If your college cancels a course or discontinues a program, get the decision and its academic and financial effects in writing before changing your schedule or borrowing plans. If the entire school is closing, act quickly to preserve records and compare any teach-out or transfer offer; federal student-loan discharge may be available in some circumstances, but it is not automatic.
First, identify what has been canceled
The next steps depend on whether the college canceled one class, ended an academic program while remaining open, or is closing altogether. A course or program change usually calls for answers from the institution about degree progress, charges, and aid. A whole-school closure can also trigger federal closed-school loan-discharge rules and require attention to academic-record custody.
What to do when one course is canceled
- Save the notice. Ask the college to confirm the cancellation’s effective date and reason in writing.
- Ask how you can stay on track. Contact the department chair or academic adviser about replacement sections, approved substitutions, independent study, or a revised course sequence. Ask how each option affects your expected graduation date, and get any substitution or exception approved in writing.
- Check your enrollment and degree status. Ask the registrar whether the change affects registration, full-time status, prerequisites, progress-to-degree, or academic standing.
- Get an itemized account update. Ask the bursar whether tuition, fees, or course-specific costs will change and when. Request an itemized statement rather than assuming a credit has already posted.
- Check financial aid. Ask the aid office whether a revised course load affects your eligibility, satisfactory academic progress, or enrollment reporting. The answer depends on your circumstances and the rules for your aid.
- Use the school’s appeal route if needed. If you cannot get a workable answer, follow the institution’s published grievance or appeal process and ask which dean, ombudsperson, or student-affairs office handles the matter.
There is no universal federal course-cancellation remedy established by the sources cited here. Check your college’s catalog, refund policy, and applicable state rules. Federal withdrawal rules should not be treated as though they automatically govern a class the college itself canceled.
What to do when a degree or certificate program is discontinued
Ask the institution to explain in writing what will happen to students already enrolled. Request the applicable deadlines, course availability, and an individualized degree audit showing exactly what remains.

Federal sources cited here do not establish a nationwide right to a particular replacement class or refund when a college ends a program. The institution’s policies and any applicable state requirements matter.
If the entire college is closing, preserve your records
Download or request copies while school systems are available. Keep them somewhere outside the college’s systems, which may become inaccessible.

| What to compare | What to ask |
|---|---|
| Credits and requirements | Which credits transfer, and how many count toward core requirements, general education, or electives? |
| Remaining work | Which courses and other requirements will you still need to complete? |
| Time and cost | What is the expected time to finish and the total likely cost? |
| Practical fit | Are the schedule, location or delivery mode, and course availability workable for you? |
| Accreditation or licensing | Does the option meet requirements relevant to your educational or career goal? |
| Loan implications | Could accepting the option affect your eligibility for federal closed-school discharge? |
The Department of Education says, “There is no single factor that determines program comparability.” Its guidance identifies factors including the program’s nature, course requirements, treatment of transfer credits, and views of state or accrediting agencies. It also advises borrowers to understand how many credits will count toward the receiving program. See the Department’s transfer-student guidance.
A teach-out or transfer may give you a route to finish, but accepting one means you remain responsible for your student loans. A qualifying borrower who declines may be able to seek federal loan discharge. Compare the academic and financial terms and check your own eligibility before deciding.

How federal and private student loans may be affected
Federal loans
Federal Student Aid says a borrower may be eligible for discharge of Direct, FFEL, or Perkins Loans if the school closes while the borrower is enrolled and the borrower cannot complete the program because of the closure, or if the school closes within 120 days after the borrower withdraws. Eligibility is individual, and discharge is generally unavailable if the borrower completes a comparable program through a teach-out, by transferring earned credits or hours, or by another comparable means. Check the current Federal Student Aid closed-school guidance and contact your loan servicer rather than assuming you qualify.
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau says borrowers may apply for an earlier discharge after the Department confirms the closure; otherwise, qualifying borrowers may receive discharge one year after the closure. Continue required payments while an application is being processed, consistent with Federal Student Aid’s instructions. See the CFPB’s guidance on loans after a school closes.

Private loans
Private student loans generally remain payable after a school closes. Contact the lender about your loan and ask the state licensing agency whether a state program applies; federal closed-school discharge rules do not by themselves resolve private-loan obligations.
Keep tuition refunds separate from federal aid calculations
A tuition credit or refund does not by itself determine what happens to grants or loans. Under the 2026–2027 Federal Student Aid Handbook, Volume 5, Chapter 1, a school’s institutional refund policy and its Return of Title IV Funds calculation are separate processes. When a qualifying withdrawal occurs, the school separately calculates earned and unearned federal aid; a tuition refund does not determine the amount of Title IV aid earned. If a school action affects your enrollment, ask the aid office whether you are considered withdrawn and request the calculation and account treatment in writing.
