Alan Wake 2: The Lake House draws on two films for different kinds of unease: Annihilation informed the developers’ thinking about color and an uncanny landscape, while Alien was a reference for confined spaces and the feeling that the people inside the facility are simply doing a job. Remedy’s developers described these as creative influences, not as stories the expansion directly adapts.
How Annihilation shaped the look of the horror
Game director Kyle Rowley said the team looked to Annihilation as it considered how to make the expansion’s horror feel different and use color more interestingly. In a Digital Trends interview published October 22, 2024, Rowley put it simply: “We were looking at, for example, Annihilation,” (Digital Trends interview).

The reference points to visual unease rather than a matching plot: a landscape and palette that can feel strange and threatening without relying only on darkness. In the same interview, the preview’s reporter described brutalist architecture, views of the Pacific Northwest, research footage, and colorful slime. Those are the reporter’s observations of the game, not details Rowley presented as a direct recreation of the film.
How Alien informed the facility’s atmosphere
Lead writer Clay Murphy named Alien as a reference for the Lake House’s claustrophobic spaces and the sense that its occupants are at work. “The reference for me for this one was actually Alien,” he told Digital Trends (interview, October 22, 2024).

That workplace framing gives the setting a different kind of tension from the visual influence Rowley described: people carry out their duties inside a restrictive research facility while something has gone badly wrong. The available comments establish an atmospheric reference, not a scene-by-scene model or an adaptation of Alien.
Where the film references meet the game’s story
The Lake House is a survival-horror expansion for Alan Wake 2, set in a Federal Bureau of Control research facility beside Cauldron Lake. Experiments there have caused reality to collide with the Dark Place. Players take the role of FBC agent Kiran Estevez, portrayed by Janina Gavankar; her story runs parallel to the main game’s events. Remedy describes the expansion as adding a multi-level location and a new survival-horror focus (Remedy’s launch announcement; Remedy’s FAQ).

The two references therefore serve distinct purposes in the developers’ reported framing: Annihilation for color and an uncanny environment, Alien for confinement and workplace routine. The expansion also adds the Painted enemy and the Black Rock Launcher, grounding those influences in the FBC’s own world rather than turning the game into either film.

The expansion launched on October 22, 2024 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. It requires Alan Wake 2 and the Expansion Pass, which is included with the Deluxe Edition or can be acquired by upgrading. Remedy’s physical Deluxe Edition is listed for PS5 and Xbox Series X and includes the base game, Deluxe digital items, and the Expansion Pass with Night Springs and The Lake House. The expansion requires an additional download; it is not playable directly from the physical disc (Remedy FAQ; launch announcement).

Remedy also frames the expansion as part of the Remedy Connected Universe and a treat for Control fans, making Control a natural next game for players who want more of that shared setting (Remedy release announcement).
