How common is online hate in Ireland?
A DCU Anti-Bullying Centre exploratory survey, published in February 2023, found that 45% of its respondents had experienced some form of online hate because of their personal identity or beliefs. The study surveyed 1,008 adults recruited through Irish web panels, with fieldwork conducted in October 2022. The figure describes respondents’ self-reported experiences under the report’s definition of online hate; it is not a current 2026 prevalence rate or a measure of every form of online abuse.
The same report found that just under half of respondents had witnessed online hate. Among witnesses who took action, 71% said they reported it to a website or social media company. These results also describe that survey’s participants and categories, not how effective reporting was. The DCU Anti-Bullying Centre report sets out the survey and its methods.

What can you do about online abuse?
The DCU survey records what participants said they did; it does not show that any one response works best in every situation. Respondents who acted commonly spoke to family or friends, reported communications to a platform, or blocked an account. Some who did nothing said they did not consider the incident serious enough, did not know what to do, or doubted that action would change anything.
Those findings point to several possible routes, without establishing their comparative effectiveness:

- Seek support: Talk to family or friends if you want help dealing with what happened.
- Use platform controls: Consider reporting the communication to the relevant website or social media service, or blocking the account.
- Consider further help where the conduct is serious: The survey does not provide step-by-step advice for contacting authorities. If you need to report a particular incident, consult current official guidance appropriate to your circumstances.
Professor James O’Higgins Norman of DCU Anti-Bullying Centre told the Joint Committee on Children and Equality on 5 February 2026: “The central message we wish to convey is that online safety cannot be reduced to simple debates about screen time or technology bans.” In the same committee evidence, he identified concerns including cyberbullying and peer harm, image-based sexual abuse, coercive or pressurised sexual communication, appearance-related distress, misogynistic and extremist content, and effects on sleep and wellbeing.
