The wording alludes to Ryan’s nudity in the film and the attention her casting drew. The Indiependent’s retrospective says Ryan was strongly associated with romantic comedies and argues that she was treated harshly for taking a role involving nudity. How has the film been interpreted?
In the same retrospective, Steph Green describes In the Cut as an unusual, female-directed erotic thriller and argues that it was misunderstood. Green reads Frannie as repressed and searching for structure. These are critical interpretations of the film, not settled facts about how all viewers received it.
