RedNote is the international-facing name for Xiaohongshu (小红书), a Shanghai-based lifestyle and social-commerce network. It combines photo-and-text posts, short videos, searchable recommendations, creator communities and shopping features. It resembles Instagram, Pinterest and TikTok in different ways, but it is not simply TikTok with a new name.
The app became widely known in the United States during the January 2025 wave of TikTok users looking for an alternative. Its longer-term value is more specific: RedNote is strongest for lifestyle discovery, product research, travel, beauty, fashion, food and cross-cultural conversation.
RedNote in one minute

The company has also been developing a more distinct international presence. Wired reported in April 2026 that Rednote.com had launched for international business, although users may still encounter Xiaohongshu branding, Chinese-language pages or Chinese-language content depending on location and app version. Why did TikTok users move to RedNote?
RedNote surged in the United States in January 2025 as users faced uncertainty about TikTok’s future availability. Some joined because they wanted a practical substitute; others joined as a symbolic protest against U.S. restrictions aimed at TikTok. News coverage called these newcomers “TikTok refugees.” Associated Press NPR
That highly visible migration explains why many Americans heard of RedNote, but it does not prove that a permanent U.S. TikTok-sized audience formed. RedNote’s core community remains overwhelmingly Chinese-speaking.
How RedNote works
Notes, photos and short videos
Users publish “notes” containing text, one or more images, short videos, captions, hashtags, recommendations and location or product references. Comments, replies, likes, saves, follows and direct messages support the social layer. Live, shopping and creator functions vary by country, account status and app version.
Discovery is more than a video feed
Content appears through recommended feeds, search, hashtags, topics, profiles, similar-post suggestions and engagement signals such as viewing, saving, commenting and following. This makes RedNote useful as a visual search and review community: someone may search for a hotel, restaurant, skincare product, neighborhood or outfit rather than simply wait for an entertaining clip.
Shopping and recommendations
RedNote includes product-discovery and shopping functions. Australia’s eSafety Commissioner describes an in-app experience in which users can browse and buy products. eSafety Commissioner A product may be mentioned in a creator’s post, attached to a commerce listing, sold by a third party or available for in-app purchase. Availability, shipping, returns and seller eligibility are not uniform for U.S. users.

TechCrunch characterized RedNote as having a Pinterest-like layout, Instagram-like social use and social-shopping functions. The most accurate shorthand is therefore Instagram plus Pinterest plus TikTok-style video and shopping. TechCrunch
Who uses RedNote?
AP reported roughly 300 million monthly active users, but that figure is widely reported rather than consistently independently verified by the company. RedNote has not published a dependable U.S.-user total. AP
Users may encounter people in mainland China, Chinese diaspora communities and other international markets. English-language posts exist, but English is not necessarily the dominant experience. Is RedNote available in English and in the United States?
The U.S. App Store listing includes English, French, Japanese, Korean, Russian, simplified Chinese, Spanish and traditional Chinese. That describes supported interface languages, not the language of posts, search results, support or product listings. Apple App Store
The U.S. iOS and Android listings were available when checked in August 2026. Store availability, features, verification rules and policies can change by country, age, account and app version.

How to sign up
- Download the official rednote app from the Apple App Store or Google Play.
- Check that the developer is Xingin or Xingyin Information Technology (Shanghai) Co., Ltd.
- Register with the phone number, email or other sign-in method offered in your version of the app.
- Complete any SMS, age, identity or security verification requested.
- Select interests and follow accounts to shape recommendations.
- Review contact-sync, location, notification and other permissions before accepting them.
- Use in-app or device translation when reading Chinese-language posts.
Requirements are not universal. Some international users have reported SMS, login and account-lock problems, but those reports are anecdotal rather than proof that every user faces them. If registration fails, verify the country code, avoid repeated rapid attempts, use only the official app and contact in-app support. Never send identity documents to a person claiming to be support in a direct message.

Is RedNote free?
Basic browsing and posting do not appear to require a subscription. The stores identify advertising and in-app purchases. The U.S. iOS listing showed virtual-currency purchases from $0.99 to $219.00 when accessed in August 2026; prices can vary by region, tax, currency and date. Apple App Store
Those purchases are not evidence of a paid membership or a creator-revenue guarantee. Check the current store listing before spending money.
Can creators and brands make money?
RedNote can help creators and brands reach audiences interested in beauty, fashion, food, travel, home and product recommendations. Possible income routes include:
- Brand sponsorships and paid collaborations.
- Affiliate or commerce partnerships.
- Product sales and traffic to an external store.
- Services, bookings or consulting promoted through an account.
These are indirect or commercial routes. Do not assume RedNote offers every creator a TikTok-style fund, automatic advertising revenue or a standardized U.S. payout program. Platform-native monetization requires official documentation for the relevant market.

Is RedNote safe?
Safety depends on what risk you mean. Account scams, privacy, technical security, moderation and data location are separate questions.
Scams and account security
- Watch for impersonation accounts, fake giveaways and malicious links.
- Do not move financial transactions to unknown users or unverified sellers.
- Be cautious of counterfeit goods and requests for passports or identity documents.
- Use a unique password and never reuse banking, email or work credentials.
Privacy and data collection
Apple’s developer disclosure says the app may use identifiers to track users across other companies’ apps and websites and may collect or link location, contact information, contacts, user content, search history, identifiers, purchases, usage data and diagnostics. Google Play says the app may collect location, personal information and other data, encrypts data in transit and provides a deletion request. Practical privacy settings
- Do not sync contacts unless you need the feature.
- Deny precise location unless a feature genuinely requires it.
- Avoid uploading private images, confidential work or identity documents.
- Review permissions after major updates.
- Remember that “no data shared” does not mean “no data collected.”
What about censorship and moderation?
RedNote operates within China’s regulatory environment, so its content rules and enforcement may not resemble those of U.S. platforms. Posts can be removed and accounts restricted; political sensitivity, language and translation can affect how rules are applied.
NPR reported that American newcomers raised privacy and censorship questions and discussed older leaked moderation materials concerning sensitive political subjects. Language, shopping and account problems
Language barrier
- Search with English and Chinese keywords together.
- Follow bilingual creators and use translation tools.
- Try both Chinese and English spellings for products and places.
- Expect some support and commerce material to remain Chinese-language.
Registration or restriction problems
SMS failures, automated fraud checks, suspicious VPN or device activity, mass following, repetitive comments and policy violations can all contribute to account trouble. User reports of a “shadow ban” are anecdotal; no universal cause or guaranteed reversal should be assumed.

Check seller identity, shipping restrictions, customs, currency conversion, return terms and whether a recommendation is sponsored. A product visible in a post may not be purchasable in the United States.
Who should try RedNote?
It may suit you if you want
- Searchable lifestyle and product recommendations.
- Beauty, fashion, food, travel or home inspiration.
- Photo-and-text storytelling as well as short video.
- Cross-cultural conversation and Chinese-speaking communities.
- A discovery experience broader than a pure entertainment feed.
Consider another platform if you need
- An almost entirely English-language feed and support system.
- Transparent U.S.-focused data governance.
- Mature, clearly documented creator payouts.
- Familiar U.S. moderation norms.
- Seamless identity verification and account recovery.
- A pure rapid-entertainment short-video experience.
Verdict: is RedNote a TikTok replacement?
RedNote is worth trying for lifestyle discovery, product research and cross-cultural communities. It is not a guaranteed one-for-one TikTok replacement: the audience is more Chinese-speaking, photo-and-text notes matter more, translation can be incomplete, commerce varies by region, and U.S. creator monetization is less clearly established. Treat it as a complementary platform, and limit permissions and personal information according to your privacy needs.
