Kerry Kennedy said that nearly all members of her family showed signs of post-traumatic stress for years after her father, Robert F. Kennedy, was assassinated. Her words describe her recollection of the family’s distress; the report does not establish that each person received a clinical PTSD diagnosis.
What Kerry Kennedy said
At the December 11, 2024 Ripple of Hope Award Gala, which honored her mother, Ethel Kennedy, Kerry Kennedy spoke about the family’s life after Robert F. Kennedy’s assassination. PEOPLE reported her remarks the following day in an article syndicated by Yahoo News.
“All of us were traumatized, and she was traumatized,” Kennedy explained. “And nearly all [of] us were showing signs of post traumatic stress disorder for years and years.” PEOPLE’s report syndicated by Yahoo News identifies Kennedy as a lawyer and human rights activist. The wording “showing signs of” is important: Kennedy was describing what she remembered observing, not announcing documented diagnoses for every relative.
What the report does—and does not—establish
The available account attributes the statement to Kennedy at the gala, but does not provide a complete primary recording or transcript of her speech. It also does not document individual clinical evaluations or establish that each family member was formally diagnosed with PTSD.

PTSD is a clinical condition assessed by qualified professionals; a person’s account of trauma or signs that resemble the condition are not, by themselves, confirmation of a diagnosis. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ National Center for PTSD overview provides general information about the condition and its assessment. It says nothing about the Kennedy family’s individual health.
Other accounts of the family’s aftermath
In a separate CBS account about the siblings discussing their father’s murder, Christopher Kennedy described the family’s efforts to recover: “We’ve all been through thousands of hours of therapy, 28-day programs, all sorts of things to, well, recover from the damage and the crime.” That is an attributed account of family treatment and recovery, not evidence of a diagnosis for each sibling. CBS News’ press release provides the quotation.

PBS FRONTLINE’s 2025 documentary transcript, “The Rise of RFK Jr.”, also includes retrospective accounts of trauma and psychological scars after the assassination. Those interviewees’ comments are personal recollections, not clinical findings about the family.

The National Archives’ Robert F. Kennedy assassination records page describes records released in 2025 and says additions are being made on a rolling basis. It is a resource for historical documentation of the assassination, not for verifying the Kennedy family’s medical history.
