For most people streaming to Kick from a desktop, start with OBS Studio: Kick provides setup instructions for it, and OBS is free, open source, and flexible enough for custom scenes and audio. Choose Streamlabs Desktop if you prefer an integrated onboarding and built-in creator tools such as alerts, widgets, and overlays. Kick also lists XSplit and MELD as supported options, but the official material cited here does not establish a feature or price ranking for them.
Choose software based on how you want to produce your stream
| Your priority | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Flexible scenes and granular production controls | OBS Studio | The OBS Project lists scene and source mixing, transitions, audio filters, Studio Mode, hotkeys, and plugin and script support. It describes OBS as free and open source. |
| An integrated workflow with built-in creator tools | Streamlabs Desktop | Streamlabs describes Desktop as an all-in-one studio with alerts, widgets, overlays, and highlights, and provides a Kick workflow. |
| A different supported desktop application | XSplit or MELD | Kick lists both among supported applications. The official pages cited here do not establish enough current detail to rank them against OBS or Streamlabs. |
Kick’s May 22, 2026 setup guide names OBS, XSplit, Streamlabs Desktop, and MELD among the streaming applications it supports. That is a support list, not a claim that every application has identical features or setup steps.
Check compatibility before installing
OBS Studio
The OBS download page lists Windows 10 and 11, macOS 13 or newer, and Linux as supported platforms. The page reports OBS version 32.2.2; its captured listing identifies the release as August 14 but does not display a year. Check the current download page for the latest version and requirements before installing.
Streamlabs Desktop
Streamlabs’ May 20, 2026 quick-start guide lists minimum requirements of Windows 11 or macOS 12, 8 GB of RAM, and 10 GB of storage. Requirements can change, so confirm them on Streamlabs’ current download page.

Set up OBS or Streamlabs for Kick
OBS Studio: enter Kick’s server and key
- Get the connection details. In your Kick dashboard, locate the server URL and stream key for your channel. Treat the key like a password: Kick warns that anyone who has it can broadcast to your channel.
- Open the stream settings in OBS. Go to Settings > Stream, choose Custom…, then enter the server URL and stream key from Kick.
- Set and check your video and audio. Use the Kick limits in the next section as ceilings, then choose settings your encoder, computer, and upload connection can sustain.
- Start the broadcast. Start streaming in OBS and check the Kick channel to confirm the stream is live. Kick says the VOD is saved to the channel page after you stop streaming.
Streamlabs Desktop: connect your account
- Open Streamlabs Desktop and go to the Stream tab.
- Connect your Kick account using the available Kick workflow.
- Check that the selected encoder settings comply with Kick’s limits, then start streaming and verify the broadcast on your Kick channel.
Use encoder settings within Kick’s limits
Kick’s May 6, 2026 connection troubleshooting guide gives these platform ceilings and compatibility rules. A ceiling is not a recommended target for every setup: your computer, encoder, and network determine what you can sustain reliably.
| Setting | Kick guidance |
|---|---|
| Video encoder | x264 or H.264; H.265 is not supported |
| Rate control | CBR; VBR is unsupported |
| Video bitrate | Up to 8,000 kbps |
| Resolution | No more than 1920Ă—1080 |
| Frame rate | No more than 60 fps |
| Audio | Stereo, up to 48 kHz |
- Do not assume a higher bitrate or resolution will improve a stream if your connection or encoder cannot sustain it.
- Kick says Mac users should use x264 to enable CBR.
- Pick a stable configuration within the limits rather than treating the maximum values as a universal preset.
Troubleshoot a connection that will not go live
- Confirm the key and server URL. Recheck the current details in the Kick dashboard and make sure they are entered in the correct fields in your encoder.
- Reset key, old key still saved: resetting the stream key invalidates the saved one. Replace it in OBS or Streamlabs with the new key before trying again.
- Encoder rejects the stream: check that video uses x264 or H.264 and CBR, and that resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and audio stay within Kick’s published limits.
- Connection still fails: update OBS or Streamlabs, then check whether your computer or network is blocking the connection.
- Protect the channel: never share the stream key publicly. If someone else may have obtained it, reset it and update your encoder.
When a cloud service is—and is not—the right fit
OBS and Streamlabs are software choices for producing a live broadcast from your desktop. StreamNeo solves a different problem: it keeps an uploaded-video stream running on YouTube from the cloud. It does not stream to Kick and does not go live from a camera, so it is not a substitute for OBS or Streamlabs when your goal is to stream gameplay, a live camera, or a desktop production to Kick.
