Suge Knight’s reported account of Tupac Shakur’s final hours is a set of personal recollections, not new evidence identifying who ordered or carried out the 1996 shooting. The separate allegation involving Sean “Diddy” Combs came from Duane Davis, who was convicted of first-degree murder in 2026; Combs denied responsibility, and reporting says no known evidence of his involvement goes beyond Davis’s account.
What did Suge Knight say about Tupac’s final hours?
In a July 1, 2025 report on an interview with People, The Daily Beast recounted Knight’s claims about what happened after Tupac was shot. Knight said Tupac asked him to kill him, fearing he would go to prison because of an earlier casino fight. Knight recalled the plea as: “Kill me. Shoot me.” Those words are reported through Knight’s account to People; they are not presented as a recording or an independently corroborated statement.
Knight’s account of Afeni Shakur’s decisions
Knight also claimed Tupac’s mother, Afeni Shakur, was willing to honor her son’s wishes for a quick, painless death. He said she told medical staff not to revive Tupac if complications arose and directed that he be cremated. These are Knight’s recollections of private conversations and decisions, as reported by The Daily Beast; that account does not independently establish them as fact.
What is established about the 1996 shooting?
The Associated Press reported on August 5, 2026, that Tupac was shot in Las Vegas on September 7, 1996, while riding in a car driven by Knight. Knight was wounded. Tupac died six days later, aged 25.

What was alleged about Diddy, and what did the court decide?
The allegation linking Combs to the killing is distinct from Knight’s reported account of Tupac’s final hours. Duane Davis alleged that Combs offered him $1 million to kill Tupac and Knight. Combs denied responsibility. The Ringer reported on September 23, 2026, that there was no known evidence of Combs’s involvement beyond Davis’s version of events. Davis’s allegation, and his conviction, do not establish that Combs made such an offer.
Davis’s conviction did not identify him as the gunman
Davis was convicted of first-degree murder on August 31, 2026. Prosecutors did not accuse him of firing the shots. CBS News reported that Davis described a white Cadillac carrying him, Orlando Anderson and two other men pulling alongside Tupac and Knight’s car. The defense disputed the prosecution’s narrative and the evidentiary basis for Davis’s statements. The conviction is a court outcome in Davis’s case; it is not proof of the separate allegation against Combs.

A former detective’s response to the verdict
In The Ringer’s September 23, 2026 feature, former LAPD detective Greg Kading, author of Murder Rap, reflected on Davis’s conviction: “Obviously I was proven wrong,” Kading told the outlet in early September. “That’s a good thing. … Anytime somebody gets convicted of a crime they probably committed, there’s a sense of justice.” That is Kading’s view of the verdict, not a court finding about Combs or the identity of the person who fired the shots.
