The Lion Project says their work supported hundreds of Venezuelan immigrants, including help finding housing and essential resources. The exact documentary title and where it can currently be watched have not been established.
Who were the Highland Moms?
Highland Moms were Denver-area neighborhood volunteers who organized practical support for newly arrived migrant families. They were part of a broader volunteer response, not a formal government agency or a single-service nonprofit. The Lion Project’s May 16, 2024 account describes their efforts supporting hundreds of Venezuelan immigrants, though that figure is the organization’s description rather than an independently audited count. The Lion Project’s account connects the group’s work to a documentary video, but does not establish its exact title, runtime, filmmaker, or current viewing channel.
How did Denver volunteers help migrant families?
Housing was a central need, alongside the immediate essentials of daily life. Denverite’s January 9, 2024 reporting describes volunteers distributing tents, shoes, diapers, medicine, food and other supplies; helping arrange medical appointments and paid work; and advocating for families. The response was sustained through neighborhood coordination, including online groups and direct contact with families.
The scale of need exceeded what informal volunteers could solve. The University of Denver’s account of migrant mutual aid describes networks coordinating meals, donations, translation, rides, medical support, legal services, housing and job connections as formal agencies faced strain. New arrivals also encountered language and service-navigation barriers, while Denver’s existing housing crisis made finding a place to stay harder.

Why did mutual aid become so important?
For some newcomers, navigating services was difficult because of language barriers or eligibility requirements. Volunteers could respond quickly with direct assistance, but informal aid was not a substitute for durable housing, public services or professional support. Denverite reported that volunteers experienced burnout and that online groups brought limitations and risks as well as coordination. The work depended on sustained labor from people who were often learning how to respond as the crisis unfolded.
Numbers from that period should be read as dated snapshots, not current totals. Denverite reported that the Highlands Facebook group had more than 1,000 members by mid-November 2023 and nearly 5,000 when its January 2024 story was published. The University of Denver described more than 32,000 migrants from Venezuela and other South or Central American nations arriving in Denver over the preceding year; that is the university’s framing for the period, not a current count.

Is this the same film as Welcome Strangers?
No. Welcome Strangers is a separate 2020 short documentary, 21 minutes long, about Sarah Jackson, Casa de Paz and asylum seekers released from detention near Denver. Its subject is hospitality and family reunification after detention, not the Highland Moms’ neighborhood response to Venezuelan arrivals. The film’s official synopsis describes that distinct story.
