Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery gives Benoit Blanc an apparently impossible church murder to investigate. But the film’s deeper problem is not a case Blanc cannot solve: it is Father Jud Duplenticy’s struggle to live up to his faith and calling. The distinction matters—the murder is the whodunit, while Jud’s moral and spiritual crisis supplies the story’s emotional stakes.
Is there a murder Benoit Blanc cannot solve?
Not according to the film’s official premise or Netflix’s ending explainer. The story sets Blanc on the trail of a seemingly impossible murder, but the title’s “one problem” is better understood as a thematic question than as a claim that the crime remains unsolved. The film’s mystery and its human conflict are related, but they are not the same thing.
In the setup, Monsignor Jefferson Wicks dies during a Good Friday service at a small church in upstate New York. Father Jud Duplenticy, a priest whose ideas about faith differ from Wicks’s, becomes a suspect. Blanc is drawn in to investigate what appears to defy logic. Netflix’s film overview describes the case and confirms that Daniel Craig returns as Blanc.
Why Father Jud is the story’s emotional center
Writer-director Rian Johnson has described Blanc as the detective who enters a story whose protagonist has the personal stakes. “The secret to each one of these movies is that Benoit Blanc is not the main character of these films. There’s always a protagonist who has some real stakes and skin in the game.” For this film, Johnson identifies Jud, played by Josh O’Connor.

Johnson says the film is “very much about Josh O’Connor’s Father Jud character, and him wanting to be a good priest, and how he achieves that or doesn’t at the end.” That aim makes Jud’s conflict more than a question of whether he is suspected of a crime. The film asks what it means for him to serve well when his beliefs and Wicks’s sharply diverge.
O’Connor describes Jud’s faith this way: “He believes in a loving God, a God that sees your faults and chooses to love them.” The contrast between that belief and the pressures surrounding Jud gives the story a spiritual dimension that a conventional detective puzzle would not have on its own. Netflix’s ending explainer discusses that dimension, but also reveals major plot details; it is best left until after viewing.

How the film uses the locked-room mystery tradition
The case’s apparently impossible circumstances connect the film to the locked-room mystery, a form built around a crime that seems to have occurred under conditions that rule out ordinary explanations. Netflix names John Dickson Carr as an influence, alongside G.K. Chesterton’s Father Brown mysteries and Agatha Christie’s Murder at the Vicarage. Those references help explain why the church setting is more than atmosphere: it places a classic puzzle structure alongside questions of belief, responsibility, and character.
The mystery tradition asks how a crime could happen; Jud’s story asks what kind of person he will be amid its consequences. Keeping those questions distinct is the clearest way to understand the film’s hook without mistaking its emotional stakes for an unsolved case.
