In a typical adaptive-bitrate workflow, the system encodes several renditions, packages them into segments and a playlist or manifest, and delivers them through a content delivery network (CDN). The viewer’s player selects among the available renditions as conditions change.
How live video transcoding works
A live streaming pipeline moves media through several related but distinct stages. One useful AWS reference architecture uses MediaLive for ingest and transcoding, MediaPackage for packaging, and CloudFront for delivery. Those are AWS-specific examples, not required components or the only way to build a streaming system.
- Ingest the live feed. A camera, production system, or other live source sends its feed to an encoder or live-processing service. Systems may use parallel inputs for resilience; AWS’s reference design ingests two feeds for MediaLive redundancy.
- Encode or transcode. The service compresses video into output suitable for playback. For adaptive-bitrate streaming, it commonly produces multiple renditions at different resolutions and bitrates, giving a player options suited to available bandwidth and device capability.
- Package the media. The encoded output is organized into segments and described by manifests or playlists. Packaging makes media available through delivery formats such as HLS or DASH; it is not the same task as transcoding.
- Deliver the packaged stream. A CDN distributes segments and manifests to viewers. In the AWS example, CloudFront delivers media packaged by MediaPackage.
- Select and play a rendition. The viewer’s player downloads the media and chooses among available versions, adjusting as network throughput or playback capabilities change.
In Apple’s description, HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) sends audio and video over HTTP for playback on supported Apple devices and desktop computers. HLS is a delivery format in this workflow, not another name for transcoding.
Encoding, transcoding, packaging, and delivery are different jobs
- Encoding compresses source video into a format suitable for storage or playback.
- Transcoding commonly means converting an already encoded live feed into new output encodings or renditions. Implementations vary: not every workflow must decode and re-encode every stream.
- Packaging arranges encoded media into segments and provides manifests or playlists that describe how a player can request it.
- CDN delivery distributes the packaged media to viewers; using a CDN does not itself mean the video has been transcoded.
HLS and DASH are streaming delivery protocols or formats in this context. CMAF is a segmented-media format that Apple says can support adaptive presentations delivered through HLS and MPEG-DASH.

What adaptive-bitrate streaming means
Adaptive-bitrate (ABR) streaming gives the player a set of prepared renditions rather than a single fixed-quality version. The player can choose a lower-bitrate option when conditions will not sustain a higher one, then move up when bandwidth and playback conditions permit.
The IETF’s RFC 9317 describes this as a client-side response to observed application-layer download speed and changing playback capabilities, such as memory, CPU, or display size. ABR can help a stream adapt to varied connections and devices, but it cannot improve a poor source feed or guarantee uninterrupted playback.

What affects a transcoding setup
Quality, bitrate, and bandwidth
Higher-quality renditions generally need more bitrate and delivery capacity. Apple describes its published encoding bitrates as initial targets for typical content and advises evaluating them against the actual content and workflow. There is no universally optimal rendition ladder: fast motion, fine detail, screen content, and other characteristics can affect the result.
Codec and device compatibility
A device and player must support the codec, profile, and container used by an output to decode it. Apple’s HLS authoring specification documents requirements for Apple-targeted playback; other target platforms may have different compatibility guidance. Check the current requirements for the devices and players your audience uses before choosing outputs.

Latency
End-to-end latency depends on the full system, including encoding and decoding, segment and playlist behavior, network conditions, and player buffering. AWS’s HLS guidance cautions that shortening segments can affect quality and increase buffering in some workflows. Low latency is a system-level tradeoff, not simply a transcoder setting.
Resilience
Redundant inputs or parallel processing can reduce reliance on a single feed or processing path. AWS’s two-feed MediaLive design illustrates one approach; it does not guarantee resilience for other deployments. The overall design must account for the failure points in the chosen ingest, processing, packaging, and delivery services.

Cloud processing or hardware
A live event requires an encoder, which may be off-the-shelf hardware, but a physical encoder is not mandatory: cloud services can also process live video. Cloud processing avoids operating an encoding appliance but brings service and delivery costs; hardware has equipment and operational requirements. Actual costs depend on the workload and provider, so use provider pricing calculators or request a quote for a specific design rather than assuming one approach is always cheaper.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When a live-transcoding workflow is useful
Transcoding is useful when a live feed needs to be delivered in multiple renditions, converted into outputs supported by target players, or prepared for an adaptive-bitrate workflow. It is not automatically necessary in every streaming setup: the right processing depends on the source, playback requirements, and delivery format. A hardware encoder is one possible implementation; cloud services are another.
