Choose MP4 for a video meant for broad device or browser playback, or when a delivery workflow specifically asks for it—but check the codecs and settings inside the file. Choose MKV when you need a flexible single-file container for selectable audio and subtitle tracks, chapters, and metadata, and your player supports the file’s streams. Neither extension guarantees compatibility or determines picture quality.
MKV and MP4 are containers, not codecs
A container packages encoded video and audio tracks, and may also hold subtitles and other information. A codec encodes or decodes a media track. The file extension tells you the container, not whether a particular device can decode the video and audio inside it.
Matroska, commonly used with the .mkv extension, is designed to hold multiple media streams and presentation information. Its features include selectable tracks, chapters, metadata, and support for streaming modes. The IETF’s RFC 9559, published in October 2024, specifies Matroska as an EBML-based audiovisual container and describes its tracks, chapters, tags, and streaming modes.
MP4 is also a container. An .mp4 file does not, by itself, tell you which video or audio encoding it contains. Codec identifiers can include details such as the profile and level, which matter to the player that must decode the streams.

Choose for the player or destination
Before choosing a container or converting a file, check the published requirements for the actual device, app, browser, or upload destination. Look for each of these details:
- Container: MKV, MP4, or another specified format.
- Video codec, profile, and level.
- Audio codec and any channel or other requirements.
- Resolution and frame rate.
- Subtitle type and support for any styling or attached fonts.
- Advanced features such as HDR, if your file uses them.
Do not treat general operating-system support as a guarantee for every app or device. Microsoft’s Media Foundation documentation describes MKV playback as dependent on supported codecs and notes limitations in that Windows framework’s handling of some captions, embedded fonts or images, menus, and supplemental files referenced by chapters. Those details apply to the documented framework, not automatically to every Windows player or other platform.

MP4 is a familiar choice for browser delivery, but support varies by browser and platform. Check the codecs as well as the extension. A file being named .mp4 is not enough to establish that it will play.
Subtitles, multiple tracks, and chapters
When MKV is a good fit
MKV is useful when you want one file to carry multiple language or commentary tracks, selectable subtitles, chapters, and associated metadata. Confirm that the intended player supports both the streams and any specialized features you rely on. For example, Microsoft’s documented MKV implementation notes that captions may not be selected by default and that some attached fonts, images, and menus may not render or appear in its described environment.

What to check in MP4
MP4 supports MPEG-4 Timed Text and has constructs for chapter markers. Subtitle formats, metadata capabilities, and chapter behavior are not identical across containers and players. Apple’s archived technical note describes format-specific limits and differences in chapter-marker representation; it should be treated as a feature-specific reference, not proof that MP4 cannot carry subtitles or chapters. Check the actual subtitle encoding and target-player behavior.

Changing the container and re-encoding the media are separate operations. If a conversion workflow can copy compatible encoded streams into a different container without re-encoding, it need not alter the encoded video data. But stream compatibility matters, and not every track or item of metadata is necessarily transferable in every workflow. Inspect the source file’s streams, check the destination’s requirements, and keep a backup before converting.

If the conversion re-encodes the video or audio, the settings used can change quality and file size. The words “MKV to MP4” alone do not tell you whether a conversion will re-encode, preserve every track, or produce a compatible file.
Which format should you use?
- For general playback or delivery: Prefer MP4 when broad compatibility is the priority or the destination requests it. Confirm that the actual video and audio codecs, profiles, levels, and settings are supported.
- For an archive with multiple selectable tracks: Prefer MKV when you need its track, subtitle, chapter, or metadata flexibility and know the intended player handles the file.
- For a streaming or upload workflow: Follow the service’s current specifications. A format suitable for a local video player may not meet a web delivery requirement. Apple’s HLS rules are one example of a delivery specification that pairs particular containers with codecs.
- When you are unsure: Inspect the file’s streams and consult the target’s official format and codec support. Neither extension alone settles compatibility.
