Facebook Live lets you broadcast video and audio in real time to a Facebook profile, Page, group, or event. You can start a basic stream from the Facebook app on an iPhone, Android phone, or iPad, or use a computer webcam. Streaming software and external cameras are options for more elaborate productions. Viewers can watch on phones and computers, and on compatible connected TVs or casting devices. The controls and eligibility rules vary by account and destination.
What is Facebook Live?
Facebook Live is Facebook’s live-broadcasting feature: a camera and microphone capture you or your event as it happens, and Facebook delivers the video to viewers while it is being recorded. Viewers can comment and react during the broadcast.
It is different from uploading a finished video, premiering a prerecorded video, making a video call, or sending a video from Facebook to a TV. With Live, the creator is broadcasting in real time. A stream may be started from a personal profile, Page, group, or event, where permissions and audience settings determine who can post and who can watch. Meta’s overview of Facebook Live describes the feature and its destinations.

- Capture: A phone, webcam, camera, or other video source records images and sound.
- Encode: The Facebook app or streaming software compresses the audio and video for transmission.
- Upload: The stream travels over the internet to Facebook. An external encoder typically connects using a server URL and stream key, through RTMP or RTMPS-compatible software.
- Deliver: Facebook processes and distributes the stream to viewers’ devices. Some delay is normal in internet video streaming.
- Interact: Viewers can comment and react; creators or moderators may have tools to manage comments and viewers.
- Replay: When the broadcast ends, the video may remain as a post at its destination, subject to Meta’s retention and content rules.
The audience is not automatically the same for every stream. A group video follows the group’s privacy and posting rules. Page live videos may be public; Meta’s Page guidance says anyone visiting the Page can see them. Check the destination and audience before going live. Meta provides instructions for Android, iPhone, iPad, and computer broadcasts, and directs computer users to Google Chrome. That does not mean every browser, app version, operating system, or account will show identical controls. Start with Meta’s general instructions for going live.
Which devices can watch Facebook Live?
Facebook Live can be watched on a phone, computer, or connected TV, depending on the available app, browser, and device support. Meta also documents casting Facebook videos from the iPhone or Android app to compatible devices, including Apple TV, Chromecast, Samsung TV, Amazon Fire TV, and Android TV. Compatibility is not universal: not every smart TV supports casting, and the phone and TV may need to be on the same Wi-Fi network. Before you go live
- Confirm eligibility and access. Meta’s general guidance says an account must be at least 60 days old. A Page or professional-mode profile must have at least 100 followers, and a Page broadcaster needs Facebook access or task access to create content. These are Meta’s stated requirements, not a guarantee that every account or destination will display the same controls.
- Choose the right destination and audience. Decide whether to broadcast from a profile, Page, group, or event, and check the audience setting before starting.
- Allow camera and microphone access. On a phone, check the app’s operating-system permissions. In a browser, allow camera and microphone access for Facebook.
- Check the connection. Use a reliable upload connection. For an important event, test beforehand and consider wired Ethernet or a backup connection.
- Prepare the picture and sound. Charge a mobile device, frame the shot, find suitable lighting, and test speech audio. A tripod, headphones, or external microphone may help, but is not required.
- Write a title or description. Give viewers enough context to know what the broadcast is about.

How to go live from a phone or tablet
In the Facebook app, the usual personal-profile workflow is:

- Open the Facebook app and tap What’s on your mind?
- Tap Live video.
- Check the destination and audience, then add a description or optional effects and features.
- Tap Go Live.
- Tap Finish when the broadcast is over.
On a group, open the group, tap Write something…, then choose Live video. Add a description and tap Go Live. If that option is missing, the group may restrict live posts or require approval; this is not necessarily a device problem. Meta’s instructions are available for Android and iPad. Names, icons, and placement can vary with the app version and account surface.
How to go live from a computer webcam
- Open Facebook in Google Chrome.
- Click What’s on your mind? and choose Live Video.
- Under Go Live, click Select, then choose where the broadcast will appear.
- Select the webcam and microphone you want to use, and allow browser permissions if prompted.
- Add a description, check the audience, and click Go Live.
For a Page, switch into the Page and select Live video. Choose Webcam for a direct camera broadcast, or Streaming software for an encoder. The exact flow can vary with Page access and interface updates; refer to Meta’s Page-specific instructions.
How to use OBS or other streaming software
Streaming software is optional. It is useful when you want scenes, screen capture, overlays, multiple cameras, or more control over audio. The broad workflow for OBS, Streamlabs, or another compatible encoder is:

- Select Streaming software as the video source.
- Copy the displayed Server URL and Stream key.
- In the encoder, select a custom streaming server or RTMP server, then enter the URL and key. Use RTMPS or another secure connection option when supported.
- Start the stream in the encoder and check that the preview appears on Facebook.
- Add the title and description, verify the audience, then choose Go Live Now or schedule the broadcast if that option is available.
Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: someone who has it may be able to send a broadcast to the associated post. Do not publish it in screenshots, shared documents, or forums. If it may have been exposed, refresh or regenerate it. Meta notes that a persistent stream key can be used again, but only one live video can be active at a time with that key. Recommended stream settings and duration
Meta’s published recommendations for higher-quality streams include:

These are recommendations, not minimum requirements. Match the bitrate to the upload capacity you can sustain; setting it too high can cause stuttering or disconnections. Lower resolution or bitrate if the network, computer, or encoder struggles. Meta’s guidance states a standard maximum broadcast duration of 8 hours; certain approved partners and organizations may have longer limits, typically up to 12 hours. Its current format guidance says replays may be available for up to 30 days, not permanently. Download or otherwise preserve important broadcasts before the retention window ends. Scheduling a live broadcast
Facebook supports scheduling live videos in advance. Meta says scheduling creates an announcement post when the broadcast is scheduled and a live-video post when it begins. This can help an audience plan for a class, event, demonstration, or announcement. Scheduling controls may depend on the destination and account. See Meta’s scheduling instructions.

For most first broadcasts, use a phone or built-in webcam you already have. Consider extra equipment only when the format genuinely needs it; a clear microphone and stable connection often matter more to a speech-heavy stream than buying a more elaborate camera.

Troubleshooting common problems
The Live option is missing
Check that you are signed into the intended profile or Page, that you have the necessary Page access, and that your account meets Meta’s stated eligibility rules. A group administrator may have disabled live posts or limited who can post. Account restrictions, regional availability, and interface changes can also affect the control. Try the official app, update it, or try Google Chrome on a computer. If the option is missing only in one group or Page, check that destination’s rules and permissions.
The camera or microphone does not work
Allow camera and microphone permissions for the Facebook app or Chrome. Close other programs using the camera, check any physical privacy shutter or mute switch, reconnect external devices, and select the intended input in the encoder. Restart the app or browser if needed; testing the camera or microphone in another application can help isolate a hardware issue.
The stream is blurry, delayed, or disconnects
Some delay is normal, but repeated buffering or disconnections can point to weak upload capacity, Wi-Fi congestion, changing mobile signal, demanding encoder settings, or an overloaded computer. Lower the bitrate or resolution, use Ethernet if practical, move closer to the router, close unnecessary applications, and check the Facebook preview before starting. Keep a backup connection for important events.

The stream key is rejected
Confirm the correct destination, server URL, and key; remove accidental spaces and check that the encoder is configured for the custom RTMP/RTMPS server. A key may have expired or been replaced. Retrieve the current details from Facebook, and never post them publicly.

A group live video cannot be posted
The group may prohibit live posts, require member approval, or limit posting to administrators or moderators. Group privacy also affects who can see the video. Ask a group administrator to check the rules rather than assuming your device is incompatible.
TV casting does not work
Confirm that the TV or streaming device supports the casting method, that both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network, and that their software is current. Casting is available only on compatible devices and app surfaces; it is not a feature of every smart TV.
Privacy and moderation checklist
- Verify the audience and destination before tapping Go Live.
- Remember that a Page broadcast may be public, while a group broadcast follows group privacy settings.
- Keep private addresses, documents, customer information, desktop notifications, and stream keys out of the camera view and screen capture.
- For a large broadcast, assign a moderator to monitor comments and handle disruption.
- Decide whether the replay should remain available, and save important video before Meta’s stated retention window expires.
Start with the simplest setup that meets the need: a phone for portability, a webcam for a stationary presenter, or streaming software when you need production controls. A smart TV is primarily a viewing option, not the normal way to create a Facebook Live broadcast.
