Reubens later reconnected with Guy before Guy died of AIDS. Friends also recalled that Reubens had a loving partner near the end of his life, but the public accounts cited here do not identify that person or establish how long they were together.
The relationship Reubens described as defining
In the documentary Pee-wee as Himself, Reubens recalled falling in love at first sight with a painter named Guy after leaving CalArts. They lived together in an Echo Park apartment in Los Angeles. Reubens also credited Guy with influencing some of the voices and jokes in his performance. Vanity Fair’s May 23, 2025, account of the documentary recounts Reubens’s reflections; his sister, Abby Rubenfeld, identified Guy as Guy Brown in a 2025 interview with The Advocate.

Reubens described the relationship as intense. Looking back, he said that after it ended he felt he had lost his personality and sense of self within the couple. He later reconnected with Guy shortly before Guy died of AIDS. Reubens said he “never had another relationship that matched it,” according to Vanity Fair’s reporting. The available account does not give exact dates for the breakup or their reunion.
Why he kept his sexuality private
Reubens said he had been out before becoming famous, then returned to the closet as Pee-wee became a major career. He believed being openly gay would damage his prospects, saying, “My career would’ve absolutely suffered if I was openly gay.” The quote, reproduced by Vanity Fair from the documentary, describes Reubens’s view of the risk he faced; it does not establish what would have happened to his career under different circumstances.

Reubens said the breakup and his concerns about work helped shape his choice to avoid another relationship and focus on a career he felt he could control. That is his retrospective explanation, not an independent account of his motives. The distinction between the character and the person matters: Pee-wee’s public visibility did not mean Reubens had publicly shared his romantic life. Reporting by The Independent and the Los Angeles Times discusses the tension between his private identity and public image. Director Matt Wolf also told the Television Academy that bringing Reubens’s private life into the documentary was difficult for him.
What is—and isn’t—known about his other relationships
Reubens had close female friends and public companions, but public appearances and rumors are not proof of romance. The Independent characterizes Debi Mazar as a platonic friend, and the sources cited here do not substantiate the rumor that Reubens dated Valeria Golino.
For Reubens’s final years, Vanity Fair reported that friends described him as being in a loving relationship when he died. TIME quoted a close friend who recalled that Reubens genuinely liked the person and that the person cared for him, but could not remember how long they had been together. TIME’s May 23, 2025, account does not identify the partner. The reporting therefore supports the existence of a relationship, but not the partner’s identity, gender, or duration.

Pee-wee as Himself is the central source for Reubens’s own account of Guy, the breakup, and his privacy choices. Family and friends provide additional recollections, while director and reporter accounts supply context around material Reubens found difficult to discuss. The documentary drew on extensive interviews and archival material, but those production details do not fill in the undisclosed dates or identity of the later partner.
