Chuck Woolery, the first host of the television series Wheel of Fortune and the longtime host of Love Connection, died November 23, 2024, at his home in Horseshoe Bay, Texas. He was 83.
His death was announced by Mark Young, Woolery’s friend and co-host on the podcast Blunt Force Truth. Woolery’s wife, Kristen, was present, according to contemporaneous reports from The Associated Press and The Washington Post. A cause of death was not initially disclosed.
The original daytime host of Wheel of Fortune
Woolery hosted the original daytime version of Wheel of Fortune when the program debuted on NBC on January 6, 1975. Contestants spun a large wheel, selected letters and solved word puzzles; Woolery was the show’s first television host.
Calling him the “original Wheel of Fortune host” is accurate, but the distinction matters. Woolery hosted the program’s daytime run from its premiere until 1981. He did not host the later syndicated prime-time version that became internationally familiar. Pat Sajak succeeded him late in 1981.

Woolery’s departure followed a contract dispute involving creator Merv Griffin. Obituary reports have differed on the precise financial details, so the departure is best described as a contract dispute rather than as a settled account of a specific salary negotiation.
The series was Woolery’s breakthrough as a national television personality, but it was not the role that ultimately defined the largest portion of his hosting career.
Love Connection made him a television institution
In 1983, Woolery began hosting the syndicated dating show Love Connection. The program ran until 1994 and featured contestants recounting their dates while a studio audience participated in the matchmaking process.
Woolery hosted more than 2,000 episodes—often reported as more than 2,100—and developed a relaxed, conversational style that made the show’s unusual mix of romance, confession and audience reaction work. His familiar sign-off, “We’ll be back in two and two,” referred to the show’s return from a commercial break.
For many viewers, Love Connection became Woolery’s signature program. Wheel of Fortune established him, but more than a decade of syndicated dating television made his voice, timing and catchphrase part of the fabric of American daytime and early-evening television.

A career across game shows
Woolery remained a prolific host after leaving Wheel of Fortune. His credits included the word game Scrabble, as well as The Dating Game, Greed and Lingo.
The Television Academy lists more than 2,000 episodes of Love Connection among his accomplishments and identifies his major hosting work across several generations of game shows. He received a Daytime Emmy nomination in 1978 and was inducted into the American TV Game Show Hall of Fame in 2007.
That range is important to understanding Woolery’s place in television history. He was not simply a host attached to one famous title. He worked in formats built around wordplay, competition, dating and audience participation, adapting his quick humor and direct delivery to each one.

Charles Herbert Woolery was born in Ashland, Kentucky, on March 16, 1941. Before becoming a full-time television host, he served in the U.S. Navy, attended Morehead State College—now Morehead State University—and pursued music and acting.
He was a member of the psychedelic-pop duo The Avant-Garde with Elkin “Bubba” Fowler. The group’s 1968 single “Naturally Stoned” reached No. 40 on the Billboard Hot 100, giving Woolery a modest recording career before television became his dominant public identity.

The song later inspired the title of a short-lived 2003 Game Show Network reality series, Naturally Stoned, about Woolery and his family. Copies of the song—including CDs and original 45-rpm records—can appear through specialist music retailers and collector marketplaces, but availability, condition and authenticity vary. They are collectibles connected to Woolery’s early career, not official Woolery merchandise.
His early screen work included appearances on the children’s program New Zoo Revue and acting roles. Retrospective reporting has also credited singer and television personality Merv Griffin with helping steer Woolery toward game-show hosting after encountering him as a performer.
From game-show host to political podcaster
In later life, Woolery became increasingly active in radio, online video and podcasting, where he expressed conservative and libertarian political views. His commentary program Save Us Chuck Woolery developed into Blunt Force Truth, which he co-hosted with Mark Young—the friend who announced Woolery’s death.
That later public identity was markedly different from the polished, broadly accessible television persona associated with Wheel of Fortune and Love Connection. Woolery became especially visible as a conservative commentator during the Trump era and used social media to promote his views.
His public record also included controversy. In 2020, Woolery posted claims about COVID-19 that criticized public-health authorities. After his son tested positive, Woolery acknowledged that COVID-19 was real and present. The episode was part of the public life he led in his final years, but it should not be presented as representative of the programs he hosted or of their owners and producers.

Woolery’s place in game-show history
Woolery’s career followed a two-part arc. First came the television host who helped establish a new daytime institution with the 1975 launch of Wheel of Fortune. Then came the seasoned syndicated host whose timing, humor and recognizable sign-off made Love Connection one of the era’s most durable dating programs.
He was neither the creator of Wheel of Fortune nor the host of its modern syndicated prime-time format; those distinctions belong elsewhere in the show’s history. His contribution was that of its inaugural television host, the performer who helped give the early program its voice and shape.
Woolery’s later political commentary complicated the public image created by his entertainment career, but it did not erase the scale of that career. Across Wheel of Fortune, Love Connection, Scrabble and other programs, he became one of the most recognizable American game-show hosts of the late 20th century.
Where to revisit his work
Availability for older television programs changes by country, platform and licensing agreement. Love Connection may appear through ad-supported or transactional streaming services in some markets, but readers should check current local listings rather than assume that a particular service carries the program. Physical game-show merchandise, including licensed Wheel of Fortune games, may be more consistent than streaming access.
