Frame rate, measured in frames per second (FPS), is how many successive video frames your stream captures, encodes, or delivers each second. For many interviews, lectures, and documentary discussions, 30 fps is a sensible starting point. Choose 60 fps when fast movement needs to look smoother—and only if your camera or capture source, encoder, upload connection, and streaming platform can sustain it.
What does FPS mean in streaming?
FPS stands for frames per second. A 30 fps stream sends up to 30 successive frames each second; a 60 fps stream sends up to 60. More frames can make motion look smoother, especially when subjects or cameras move quickly. FPS alone does not determine picture quality: resolution, bitrate, compression, source quality, and delivery conditions matter too. Amazon IVS describes the relationship plainly: “Bitrate, FPS, and resolution are interrelated.”
For a mostly static scene—such as a presenter speaking, an interview, or slides—30 fps is often adequate. Sports, fast gameplay, and other scenes with rapid movement are stronger candidates for 60 fps, provided the rest of the streaming setup can handle it.
Should you stream at 30 or 60 FPS?
| Consideration | 30 fps | 60 fps |
|---|---|---|
| Motion | Often sufficient for talking heads, interviews, and slides. | Can represent fast movement more smoothly. |
| Bandwidth and bitrate | May require less capacity, depending on resolution, codec, content, and platform. | Generally places greater demands on the stream, though it does not automatically require twice the bitrate. |
| Encoding workload | Typically less demanding than producing the same stream at 60 fps. | Requires the encoder and computer to process more frames; hardware and resource limits can cause instability or dropped frames. |
| Compatibility | Check that the source, encoder, and destination platform support your chosen resolution and rate. | Check the same pipeline end to end. YouTube and Amazon IVS support up to 60 fps in the cited guidance. |
There is no universally best rate. Amazon IVS says the optimum depends on circumstances and available bandwidth. Google Cloud notes that adding 60 fps steps to an encoding ladder requires more computing power. Choose the rate that suits the motion and that your actual equipment and connection can sustain.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Does 60 FPS use more bitrate?
Often, a higher frame rate raises the stream’s bitrate needs, especially when the picture contains substantial movement. But there is no fixed multiplier: the appropriate bitrate depends on resolution, codec, platform, and content. Cloudflare’s guidance distinguishes high-motion, high-frame-rate video from low-motion material such as slides, which can use less bitrate.

The figures differ because providers describe their own services and encoding contexts. Use the destination platform’s current guidance for your stream rather than treating one provider’s table as a setting for another.
What FPS should you use for streaming?
- Match the rate to the content. For interviews, documentary commentary, and slides, begin at 30 fps. Consider 60 fps for fast gameplay or sports where smoother motion matters.
- Check the whole pipeline. Confirm that the camera or capture device can provide the selected resolution and frame rate, the encoder software supports it, the computer can encode it, and the destination platform accepts it. A camera’s advertised capability alone does not guarantee a stable stream.
- Choose a platform-appropriate bitrate. Consult the destination’s current settings for your resolution, frame rate, and codec. Make sure your sustained upload capacity can carry the stream; a brief peak speed is not enough evidence of a reliable connection.
- Rehearse with representative motion and audio. Google/YouTube Help recommends running a speed test to check upload bitrate and testing before going live. Recreate the movement expected during the event, then inspect stream health.
- Adjust if the stream struggles. If you see instability or dropped frames, reduce FPS, resolution, or bitrate as appropriate, then test again. Change one setting at a time so you can identify which adjustment helps.
What can make a 60 FPS stream unstable?
A chosen FPS is an output target, not a guarantee that every part of the setup can meet it. Amazon IVS multitrack guidance identifies older GPUs, first-mile network quality, resource contention, user settings, and codec support as possible constraints. High-motion scenes can also need more bitrate than static ones.
