months later, on Tuesday 2 June 1953, at Westminster Abbey. That distinction—accession first, coronation later—is the key to understanding a ceremony that was at once an ancient religious rite, a constitutional affirmation and the first British coronation carried into homes by television.
Accession and coronation were different events
At George VI’s death on 6 February 1952, Elizabeth automatically succeeded him as sovereign. No ceremony was required to make her queen. The constitutional change happened immediately, even though the public coronation was postponed.
The coronation took place at Westminster Abbey on 2 June 1953. Its purpose was to formalize and celebrate the monarch’s office through a public service, not to create the monarchy. The long interval allowed national mourning, preparation of the service and arrangements for an event involving thousands inside the Abbey and crowds across London.
| Event | Date | What it meant |
|---|---|---|
| Accession | 6 February 1952 | Elizabeth became sovereign on George VI’s death. |
| Coronation | 2 June 1953 | A public religious and constitutional ceremony affirmed the office she already held. |
Why Westminster Abbey mattered
Westminster Abbey supplied continuity. English and British monarchs had been crowned there for centuries, so Elizabeth’s service placed a new reign inside an inherited setting and ritual. The Abbey was also a constitutional stage: the sovereign’s relationship with the Church of England, ministers, peers and the public could be presented in one nationally visible occasion.

Archbishop of Canterbury Geoffrey Fisher conducted the coronation. The service included the anointing of Elizabeth and an oath concerning the Church of England. Those elements made the event explicitly religious, while the presence of state officials, peers, invited representatives and Commonwealth guests underscored its public constitutional character.
The available institutional accounts describe the central acts but do not provide every line of the order of service. It is therefore more accurate to identify the anointing, oath and homage than to claim a complete detailed sequence without consulting the original liturgical order.
The ceremony’s central acts
Anointing
Anointing was the service’s sacred centre. Elizabeth was consecrated with holy oil in a rite that connected her reign with biblical and medieval traditions. The act was deliberately private in visual terms compared with the rest of the service, reinforcing that the coronation was not simply a pageant or civic parade.
The oath
Elizabeth swore the coronation oath, including commitments concerning the Church of England. The oath expressed constitutional duties in a religious form: the monarch promised to govern according to law and established obligations rather than personal preference.

Homage
After the principal religious acts, senior churchmen and peers paid homage. Prince Philip was not crowned as king. The Royal Family’s account identifies him as the first peer to do homage after the Archbishops and Bishops, a role that acknowledged his position as consort without giving him a separate sovereign title.
The procession turned the service into a London event
The Abbey ceremony was only part of the day. A state procession carried the newly crowned queen through London, allowing people who could not enter Westminster Abbey to see her directly. The National Archives’ route map records the route and timings, while its educational account describes heavy rain and dense crowds along the way.
The Royal Family records 250 people in the Sovereign’s procession. That figure refers to the procession itself, not the number of people inside the Abbey or the millions who followed remotely. The route made the coronation a civic spectacle as well as a service: streets, viewing areas and official timings coordinated an audience spread across the capital.
Inside the Abbey: attendance and scale
The National Archives records 8,251 guests at Westminster Abbey, a figure also given in the Royal Family’s coronation facts. Abbey attendance was therefore substantial but necessarily limited by the building. Tickets could not accommodate anything approaching the population watching outside or at home.

That contrast between a controlled congregation and a mass public audience shaped how the day was experienced. Guests witnessed the rites in person; London crowds encountered the procession; people elsewhere depended on radio or television.
Why Elizabeth agreed to television
Elizabeth’s coronation was the first British coronation to be televised. The Royal Family states that television was included at her request. This was a significant choice: earlier coronations had been experienced primarily by those present, by newsreel audiences and by radio listeners, whereas live television could show the event as it happened inside private homes.
The broadcast decision required viewers to obtain television sets or gather where one was available. The Royal Archives reports that television licence holders rose from approximately 1.5 million to 3 million in preparation for the coverage. That is an institutional figure about licence holders before the ceremony; it should not be treated as proof that the coronation alone caused every increase, since other social and economic factors may also have contributed.
Television also changed the relationship between ritual and visibility. Some sacred moments had traditionally been shielded from public view, while cameras had to negotiate what could be shown respectfully. The result was a carefully framed broadcast that preserved the solemnity of the Abbey while making the occasion legible to viewers who had never attended a coronation.

How many people watched the coronation?
The Royal Archives estimates that 27 million people watched the coronation live on television in Britain—more than half the population. The National Archives independently gives the same UK television estimate. These are estimated viewers in Britain, not a worldwide total and not a measurement of every person who saw a later recording.
The Royal Archives also estimates that 11 million people listened on radio. Television viewers and radio listeners are separate audience categories. Adding the two figures would produce an unsupported combined total because households could have used more than one medium and the estimates were reported separately.
| Medium or setting | Reported figure | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Live television in Britain | 27 million | Royal Archives estimate, also reported by the National Archives; more than half the British population. |
| Radio listening | 11 million | Royal Archives estimate; a separate audience from television. |
| Westminster Abbey guests | 8,251 | National Archives and Royal Family historical records. |
These numbers explain why the 1953 coronation is remembered as a media landmark. The ceremony remained rooted in an Abbey service, but its immediate public reached far beyond the people who could obtain a ticket or stand along the route.

On the eve of the coronation, Elizabeth addressed the Commonwealth. She said: “Throughout all my life and with all my heart I shall strive to be worthy of your trust.” The sentence framed the forthcoming ceremony as a promise of service rather than a personal triumph.

In her evening broadcast after the ceremony, she recognized both the physical crowds and those who had followed remotely: “Many thousands of you came to London from all parts of the Commonwealth and Empire to join in the ceremony, but I have been conscious too of the millions of others who have shared in it by means of wireless or television in their homes.” The wording matters because it treats radio and television listeners as participants in a shared public occasion, while still distinguishing them from people who were actually in London.
The coronation dress as a surviving artifact
The Royal Collection Trust’s record of Elizabeth’s coronation dress provides a material anchor for the event. A dress can be examined long after speeches and crowds have disappeared, showing how the ceremony’s symbolism was carried through clothing as well as words and ritual. Its preservation also reflects the way the coronation has been documented through official objects, not only photographs and recollections.
Artifacts such as the dress help separate what can be directly studied from what must be reconstructed through memory. They belong to the same documentary record as the Abbey, route maps, tickets and broadcast transcripts: physical and written evidence of a single day designed to communicate continuity.
A practical timeline of 2 June 1953
- Preparation and arrival: invited guests assembled at Westminster Abbey while the procession was organized through London.
- Coronation service: Geoffrey Fisher conducted the religious service, including Elizabeth’s anointing and oath concerning the Church of England.
- Homage: Archbishops, Bishops and peers paid homage; Prince Philip was not crowned.
- London procession: the Sovereign’s procession, numbering 250 people, travelled along the recorded route amid rain and large crowds.
- Broadcasts: television carried the first televised British coronation, while radio provided a separate nationwide listening audience.
- Evening address: Elizabeth reflected on those present in London and the millions who had shared the day through wireless or television.
What made this coronation historically distinctive
Elizabeth’s coronation joined two forms of authority that are often discussed separately. The oath and anointing expressed inherited religious and constitutional obligations. The procession and broadcast made those obligations visible to a modern mass audience. Neither side replaced the other: television did not turn the service into entertainment, and tradition did not prevent the ceremony from using a new medium.

Elizabeth was already queen by accession; the Abbey service did not confer sovereignty. The 27 million television viewers were in Britain, the 11 million radio listeners were a separate estimate, and 8,251 people attended in person. Keeping those categories distinct shows how the 1953 coronation worked simultaneously as a constitutional rite, a London procession and a national broadcast.
