Paramount is the broader entertainment company and brand family—often also shorthand for Paramount Pictures, the film studio. Paramount+ is a separate paid streaming service operated within that wider portfolio.
In other words, seeing the Paramount mountain logo, watching a Paramount-produced film, or subscribing to a Paramount-branded television channel does not automatically give you a Paramount+ subscription. Paramount+ has its own plans, account, billing arrangements, devices, and content restrictions.
What does “Paramount” mean?
“Paramount” is not one single consumer app or subscription. Depending on the context, it can refer to several related things:

- The broader Paramount corporate group: an entertainment portfolio spanning film, television, streaming, news, sports, licensing, advertising, and other media businesses.
- Paramount Pictures: the film studio and global distributor associated with theatrical releases, home entertainment, film libraries, and franchises such as Mission: Impossible and Transformers. Paramount describes its studio and content businesses on its official content-licensing page.
- Other Paramount media brands: the name may be used informally when someone means a television network, production label, website, or another business in the Paramount portfolio.
- Paramount+: the specific subscription streaming service, which should be treated separately from the general Paramount name.
Paramount’s portfolio includes brands and services such as CBS, Nickelodeon, MTV, Comedy Central, Pluto TV, Paramount Pictures, and Paramount+. The exact corporate structure and branding can change, but the practical distinction remains: the company or studio is not the same thing as its streaming subscription.

What is Paramount+?
Paramount+ is Paramount’s direct-to-consumer subscription video-on-demand and live-streaming service. It combines an on-demand library with selected live programming rather than functioning as a complete online version of every Paramount business.
Depending on the country, plan, and current rights arrangements, Paramount+ can include:
- Movies and television series available on demand
- Paramount+ original programming
- Programming associated with CBS, BET, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, Paramount Pictures, and the Smithsonian Channel
- Live sports and news
- CBS News Network and CBS Sports HQ, which Paramount says are available to all Paramount+ subscribers
- SHOWTIME programming on the applicable premium offering
- Eligible local live CBS programming, including certain sports and other events, on the applicable U.S. premium plan
That makes Paramount+ broader than a service containing only Paramount Pictures movies. It brings together programming from multiple brands owned, operated, or licensed within the wider Paramount portfolio.

Paramount vs. Paramount+: the key differences

Is Paramount+ included with Paramount?
Normally, no. Paramount is not a membership that automatically unlocks Paramount+. Paramount+ must generally be obtained through a direct subscription, an app store, a third-party platform, a bundle, or a promotional entitlement.
A Paramount-branded film may be available to rent or buy without Paramount+, and a cable package may carry a Paramount-branded channel without creating a Paramount+ account. Conversely, a partner bundle may provide Paramount+ access even though the subscription is billed somewhere other than Paramount.
Where you subscribed matters. Direct subscribers generally manage the service through their Paramount+ account. If the subscription was purchased through Apple, Google, Amazon, Roku, a cable company, or another partner, cancellation and plan changes generally must be handled through that provider. Paramount’s U.S. Paramount+ terms also state that subscriptions can auto-renew, prices may change, and access generally continues until the end of the current billing period after cancellation.

Does Paramount+ have every Paramount movie and show?
No. A title being produced, owned, or distributed by Paramount does not prove that it is currently available on Paramount+.

- Owned or controlled by a Paramount-related company: A Paramount business has rights or an interest in the title.
- Distributed by Paramount: Paramount handled distribution in a particular market or format.
- Available on Paramount+: The title is currently included in the service’s catalog under the reader’s location and plan.
Streaming catalogs rotate. Availability can differ by country, platform, plan, licensing agreement, and date. Paramount’s terms explain that content may be added or removed and that territory and rights restrictions apply.

- It has left the Paramount+ catalog.
- It is licensed to another streaming service.
- It is unavailable in your country.
- It requires a different plan.
- It is available only as a digital rental or purchase.
- You searched for a different version, title, or spelling.
For one specific movie or series, search the title first, check its availability in your country, and compare a subscription with a one-time rental or purchase. Paramount+ is not automatically the cheapest or quickest option for every Paramount title.
Paramount+, Paramount Pictures, and Paramount Network
These names are easy to confuse:
- Paramount: the broad company or brand family, or an informal reference to one of its businesses.
- Paramount Pictures: the film studio and distributor.
- Paramount+: the paid subscription streaming service.
- Paramount Network: a television-network brand.
A cable or live-TV package that includes Paramount Network should not automatically be assumed to include Paramount+. Likewise, a Paramount+ subscription should not be assumed to include every linear television channel in the Paramount portfolio.

Which service or access method do you need?
- You want one particular movie: Search for that title and compare Paramount+, other legal streaming services, digital rental or purchase stores, and physical media.
- You want a subscription library: Paramount+ is the relevant product, subject to its current catalog, plan, and country restrictions.
- You want free Paramount-affiliated streaming: Consider Pluto TV. Paramount describes Pluto TV as a free streaming service with live linear channels and on-demand programming. It is not a free version of the full Paramount+ catalog.
- You want a traditional television channel: Check a cable, satellite, or live-TV provider for the specific channel.
- You want SHOWTIME: Verify that the selected Paramount+ plan includes it; Paramount associates SHOWTIME access with its applicable premium offering.
- You want local CBS or live sports: Confirm the plan, local market, event rights, and blackout rules before subscribing.
What to check before subscribing to Paramount+
- Current price: Check the official checkout page for your country and signup route rather than relying on an old price.
- Plan name and contents: Confirm advertising rules, SHOWTIME access, downloads, and other features shown at checkout.
- Local CBS availability: In the U.S., verify whether your market and selected plan qualify for local live CBS programming.
- Sports rights: Confirm that the specific event is included. Live programming may be subject to blackouts, territory limits, and device restrictions.
- Device compatibility: Check that your television, phone, tablet, browser, or streaming device supports the service.
- Billing provider: Note whether Paramount, an app store, a streaming platform, or another partner will bill you.
- Renewal and cancellation: Check the renewal date and cancellation instructions. Canceling through the wrong provider may not stop billing.
Common Paramount and Paramount+ mix-ups
“I subscribed to Paramount through my cable company.”
That could mean a Paramount-branded television channel, a Paramount+ bundle, a third-party streaming package, or a promotion. Check the provider’s account page and billing description to identify what you actually purchased. Access to a linear channel does not by itself confirm a Paramount+ subscription.

- Getting set up is easy – Plug in and connect to Wi-Fi for smooth streaming.
“I bought a Paramount movie.”
A digital rental or purchase normally gives you access to that title under the store’s terms. It is not the same as subscribing to Paramount+ and does not unlock the wider streaming catalog.
“I canceled Paramount+, but I can still watch.”
That can be normal. Cancellation generally stops the next renewal while leaving access active until the end of the current billing period, subject to the applicable terms.
“Paramount+ says the live event is unavailable.”
Check your location, local CBS eligibility, plan level, blackout rules, device compatibility, internet connection, and whether your partner-billed subscription carries the expected entitlement. Live rights can differ even when an event is promoted by a Paramount-related brand.

The bottom line
Paramount is the broader entertainment company and brand family; Paramount+ is a separate subscription streaming service within that portfolio. Paramount+ offers a changing selection of movies, series, originals, sports, news, and other programming, but the Paramount name alone does not provide streaming access, and Paramount+ does not contain every Paramount title in every country or plan.
