Spoilers for the Season 2 finale of Severance. Cold Harbor is both the last file Mark completes in Lumon’s macrodata refinement program and the room where Gemma’s 25th innie is sent to dismantle a crib. The finale reveals the test is tied to Gemma’s pain outside Lumon, but it does not explain the company’s full endgame.
What happens in the Cold Harbor finale?
After learning from Cobel that his completed files have been creating new consciousnesses for Gemma, Mark finishes Cold Harbor. Lumon celebrates the milestone, giving him an opportunity to reach the testing floor. There, Gemma’s final innie is dismantling a crib. Mark interrupts the test and helps her escape.

As they make their way through Lumon, Mark’s innie and outie switch. At the exit, Gemma leaves, but innie Mark chooses to stay with Helly rather than follow her out. So the rescue succeeds for Gemma, but it does not reunite her with Mark as a couple.
Why is Gemma dismantling a crib?
The crib is connected to a painful experience Gemma had outside Lumon. In a March 21, 2025 interview with Thomas Floyd for The Washington Post, series creator Dan Erickson said the crib was “representative of a very raw and a very visceral pain that she experienced on the outside.” He described the purpose of the test as probing what might cross the severance divide: “There’s always a sense of trying to see what will transcend the barrier.” Read Erickson’s interview in The Washington Post.

Those comments support reading the scene as a test of whether a painful outside memory can affect Gemma’s severed selves. The episode does not establish that Lumon has found a universal way to remove emotion or that the test proves such a method works.
What does Cold Harbor reveal about Mark’s files?
The finale reveals that Mark’s refinement work has been building separate consciousnesses for Gemma. Each completed file corresponds to a new innie; Cold Harbor is the final file and the test for her 25th and last innie. The file is therefore not simply an abstract workplace assignment: its completion is directly tied to Lumon’s work on Gemma.

Why does innie Mark stay with Helly?
Mark’s choice complicates what might otherwise look like a straightforward escape. Erickson has described innie Mark’s decision as an assertion that he is a person in his own right, while also allowing that it can be seen as both righteous and selfish. Erickson has offered a thematic lens, rather than a complete answer to the plot mystery. He said of Lumon: “The whole thing with Lumon has always been that a company is like a human being — meaning when it’s severed and when the pieces are separated, it’s weaker, and when the pieces come together, it’s stronger.” The idea of separated parts and reunification helps frame the series, but it should not be treated as a literal explanation of every detail of the Cold Harbor project.
