FLAC stands for Free Lossless Audio Codec. It compresses digital audio without losing the encoded PCM samples, so decoding can recover those samples exactly. FLAC is an audio format—not a streaming service, a playback device, or a guarantee that you will hear better sound.
What FLAC means—and what “lossless” means
FLAC is a codec, short for compressor-decompressor, and a file and stream format for PCM audio. It reduces the storage space needed for digital audio while preserving the information in the encoded samples. In December 2024, the IETF published the format specification as RFC 9639, which describes FLAC as reducing storage “without losing information.”
Lossless describes whether the encoded data can be recovered: a FLAC decoder reconstructs the original encoded PCM samples. It does not establish that a listener will hear a difference between FLAC and another source, nor does it say that the original recording itself is high quality.
How FLAC works
Audio samples tend to resemble nearby samples over short periods. FLAC uses that correlation to encode the signal more compactly, without discarding audio information as a lossy codec does. It is designed for PCM audio, not arbitrary non-PCM signals.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A FLAC file or stream starts with the fLaC marker and a required STREAMINFO metadata block, followed by optional metadata and audio frames. STREAMINFO includes details such as sample rate and channel count, and an MD5 signature of the unencoded samples that can help check transmission integrity. The format also defines metadata for comments, seeking, cuesheets, and pictures.
Format limits are not player guarantees
The specification allows 1–8 channels, sample rates from 1 to 1,048,575 Hz, and sample depths from 4 to 32 bits. Those are capabilities of the format, not a promise that a given player supports every combination. The RFC notes that most FLAC tools have been optimized for CD audio: stereo, 44.1 kHz, 16-bit PCM.

Can you stream FLAC?
Yes. FLAC is not limited to downloaded files. RFC 9639 defines a streamable subset, with constraints that let a decoder without seeking join in midstream and keep decoder resource requirements more predictable. Whether a particular streaming service delivers FLAC depends on that service’s implementation.
Examples of documented FLAC delivery
- Amazon Music: its developer documentation describes MPEG-DASH delivery in ISO BMFF/MP4 and lists FLAC for HD and UHD audio. In that documented integration, HD is 16-bit and UHD is 24-bit, with different sampling-rate options. These details describe Amazon’s implementation; they should not be assumed for every service or catalog item. See Amazon Music’s audio-format documentation.
- Apple HLS: Apple’s authoring specification lists FLAC among supported stereo and multichannel codecs and requires fMP4 as the container for FLAC audio in that delivery system. This is support in the HLS specification, not confirmation that every Apple device or consumer service accepts every FLAC file. See Apple’s HLS authoring specification.
FLAC versus MP3: different trade-offs
FLAC preserves the encoded PCM samples; MP3 is a lossy format, which reduces file size by discarding audio information. That technical distinction does not prove that FLAC will sound better to every listener. The audible result also depends on the recording, playback chain, listening conditions, and whether the sources being compared are actually the same master.

For choosing a format, consider storage or bandwidth, support in the apps and devices you use, and the source recording. A high-resolution label or a higher sample-rate number alone does not establish an audible improvement.
How to check FLAC compatibility
- For a local file: check the playback app’s supported-format list or the device manual for explicit FLAC support. Try a file in the software you already use before buying additional hardware.
- For streamed music: check the service’s current documentation, the quality setting and subscription tier, and whether both the app and playback device support the delivered format.
- Check the whole output chain: a service’s use of FLAC does not by itself guarantee that every app, connection, or output stage preserves that stream format.
- Consider optional hardware only for a concrete need: a portable digital audio player with FLAC support can be useful for carrying a local library offline. Compare supported formats and sample rates, storage expansion, battery life, interface, and output connections. A dedicated player or new DAC is not automatically required to listen to FLAC.
Xiph describes FLAC as supported by many programs, and the standard describes low decoding complexity. Still, check your own software or device rather than assuming universal support. See Xiph’s FLAC overview.

FLAC for documentary and video streamers
FLAC describes audio encoding; it does not mean that a video platform, livestreaming tool, or every playback device accepts FLAC. If you are preparing documentary audio or a soundtrack for a platform, check that platform’s current upload or delivery requirements and verify the playback chain. The existence of a FLAC streaming specification is not a platform-compatibility guarantee.
Keep a YouTube video stream running from the cloud
FLAC itself does not keep a YouTube channel live. For a continuous YouTube stream made from uploaded video, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service: upload a recording or create a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded video in the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to remain on.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a DAC to listen to FLAC?
Not necessarily. The cited format specification does not establish that a new DAC is required. First check whether your existing device decodes FLAC and how it outputs audio.
Does FLAC always sound better?
No such universal conclusion follows from lossless encoding. FLAC preserves the encoded PCM samples, but that technical property alone does not show that every listener will hear a difference.
