King Charles III’s 2025 Christmas message broke with the customary royal-residence setting: it was recorded at Westminster Abbey. The annual Christmas Day broadcast itself continued. The distinction matters because the speech’s venue has changed over time, while the address has remained a recurring part of the holiday tradition.
What changed in King Charles’s 2025 Christmas message?
Charles recorded his 2025 address at Westminster Abbey rather than at a royal residence. The prerecorded message aired on Christmas Day at 3 p.m. London time, according to Associated Press reporting.
AP connected the Abbey setting to the address’s theme of pilgrimage, noting the site’s links to coronations, royal weddings and pilgrimage in honor of Edward the Confessor. That explanation is AP’s account of the choice; no official statement from the King’s team explaining the 2025 venue is included in the available record. The location was a departure from the customary residence setting, not an end to the broadcast.
Where has the Christmas broadcast usually been recorded?
Buckingham Palace has been the usual setting, but it is not the only one. The Royal Family’s official history records broadcasts from Windsor and Sandringham as well. In 2003, George VI’s granddaughter’s broadcast? No—rather, the official history describes the message filmed at Combermere Barracks in Windsor as the first filmed entirely on location. The Royal Family’s history therefore shows a tradition with a customary setting, not a fixed rule that every address must come from a palace.

Charles had also chosen a setting away from a royal residence the year before. He recorded his 2024 Christmas message at Fitzrovia Chapel in central London. AP reported that the production team was asked to find a location with health connections, a community presence, and an atmosphere of solace and reflection. AP also reported that Elizabeth II’s last recording outside the royal estate had been in 2006. AP’s 2024 report describes that choice as unusual.
The two recent venues had different reported associations: Fitzrovia Chapel’s health and community connections in 2024, and Westminster Abbey’s pilgrimage theme in 2025. Two consecutive non-residence settings do not establish that future broadcasts will follow the same pattern.

How did the Christmas broadcast tradition develop?
| Year | Milestone |
|---|---|
| 1932 | George V delivered the first Christmas broadcast by radio from a small office at Sandringham. The Royal Family’s official history says he was initially hesitant about the relatively new medium, then reassured after visiting the BBC. |
| 1952 | Elizabeth II gave her first Christmas broadcast after becoming Queen. She spoke live by radio from her study at Sandringham and paid tribute to her father. In the official account, she said: “My father, and my grandfather before him, worked all their lives to unite our peoples ever more closely, and to maintain its ideals which were so near to their hearts. I shall strive to carry on their work.” |
| 1957 | The first televised Christmas message was broadcast live. |
| 1960 | Messages began to be recorded in advance so copies could be sent to Commonwealth countries and shown at locally convenient times. |
| 1969 | There was no Christmas broadcast because a repeat of the documentary Royal Family was scheduled for the holiday period. Public concern led to a written reassurance that the message would return the next year. |
| 2003 | The official history identifies the Combermere Barracks address in Windsor as the first message filmed entirely on location. |
| 2022 | Charles’s first Christmas broadcast as monarch was recorded at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, three months after Elizabeth II’s death and his accession. |
| 2024 | Charles recorded at Fitzrovia Chapel, away from the royal estate. |
| 2025 | Charles recorded at Westminster Abbey; the annual address aired on Christmas Day. |
The Royal Family’s official history covers the broadcast’s early chronology and format changes at its Christmas broadcast history. Elizabeth II’s first address is also described in the official 1952 account.
What did Charles’s first Christmas message as monarch say?
Charles’s 2022 broadcast, recorded at St George’s Chapel, reflected on grief and service. Its setting was close to where his parents are buried. In the transcript, he spoke directly about the absence of loved ones during the holiday season: “Christmas is a particularly poignant time for all of us who have lost loved ones. We feel their absence at every familiar turn of the season and remember them in each cherished tradition.” The full text appears in the official transcript.

That earlier message provides context for Charles’s first years as monarch, but it does not explain why Westminster Abbey was selected in 2025. The reported reason for the Abbey location is tied to the pilgrimage theme, as described by AP.

No. The 2025 message remained an annual Christmas Day address. The tradition has adapted before: it began as radio, moved to live television, and later used advance recordings to distribute the message more widely. The 1969 gap was a one-year interruption under Elizabeth II, followed by the broadcast’s return. The 2025 change was about where Charles recorded, not whether the message would be delivered.
