What Is Chris Lilley Doing Now? His Wildlife Videos and Comedy Work

Chris Lilley began posting wildlife-focused travel videos on YouTube, showing encounters with Australian animals. But reports did not establish that he had permanently left comedy or made a full-time career change: in August 2024, The New Daily said it was unclear whether the videos were a career move or a hobby.

What was Chris Lilley’s reported career change?

In 2024, Lilley was making informal, wildlife-focused videos about travelling around Australia and encountering animals. The New Daily counted 10 nature- or animal-focused videos in an article published on 27 August, saying the earliest had appeared about six months earlier. The videos included stingrays, echidnas and wombats, with locations such as Kosciuszko National Park, the Ningaloo Coast and Tasmania (The New Daily, 27 August 2024).

7NEWS called the YouTube wildlife series Lilley In The Wild in November 2024. Its examples included wombats in Tasmania, marine life on the Ningaloo Coast, kangaroos and grey nurse sharks (7NEWS, 15 November 2024). That title is 7NEWS’s wording; The New Daily described the videos without establishing it as a formal series name.

The “career change” description therefore needs qualification. The videos showed a different format from Lilley’s scripted character comedy, but The New Daily explicitly said it could not tell whether he was pursuing a new career or simply a hobby. The reports do not establish that he quit comedy.

Why were his shows removed from Netflix?

In 2020, Netflix removed four Lilley series: We Can Be Heroes, Summer Heights High, Angry Boys and Jonah From Tonga. SBS reported that the shows had originally aired on ABC between 2005 and 2014 and that the removals followed years of criticism over portrayals involving blackface and brownface (SBS News, 11 June 2020). They were removed from Netflix; that is not the same as saying the ABC cancelled them at the time.

Coverage of the removals reflected differing views about how to handle older works. ABC News quoted screenwriter Benjamin Law, then co-chair of the Screen Diversity Inclusion Network, saying: “We are in 2020 now and I think if you talk to black people, and you look at the history, we know that blackface is wrong.” The same report quoted University of Melbourne academic Lauren Rosewarne on the importance of historical context and the limits of simply erasing cultural works (ABC News, 12 June 2020). These are distinct perspectives: Law addressed the harm and history of blackface, while Rosewarne raised questions about context and removal.

Did Lilley stop making comedy?

The available reports do not support that conclusion. The New Daily reported that Lilley said in 2023, “I’m writing all the time,” and quoted him saying he hoped to create new characters or bring old ones back, with “lots of scripts and ideas floating around.” Those are reported comments about his writing and ideas, not confirmation that a particular project was made (The New Daily, 27 August 2024).

In May 2025, The Guardian reviewed Mr G’s Room, a podcast reviving the Summer Heights High character Mr G (The Guardian, 12 May 2025). The wildlife videos and the podcast are different kinds of work; the reporting does not say one replaced the other.

What is known about his work now?

The latest reporting cited here is from May 2025. It documents the wildlife videos, Lilley’s reported comments about writing, and the Mr G’s Room podcast, but it does not establish what he is doing in October 2026, whether the wildlife videos are still active, or whether he made a permanent career transition.
