Kristen Wiig’s best Saturday Night Live characters turn a sharply recognizable behavior into a comic engine: a cashier who treats every customer like an old friend, a schoolgirl who keeps causing trouble, or a conversational rival who cannot let anyone else have the best story. This guide weighs the characters by how quickly their premise lands, what Wiig’s voice and physical performance add, how much the setup can vary, and how well each represents her range—not by an impossible-to-prove universal ranking.
How these Kristen Wiig SNL characters stand out
Wiig’s recurring creations work in different ways. Some are built around a social habit that escalates; others depend on an instantly legible voice, gesture, or visual surprise. A memorable character does not need the most elaborate backstory: the premise must be clear, and Wiig’s performance has to make it feel specific enough to sustain a sketch.
The picks below cover the most distinctive recurring characters supported by the available retrospectives and official SNL compilations. They are ordered by the kind of comedy they showcase, not as a definitive audience ranking.
Target Lady: the cashier who treats you like a close friend
Target Lady is a high-energy retail cashier whose friendliness tips into overfamiliarity. The basic social observation is easy to recognize; Wiig makes it strange through an exuberant voice and physical presence. The character’s appeal is the friction between a routine checkout and the intensity of someone who behaves as though every customer is part of her personal life.

TheWrap’s 2019 retrospective reports that Wiig developed Target Lady during her Groundlings work and included the character in her SNL audition tape. Wiig also discussed how earlier jobs exposed her to a variety of people, a useful context for the observational quality of characters like Target Lady, in a 2008 Vanity Fair interview. Peacock’s official 2020 “SNL | Best of Kristen Wiig” compilation names Target Lady among its iconic characters.
Gilly: a simple refrain with room for mischief
Gilly is a mischievous schoolgirl whose troublemaking and familiar refrain give the character a blunt, instantly repeatable comic pattern. That clarity is the point: viewers understand the setup quickly, and the fun comes from seeing the disruptive behavior recur within a sketch. The premise is broad and deliberately repetitive, so it is less about social observation than about a recognizable character rhythm.

Peacock’s official 2020 “SNL | Best of Kristen Wiig” compilation identifies Gilly alongside Target Lady. That places her among the characters the show itself has chosen to revisit, without implying that every viewer ranks her the same way.
Penelope: the one-upper who cannot let a story stand
Penelope is a nervous, compulsive one-upper. When someone shares an anecdote, she counters with a claim that grows more implausible, turning ordinary conversation into an escalating contest. The premise doubles as the sketch structure: each new boast gives the scene somewhere to go, and the audience can anticipate the next escalation without knowing exactly what it will be.

In her 2008 Vanity Fair interview, Wiig said she enjoyed playing Penelope. The role shows how a small social flaw can generate variation across a sketch: the subject of the competing story changes, while Penelope’s need to outdo everyone remains constant.
Dooneese: the unexpected Maharelle sister
Dooneese appears in the Lawrence Welk Show musical sketches as the unexpected Maharelle sister. The character’s deliberately unusual visual and physical presentation creates an immediate contrast with the polished musical setting. But the larger comic idea is the mismatch between the group’s smooth performance and the disruption Dooneese brings to it; reducing the character to appearance alone misses that contrast.

Peacock’s official channel published “Every Kristen Wiig Dooneese Sketch Ever” in 2024. Wiig brought Dooneese back for the Maharelle Sisters sketch during the SNL 50th anniversary celebration in 2025, according to the Associated Press. The return is a reminder of how strongly the character’s physical comedy depends on setting and ensemble contrast.

Sue
Sue is associated with uncontrollable excitement around surprises, a premise that puts anticipation and reaction at the center of the performance. The character’s comic promise lies in how Wiig’s energy can overwhelm a moment that is meant to be ordinary. TheWrap’s retrospective includes Sue among Wiig’s notable characters.

Aunt Linda, Mindy Grayson, and Kat from The Californians
TheWrap also names Aunt Linda, Mindy Grayson, and Kat from The Californians in its retrospective of Wiig’s characters. They help show the breadth of her SNL work beyond the best-known standalone recurring figures, though the available source material does not establish a basis for ranking each one against the four main picks above.
Where to look for the sketches
Peacock’s official SNL channel has published both the 2020 “SNL | Best of Kristen Wiig” compilation and the 2024 “Every Kristen Wiig Dooneese Sketch Ever.” They are useful places to check for a selection of the characters discussed here, but publication of a compilation does not guarantee that it remains available in Peacock’s current catalog. Peacock’s channel description says the service is available within the United States; availability elsewhere may differ.
