In May 2022, Insider reported that an unnamed contract flight attendant for SpaceX accused Elon Musk of exposing himself during a massage on a company-related flight in 2016 and offering to buy her a horse in return for sexual acts. Musk denied the allegations. The Guardian, The Washington Post and Gizmodo all noted limits on their ability to independently verify the account or its settlement details, so the allegations should not be treated as established fact.
What the flight attendant reportedly alleged
Insider’s account, summarized by other outlets, concerned a woman who worked as a contract flight attendant for SpaceX. She alleged that during a massage on a company-related flight in 2016, Musk exposed his erect penis and offered to buy her a horse in exchange for sexual acts. The coverage did not name the attendant.
The Guardian and The Washington Post described Insider’s report as drawing on interviews and documents, including a declaration by a friend of the attendant. Those outlets were relaying the same original report; their coverage does not constitute separate confirmation of the underlying account.
What was reported about the 2018 agreement
The Guardian reported that the attendant complained to SpaceX in 2018 and that a severance agreement in November of that year included a reported $250,000 payment in exchange for a pledge not to sue over the claims. The Guardian attributed those details to Insider. The private agreement was not reviewed by the Guardian’s account as described here, and Gizmodo said it had not independently verified settlement documentation. A reported payment or agreement does not establish that the alleged conduct occurred.
