A remux release repackages selected video, audio, and subtitle streams into a media container—often MKV—without re-encoding those streams. That preserves the encoded data that was copied, but it does not mean the file is uncompressed, contains everything from the original disc, or will play natively on every device.

What “remux” means

A media file has three useful layers to distinguish:

  • Streams: the encoded video, audio, and subtitle tracks.
  • Container: the wrapper that holds those streams, such as MKV, MP4, or TS, along with information such as track labels and chapters.
  • Player: the app or device that reads the container and decodes the streams, such as Plex, Jellyfin, VLC, Kodi, a television, or a hardware player.

Remuxing primarily changes how streams are packaged. It can also remove or reorder tracks, change labels or metadata, preserve or rewrite chapters, and adjust timestamps. Think of it as rebinding a book: its cover and appendices may change, but the pages that remain have not been rewritten.

In FFmpeg, this operation is called streamcopy and is requested with -c copy. The streams are copied without decoding and encoding, so the operation is generally fast and adds no generational quality loss to the copied streams.

What a “remux release” usually contains

In release naming, “remux” commonly refers to a file made from a Blu-ray, UHD Blu-ray, or another high-quality source by copying the main feature’s video and selected audio and subtitle tracks into a playable file. It is a naming convention, not an independently enforced certification: the label alone does not prove a file’s source or how it was made.

“Lossless” in this context means lossless relative to the encoded streams that were copied. Blu-ray video is already compressed, and a remux preserves any compression artifacts or defects in its source. Nor does the label promise a byte-for-byte copy of a disc: a remux may omit menus, extras, alternate cuts, or tracks the creator did not select.

Remux, encode, Web-DL, WebRip, or disc backup?

Type Was the video re-encoded? What it preserves or represents Typical purpose
Remux No, for the copied video stream The included encoded streams; other disc content may be left out Keep high source fidelity in a convenient media file
Encode or transcode Yes A newly encoded version; quality and characteristics depend on settings Reduce size or target compatibility
Full disc backup Usually not Disc structure and, depending on the backup, menus, extras, titles, and tracks Preserve the disc experience or organization
Web-DL Usually copied from a streaming source A stream from a digital distribution source; quality depends on that source and its encoding Represent streaming-source distribution
WebRip Often captured or processed from a stream Quality depends on the capture and any subsequent processing Represent a stream-derived release where a direct download is unavailable

These labels describe different things and are not a simple quality ranking. A remux can retain a high-bitrate disc stream, while a well-made encode may be the better choice for a phone, limited storage, or a slow connection. A full disc backup retains more of the disc experience than a typical feature-only remux. A transcode decodes and encodes again, unlike streamcopy, and may introduce another generation of lossy compression.

Why remux files can be so large

A remux keeps the source’s encoded bitrate rather than reducing it through another video encode. Its size depends on the combined streams and their duration, not just the resolution. Factors include:

  • HDR format and the source’s mastering characteristics.

A remux is not raw or uncompressed video. Removing an unwanted audio track or subtitle can shrink a file without changing the main video; a substantial size reduction usually requires re-encoding. File size alone cannot prove that a file is a remux: sources and selected streams vary too much for one universal size threshold.

What a remux preserves—and what it may not

If copied correctly, the remux retains the encoded data of the selected video and audio streams. It can retain HDR signaling, lossless audio, chapters, and track metadata when the tool, container, and choices preserve them. That is not a guarantee that the file behaves exactly like the disc in every playback chain.

  • Selection matters: omitted tracks, extras, menus, or alternate cuts are not restored by calling the result a remux.
  • Container support matters: MKV, MP4, and TS do not have identical compatibility or support for every stream type.
  • Playback support matters: a player may not decode a video or audio codec, handle image-based subtitles, or pass HDR and lossless audio through as intended.
  • Conversion changes the result: a server that transcodes can alter the video or audio sent to the client, even if the stored file is a remux.
  • Source quality still matters: remuxing preserves defects already present in the source; it does not repair them.

Will a remux play on Plex, Jellyfin, a TV, or a media player?

That depends on the whole playback path, not just the file extension. A media server may handle the same file in three ways:

  • Direct Play: the client accepts the container, codecs, and stream configuration, so the original streams are sent without conversion.
  • Remux: the server repackages or rearranges streams without re-encoding them, for example when a client needs a different container.
  • Transcode: the server decodes and re-encodes some or all of the media because the client or connection cannot accept it as supplied.

MKV is a container, not a guarantee of universal playback. Before blaming the file, check the client’s support for its video and audio codecs, subtitle type, HDR format, and container; then check network throughput and the server’s ability to transcode. Audio passthrough also depends on the player, connection, receiver or soundbar, and settings.

Subtitles can be a particular complication: image-based subtitles may not be supported by a client, and burning subtitles into the picture requires video processing. HDR support varies by format and playback chain. A powerful server can help with transcoding, but it cannot make an incompatible client decode a stream natively.

For Plex libraries, a conventional media file is often more practical than a disc image. Plex says it does not support ISO files or disc structures such as VIDEO_TS and BDMV, whose menus and multi-title navigation do not fit consistently across clients. See Plex’s disc-image format guidance.

How to inspect a file that claims to be a remux

Use a media inspector rather than trusting the filename. FFprobe, included among the FFmpeg command-line tools, can show stream types, codecs, resolution, duration, and container details:

ffprobe -hide_banner -i "input.mkv"

For a compact stream and format listing:

ffprobe -v error
  -show_entries stream=index,codec_type,codec_name,profile,width,height,channels:format=format_name,duration,size
  -of json
  "input.mkv"

Compare the reported tracks and characteristics with what you expect from the stated source. A low bitrate, unexpected resolution, or evidence of filtering may be inconsistent with a typical disc remux; missing lossless audio may simply mean that track was not selected. These clues can raise questions, but inspection cannot prove provenance or establish that a stream was never re-encoded. File size and a “remux” filename are not proof either.

How to remux streams with FFmpeg

To copy all streams from an input into a different container, use explicit mapping and streamcopy:

ffmpeg -i "input.mkv" -map 0 -c copy "output.mp4"

For a transport-stream input and MKV output:

ffmpeg -i "input.ts" -map 0 -c copy "output.mkv"

To keep only the first video stream and first audio stream:

ffmpeg -i "input.mkv"
  -map 0:v:0
  -map 0:a:0
  -c copy
  "output.mkv"

FFmpeg documents -map for selecting streams and -c copy for copying them. A successful streamcopy should complete far faster than a full encode and leave the copied streams’ quality unchanged; the output is usually similar in size, minus any removed tracks and differences in container overhead. It can fail when the destination cannot represent a codec or other stream information. See the FFmpeg documentation on streamcopy and stream selection.

By contrast, -c:v libx264 asks FFmpeg to encode video. That is transcoding, not a pure remux.

If streamcopy fails

  1. Inspect the input streams with FFprobe and identify which track or format is incompatible.
  2. Try MKV as the destination; it supports a broad range of video and audio types, though no container supports everything.
  3. Use -map to include only the streams you need.
  4. If the playback device requires a different codec, make a deliberate transcode instead of describing the result as a remux.
  5. Keep the source file until the output has been tested, including the desired audio, subtitles, chapters, and HDR behavior.

HandBrake is intended for deliberate encoding rather than unchanged streamcopy. Its official presets may alter resolution, frame rate, audio handling, and other characteristics; its documentation also notes that MKV supports many formats MP4 does not.

Turning a disc you own into an MKV

A disc-to-file workflow is different from changing the container of a file you already have. It generally involves identifying the correct title or playlist, choosing the video, audio, subtitle, and chapter streams to keep, then extracting or copying them into a playable container and testing the result.

MakeMKV describes software for converting DVD and Blu-ray material into MKV while preserving information such as multiple tracks, chapters, and metadata. Its site says Blu-ray features are free while the software is in beta; that is a statement about its current beta policy, not a promise that every feature will always be free. MakeMKV also documents makemkvcon for command-line automation. FFmpeg is useful for streamcopy and stream selection; HandBrake is useful when the goal is a smaller, newly encoded file.

A file being technically remuxed says nothing about whether its source was obtained legally. Copyright and anti-circumvention laws differ by country and situation; copying an encrypted disc can raise issues separate from ordinary playback or personal archiving, and redistribution may infringe copyright. In the United States, the Electronic Frontier Foundation’s discussion of Section 1201 describes access controls as relevant to anti-circumvention analysis. It is not legal advice, and a tool’s ability to copy or decrypt a disc does not establish that a particular use is lawful.

Choose the format for the job

Choose a remux for source fidelity

A remux suits a local archive when retaining the selected source streams matters more than saving storage. It is most useful when the playback client supports those streams and the network can sustain their bitrate.

Choose an encode for size or compatibility

An encode is practical when storage is tight, remote playback is frequent, or devices have limited codec support. Device-oriented presets can make playback more predictable, but may reduce resolution, limit frame rate, change audio, or create a new lossy video generation.

Choose a full disc backup for disc structure

Keep a disc backup when menus, extras, multiple cuts, or complex navigation matter more than convenient playback and storage use. A feature-only remux is not a substitute for those structures.

Before you keep or make one

  • Was the video copied, or re-encoded?
  • Which audio, subtitle, chapter, and video streams are included?
  • What is the source, and is the release label trustworthy?
  • Can the actual client decode the codecs and handle the subtitle and HDR formats?
  • Could audio passthrough, subtitles, or network limits trigger server conversion?
  • Do you value source fidelity, disc completeness, convenient playback, or smaller files most?
  • Does the use comply with the law that applies where you live?
