To turn on YouTube ads, your channel must be eligible for monetization and have accepted the Watch Page Monetization Module; then use the stream’s Monetization controls in YouTube Studio. To add a sponsor, agree on the branded segment separately, disclose the paid relationship in YouTube’s content settings, and make the disclosure noticeable to viewers during the stream.
Choose between YouTube-served ads and a sponsor
YouTube-served ads are selected and delivered by YouTube’s ad system. A sponsor segment is a message or endorsement arranged between you and a brand. The distinction matters: switching on ad monetization does not book a sponsor, and agreeing to a sponsor does not turn on YouTube’s ad inventory.
| Question | YouTube-served ads | Sponsor segment |
|---|---|---|
| Who chooses the message? | YouTube’s ad system. | You and the sponsor agree on the message and deliverables. |
| Where do you set it up? | YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, under the stream’s Monetization settings. | Arrange the partnership with the sponsor, then mark paid promotion in YouTube’s content settings. |
| What should viewers know? | YouTube controls ad delivery; an enabled ad opportunity does not mean every viewer sees an ad. | Viewers should be able to notice the sponsorship disclosure in the stream itself. |
How do I turn on ads for a YouTube livestream?
Check channel eligibility first
To earn Watch Page ad and YouTube Premium revenue from a livestream, the channel must be monetized and must accept YouTube’s Watch Page Monetization Module. In YouTube Studio, open Earn and check which modules and monetization options are available to your account. Eligibility and available features are account-specific; do not assume every channel can enable live ads. YouTube describes the Watch Page Monetization Module as necessary for ad and YouTube Premium revenue from long-form or live content viewed on the Watch Page (YouTube Help: Choose how you want to monetize).
Enable monetization for the stream
- Open YouTube Studio and select Create > Go live.
- Start a stream from the Stream tab, or schedule one from Manage.
- In the Live Control Room, open Edit > Monetization.
- Set monetization to On, then choose the live ad settings you want.
When live monetization is on, pre-roll and display ads are automatically enabled. If your channel is monetized and does not have rights management, YouTube says you can set channel-level defaults for future livestreams. Channels with rights management do not currently have those defaults; check YouTube’s current live monetization guidance for the account-specific controls.

Which mid-roll setting should I use?
Live mid-rolls can be automatic, scheduled, or manual. Choose based on how much control you want over timing and whether you can manage interruptions while live.
| Mode | Timing and control | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic | YouTube selects natural breakpoints. You can delay automatic breaks for 10 minutes during an important moment. | Least live management; YouTube says automatic mode includes protections intended to limit interruptions during some high-engagement moments. |
| Scheduled | Set an interval of 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 minutes. | Predictable spacing, but a scheduled break may not match a natural pause in your program. |
| Manual | Insert each break yourself from the Live Control Room while streaming. | Most direct timing control, but you must remember to insert breaks. YouTube warns that earnings potential may be lower than with automatic mode; if you insert no breaks, no manual mid-rolls are served. |
Automatic: let YouTube find breakpoints
YouTube recommends automatic mid-rolls. Its help page reports “over 20% average uplift in instream ad revenue per hour — YouTube, January 2024.” This was an observed group comparison covering 207 countries in January 2024 between channels that enabled live automatic mid-rolls and channels that did not; it is not a promise of earnings for an individual channel. Automatic mode also includes protections such as limiting interruptions for channel members, temporarily pausing ads for viewers who send certain paid chat messages, and snoozing breaks during high-engagement moments. These protections do not mean every important moment will be interruption-free.

Scheduled: set an interval
Choose a scheduled interval in the Monetization controls if regular spacing matters more to your production than waiting for a natural pause. The available intervals are 6, 12, 18, 24, and 30 minutes. Consider the pace of your stream: an interview or documentary discussion may have fewer clean breaks than a format built around recurring segments.
Manual: insert breaks during the broadcast
Use manual breaks when you need to decide exactly when to offer an ad opportunity. Insert each one from the Live Control Room while the stream is running. If you do not insert one, YouTube says no manual mid-roll ad will be served. An optional Elgato Stream Deck plugin can insert ads, according to YouTube’s documentation, but it is not required: the basic setup and controls are in Studio (YouTube Help: Monetize your live stream).

Delay automatic breaks for an important moment
During an automatic mid-roll setup, you can delay automatic breaks for 10 minutes when you do not want a moment interrupted. The on-screen countdown indicates when breaks will resume. Manually placed breaks still display while this delay is active, so do not insert a manual break during the delay if you intend to suppress ads.
How often should I run mid-roll ads?
There is no interval that guarantees a particular revenue or viewer response. If you want YouTube to look for natural breaks and reduce some interruptions around engagement peaks, start with automatic mode. If your format has a consistent rhythm and you want predictable spacing, choose one of the scheduled intervals. Use manual mode when exact placement matters and someone can actively manage the Live Control Room. In every mode, a break is an opportunity for YouTube to serve an ad, not a guarantee that each viewer will receive one.

Think about the viewing experience as well as the settings. A break during a key reveal, performance, or explanation can disrupt the reason someone is watching. Use the automatic delay during a significant moment when automatic mode is selected; with manual mode, place breaks at natural transitions.

Agree on the segment with the sponsor
A sponsor relationship is arranged directly between you and the brand. Agree on what you will say or show, when the segment will run, any required deliverables, and which claims are approved. YouTube’s paid-promotion setting is a disclosure aid, not a sponsor marketplace or a way to negotiate or receive sponsor payment.

Mark the stream as paid promotion
In YouTube’s content settings, identify paid promotion such as product placement, sponsorship, or endorsement. YouTube’s branded-content policy applies to livestreams, and creators remain responsible for disclosures. See YouTube Branded Content Policies for the platform’s policy and setting details.
Disclose clearly during the livestream
For U.S. audiences, FTC staff guidance says a material connection can include payment, a free or discounted product, or another perk. Use plain, noticeable wording such as “ad” or “sponsored,” and repeat the disclosure periodically so people who join late hear it. The FTC’s *Disclosures 101 for Social Media Influencers* says: “If making an endorsement in a live stream, the disclosure should be repeated periodically so viewers who only see part of the stream will get the disclosure.” (FTC, November 2019.)
For example, say “This segment is sponsored by [Brand]” when the segment begins and repeat the disclosure periodically during a long stream. If a brand provided a product for free, an accurate disclosure could be “Thanks to [Brand] for providing this product for review.” Do not imply you personally used or endorse a product if that is not true. Avoid relying only on the description, assuming viewers already know about the relationship, or treating YouTube’s paid-promotion label as the entire disclosure. FTC guidance is U.S.-specific; disclosure law can differ in other jurisdictions.
The FTC’s 2023 Endorsement Guides Q&A addresses YouTube ads that obscure a disclosure: a disclosure hidden by an ad is not clear and conspicuous. It describes a continuous, clear disclosure throughout the entire stream as a safe approach (FTC Endorsement Guides: What People Are Asking).

What viewers experience when ads are enabled
- An ad slot is an opportunity, not a guarantee: YouTube does not serve an ad to every viewer at every break.
- Viewers who do not receive an ad continue watching. Viewers who do receive one rejoin after it ends or is skipped.
- An embedded livestream with autoplay on an external website has ads turned off.
YouTube also lists Super Chat, Super Stickers, and channel memberships as livestream earning options. They are separate features—not substitutes for enabling ad monetization or arranging a sponsor—and depend on channel eligibility.
Troubleshooting live ads and sponsorship disclosures
- Monetization controls are unavailable: Check YouTube Studio > Earn for your channel’s eligibility and accepted modules. Confirm that the channel has accepted the Watch Page Monetization Module.
- The stream is live but no mid-roll appears: An ad opportunity does not guarantee an ad for every viewer. If you chose manual mode, confirm that you inserted a break in the Live Control Room; no manual breaks means no manual mid-rolls.
- An automatic break interrupts a key moment: Delay automatic breaks for 10 minutes during the moment. The countdown shows when they resume. Remember that manual breaks remain active during the delay.
- Viewers on an external embed report no ads: YouTube says ads are turned off for embedded streams when autoplay is enabled on the external site.
- Late-arriving viewers miss the sponsor disclosure: Repeat the spoken disclosure periodically during the stream; do not rely solely on its description or the platform label.
- A sponsor disclosure is hidden by an ad: A disclosure obscured by an ad is not clear and conspicuous under the FTC’s U.S. guidance. Consider keeping a clear disclosure visible throughout the stream.
