Prince Harry is known publicly by his title, not by a routinely used surname. The name people search for is usually the one attached to his dukedom, the Duke of Sussex, and that is a title rather than a family name. Where the Royal Family does need a surname for a member of its family, its official guidance gives it as Mountbatten-Windsor.
What Harry’s name is, element by element
Most confusion comes from treating every part of a royal name as if it were a surname. Harry’s name is easier to read when each element is separated.

Why “Sussex” gets mistaken for a surname
Titles and surnames are different kinds of name. A duke is addressed and identified by a place-based title, and that title is attached to the person rather than passed down as a family name. Because Harry is so often named in print as “the Duke of Sussex,” many readers assume the title works like a last name. The official material does not treat it that way.
How the royal naming convention works
The convention has three practical steps. They apply to members of the Royal Family entitled to the style and dignity of HRH Prince or Princess.

- Default use: Most such members do not need a surname. Their style and title are the form of name that is used.
- When a surname is needed: The Royal Family’s guidance states that the surname is Mountbatten-Windsor. It gives marriage as an example of a point when one may be needed.
- Title stays separate: A dukedom such as Sussex does not change into a surname when a surname is used. It remains the title.
The guidance on this point reads: “For the most part, members of the Royal Family who are entitled to the style and dignity of HRH Prince or Princess do not need a surname, but if at any time any of them do need a surname (such as upon marriage), that surname is Mountbatten-Windsor.” It describes the family’s naming convention; it is not a list of every document in which a name appears.

The Royal Family’s website and College of Arms material, checked as of October 2026, support three points: the general convention, Harry’s given names and dukedom, and the surname Mountbatten-Windsor for cases where a surname is required. They do not establish which name Harry uses on every private, legal or administrative record. A general convention is not proof of how a specific document was completed, so any statement about a particular form or register should come from that document’s own issuer.

Two further limits matter for readers:
- The official profile confirms his christened names and title. It does not list every name he has used in daily life.
- The convention describes the Royal Family’s own usage. It does not settle how institutions outside the family record names.
For most readers the useful answer is therefore narrower than a single word: Harry has given names, a public style, a dukedom, and a surname that applies only when one is needed. That surname is Mountbatten-Windsor.
