He meant a long stretch without a device; the phrase also has a commonly recognized sexual meaning, which made the remark jarring in coverage of a solemn religious event.
What did the CBS anchor say?
On May 7, 2025, during CBS Mornings coverage of the conclave’s opening day, CBS News papal contributor John Allen described cardinals reading their breviaries or praying the rosary while their devices were confiscated. Co-host Tony Dokoupil replied: “I believe the kids call it ‘raw-dogging it’ if you’re gonna go through a long period of time with no electronic device.” The Independent reported the exchange and quoted both men; The Recount also reproduced Dokoupil’s key wording in a clip page.
Dokoupil was describing the cardinals’ time without electronics. He did not say that the cardinals themselves used the phrase, nor was he describing a literal act. (The Independent; The Recount)
Why did the wording draw attention?
The Independent described “raw-dogging” as slang often used to refer to sex without protection. In the broadcast, Dokoupil supplied a different meaning: enduring a long period without an electronic device. The clash between that sexually suggestive association and the formal subject of a papal conclave is what made the comment sound incongruous.

The other contributors giggled, according to The Independent, which also reported criticism from some social-media users. That account describes selected reactions, not a measure of public opinion or evidence of a broader institutional fallout. (The Independent)
Were the cardinals without their phones?
Allen said the cardinals’ devices had been confiscated and that they might read their breviaries or pray the rosary. That is the context established by this exchange; it is not a complete account of Vatican conclave security rules or possible exceptions. (The Independent)

The Independent said it contacted CBS. The contemporaneous reporting cited here does not establish an official CBS response. The exchange is reported through The Independent’s account and The Recount’s clip page, rather than an independently verified CBS transcript.
