A meme is recognizable cultural material that spreads through imitation and changes as people reuse it. Today, that usually means a recurring image, video, sound, phrase, hashtag, or format that people copy, adapt, and circulate online. A single post can be popular or viral without being a meme: what makes a meme distinctive is the existence of a recognizable pattern and a family of variations.

The short definition: a meme is more than a funny picture

In everyday internet usage, a meme may be a captioned photograph, reaction GIF, short video, audio clip, catchphrase, image template, parody, hashtag, or deliberately absurd format. It does not have to be funny. Memes can express grief, anger, political criticism, solidarity, identity, instruction, or uncertainty just as easily as they communicate a joke.

The common thread is reuse with variation. People recognize an existing cultural element, use it as a model, and change its words, images, timing, sound, language, or context. Each version retains enough of the original for others to recognize the connection, while adding something new.

This is why it is more accurate to think of an internet meme as a family of related digital items than as one file or one definitive post. The original may disappear while the format continues. A meme can also move between platforms, languages, fandoms, political communities, and subcultures, acquiring new meanings along the way.

Where did the word “meme” come from?

Biologist Richard Dawkins coined the word meme in the first edition of The Selfish Gene, published in 1976. He was not describing online jokes or predicting social-media culture. Consumer internet culture of that kind did not yet exist.

Dawkins proposed the term as a way to discuss how cultural information can be transmitted, copied, modified, compete for attention, and persist. His examples included melodies, ideas, catchphrases, clothing fashions, and learned methods of making things. The word was modeled partly on gene and came from a Greek root associated with imitation.

The comparison with genes can be useful as an analogy, but it has limits. Genes are inherited through biological reproduction; memes spread through human learning, imitation, communication, and participation. Cultural transmission is not simply biological inheritance in another form. Modern research on digital memes therefore builds on Dawkins’s starting point without treating the analogy as a complete scientific definition.

For readers who want the historical source, “The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins” is the book that introduced the word into this broader discussion. It is important to approach it as a work about cultural transmission and evolution in a broad theoretical sense—not as a manual about modern meme-making.

How the original idea became an internet phenomenon

The internet did not invent cultural imitation. People have always repeated sayings, reenacted scenes, adapted songs, copied fashions, and reshaped stories. Digital networks made that process unusually visible, fast, searchable, and measurable.

Online, a person can copy a template, add a caption, replace an image, imitate a sound, edit a video, or adapt a format to a new situation with relatively little technical effort. Other people can then respond with their own versions. Platforms and recommendation systems may increase a format’s visibility, but visibility alone does not make something a meme. The crucial process is participatory reuse.

A meme may begin with a recognizable image, an accidental facial expression, a line from a film, a public event, a song, a user-created drawing, or a simple textual structure. Once others understand how to adapt it, the source becomes a kind of cultural vocabulary. The audience is expected to know not only what is shown, but what the format conventionally means.

Five features that usually make something a meme

There is no universal legal or scientific checklist that every meme must satisfy. However, these five features provide a practical way to distinguish memes from ordinary online content.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Recognizable shared material. Later versions preserve an identifiable image, phrase, sound, structure, joke, editing style, or cultural reference.
  2. Replication or reuse. People use the material as a model rather than merely watching or sharing one isolated item.
  3. Variation. Users alter the wording, imagery, timing, language, tone, or situation.
  4. Distributed participation. The form develops through contributions from multiple people or communities, rather than remaining one fixed authorial version.
  5. Social meaning. Recognition of the format helps communicate humor, criticism, identity, irony, solidarity, political positioning, or another shared attitude.

These are tendencies, not strict admission requirements. Some memes are nearly all text. Others depend on video editing, music, gestures, or visual composition. Some remain inside a small community and never become globally famous. Others spread across the internet while changing so much that only a faint connection to the original remains.

Meme versus viral content: what is the difference?

Viral describes the scale or speed of circulation. Memetic describes recognizable reuse and variation.

Term What it emphasizes Example
Viral content Many people view or share the same item, often very quickly. A news clip that millions of people watch once and pass along unchanged.
Meme People adapt a recognizable element into multiple related versions. A clip that users repeatedly quote, remix, parody, reenact, or apply to new situations.

The categories can overlap. A meme can become viral, and a viral post can become part of a meme family. But popularity is not enough by itself. A widely viewed photograph may be viral without being memetic, while a niche community may develop a genuine meme that never reaches a mass audience.

The most useful distinction is between replication of the same item and participatory variation around a shared template or idea.

Common types and formats of internet memes

Memes are not defined by one visual style. Common forms include:

  • Captioned image macros: a familiar image paired with replaceable text.
  • Reaction images and GIFs: short visual responses that communicate an emotion or attitude.
  • Short-form video and audio trends: clips, sounds, gestures, dances, or editing patterns that others recreate or reinterpret.
  • Catchphrases and copypasta: repeated lines or blocks of text that circulate in altered or unchanged forms.
  • Templates: images or videos with a structure that invites users to substitute their own words or situations.
  • Remixes, parodies, and reenactments: versions that imitate an existing work while shifting its tone or meaning.
  • Hashtag campaigns and participatory challenges: formats organized around a shared prompt or tag.
  • Political slogans and visual symbols: memetic forms used for persuasion, protest, criticism, or group identity.
  • Fan edits and mashups: combinations of existing media, often reshaped for a particular fandom or community.
  • Anti-memes and absurdist formats: deliberately confusing, deconstructed, or self-referential versions that play with the expectations of meme culture.

The format itself can carry meaning. A particular facial expression may conventionally signal disbelief. A certain sound may imply dramatic overreaction. A familiar editing pattern may tell the audience that the creator is being ironic. Understanding a meme therefore requires attention to both its visible content and the community knowledge surrounding its form.

How memes spread and evolve

Memes spread through several forces working together:

  • Imitation: people can easily understand and reproduce the basic pattern.
  • Social recommendation: friends, followers, creators, and communities pass the format along.
  • Algorithmic visibility: platform recommendations can expose a version to new audiences.
  • Community norms: groups teach one another how a format is conventionally used and when it is considered funny, offensive, outdated, or deliberately wrong.
  • Cultural timing: a format may suddenly fit a current event, public mood, celebrity moment, or shared frustration.

Low barriers to participation help. A format is easier to reuse when its structure is immediately recognizable and users can modify it without advanced technical skills. Flexibility matters too: a meme that applies to many situations has more opportunities to be adapted.

Memetic evolution is not a straight line from an original creator to a final version. Different communities preserve different elements. A phrase may survive while the image changes; a sound may remain while its meaning reverses; an originally sincere post may become ironic. Translation can create new variations rather than merely reproducing the first one. Eventually, people may recognize the format even after forgetting its source.

Researchers have therefore described internet memes as groups of digital texts connected by similarity and variation, not as isolated files with one authentic version.

Why memes can be funny, serious, or difficult to interpret

Humor is common because a familiar format lets a creator establish a premise quickly and then introduce an unexpected caption or situation. But comedy is only one use. A meme can also communicate:

Memes are powerful partly because they compress complicated attitudes. A known image or sound allows a creator to communicate much of the emotional background with very little text. The audience supplies the missing context from shared knowledge.

Irony makes this efficient but also unstable. One meme may mock a subject, the audience, the platform, and the conventions of meme-making at the same time. People outside the originating community may read the same item literally, miss the joke, or misunderstand who is being criticized. Memes often depend on layers of context that are invisible to viewers encountering them for the first time.

Memes, identity, politics, and public conversation

Memes are a form of participatory culture. Users are not simply consuming finished media; they are quoting, editing, reframing, and extending it. This gives ordinary users a way to respond to celebrities, brands, institutions, news events, and political debates.

A meme can make a community feel visible and connected. It can provide a shared vocabulary for an experience that would be difficult to describe directly. It can challenge an official narrative or make a powerful institution the subject of ridicule. In this sense, memes are not merely disposable entertainment: they are tools for social communication.

They are not automatically progressive or harmless. Memes can reinforce assumptions about gender, class, nationality, race, technology, or political ideology. They can spread propaganda, encourage harassment, normalize dehumanizing language, or turn a complex event into a misleading emotional shortcut. Their speed and ambiguity can make responsibility difficult to trace, especially when a format is repeatedly copied and altered.

Memes can also produce context collapse. A joke created for one small community may travel to an audience that does not share its assumptions. A satirical image can be mistaken for a sincere political statement, or a supposedly ironic format can be used to express a belief directly. The same adaptability that helps a meme travel can make its effects unpredictable.

For readers who want a deeper study of this subject, “Memes in Digital Culture” by Limor Shifman examines internet memes, meme genres, virality, political participation, and digital culture. “The World Made Meme” by Ryan M. Milner is another useful path for exploring how memetic media are collectively created, transformed, circulated, and used in public conversation.

Who owns a meme? Copyright and legal caution

There is no blanket rule that every meme is free to copy, and widespread reposting does not automatically remove legal rights. A meme may incorporate a photograph, film or television frame, news image, game asset, drawing, music, or private person’s likeness. Copyright, trademark, privacy, and publicity concerns can all vary according to the material, the use, and the country involved.

In the United States, fair use is a fact-specific analysis, not an automatic exemption for memes. It considers factors including:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • the purpose and character of the use, including whether it is commercial and whether it is transformative;
  • the nature of the original work;
  • the amount and substantiality of the material used; and
  • the effect on the potential market for the original.

Criticism, commentary, parody, and other socially valuable expression may support a fair-use argument, but adding a caption does not guarantee that the use is fair. Commercial use can create additional risk. The rules also differ outside the United States, so this general explanation is not individualized legal advice.

Safer practices include creating original images and videos, using public-domain or appropriately licensed assets, checking the terms attached to third-party material, and seeking permission when practical. If a meme is being used in advertising, merchandise, journalism, or another commercial setting, obtain specific legal guidance rather than assuming that internet popularity makes the material available for free.

Why memes matter

Memes combine cultural familiarity with low-cost participation. They let people answer mass media and institutions in a language that is quick, flexible, emotional, and easy to adapt. They can create belonging, make an event discussable, and give a community a shared symbol.

The same qualities also explain their risks. Speed can outrun verification. Compression can remove important context. Adaptability can turn criticism into harassment or allow propaganda to disguise itself as a joke. A meme’s influence comes from the same characteristics that make it entertaining: recognizability, emotional force, rapid circulation, and the invitation to participate.

So the best definition is not “a funny picture on the internet.” A meme is a piece—or, more precisely, a family—of cultural material that people recognize, imitate, circulate, and transform. Internet memes are one highly visible modern expression of a much older human process: culture spreading by imitation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a meme have to be funny?

No. Memes can communicate humor, but they are also used for political criticism, grief, anger, solidarity, identity, instruction, and social commentary. Their defining features are recognizable reuse and variation, not comedy.

Is every viral post a meme?

No. “Viral” describes rapid or extensive circulation, while “meme” emphasizes a reusable cultural pattern. A post can be viral without being adapted. If people repeatedly remix, quote, parody, or apply it to new situations, it may become part of a meme family.

Who invented the word meme?

Richard Dawkins coined the word in the first edition of The Selfish Gene in 1976. He used it for cultural elements transmitted through imitation, such as melodies, ideas, catchphrases, fashions, and learned practices—not specifically for internet images.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are memes copyright-free?

No. A meme may include copyrighted photography, film, television, music, artwork, or other material. In the United States, some transformative uses may qualify as fair use, but that depends on the facts. Adding a caption or finding an image online does not automatically make a use lawful.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: A meme is recognizable cultural material that people copy, adapt, and give new meaning to. Internet memes are not defined by being funny, famous, anonymous, or copyright-free; they are defined by participatory reuse and variation.
