Mel Brooks praised Josh Gad’s grasp of contemporary Star Wars material when Gad pitched the Spaceballs sequel, Gad recalled. Brooks told him, “it really sounds like you’ve got your finger on the pulse,” and Gad said Brooks trusted what he had to say. The remark is Gad’s recollection, reported by Variety on January 5, 2025—not a separate public statement from Brooks.
What did Mel Brooks say about Josh Gad writing Spaceballs 2?
In a pitch meeting for the sequel, Gad said Brooks asked for details because he was not familiar with much of the newer Star Wars material. Gad walked him through the story beats and explained how the comedy connected to particular moments in the franchise. Brooks then said, “it really sounds like you’ve got your finger on the pulse,” according to Gad’s account on the Let’s Talk Off Camera podcast, reported by Variety.
Gad described the praise as “the greatest compliment I could have ever gotten.” He also said Brooks “really just trusted everything I had to say.” The anecdote is specifically about Brooks’s response to Gad explaining the pitch’s contemporary Star Wars references.
What is the sequel called now?
The film’s official title is Spaceballs: The New One. The Associated Press reported the title announcement at CinemaCon on April 16, 2026; Brooks joked, “It’s just like the old one, but it’s newer.” The title and joke are covered in the AP’s CinemaCon report.
