16:9 aspect ratio

What Is a 16:9 Aspect Ratio? YouTube Video Dimensions Explained

16:9 describes a video’s shape, not its resolution. See YouTube’s common dimensions and how to choose an appropriate size for your footage.

A 16:9 aspect ratio means a video frame is 16 units wide for every 9 units high. It describes the frame’s shape, not its resolution: 1920 × 1080 and 1280 × 720 are both 16:9, but 1920 × 1080 contains more pixels. YouTube uses 16:9 as its standard aspect ratio on computers, but it does not require every upload to use that shape.

What does 16:9 mean?

The ratio compares width with height. A 16:9 frame is wider than it is tall; for example, a frame 16 inches across would be 9 inches high. The same proportion applies to pixel dimensions: divide the width by the height, and the result is approximately 1.78.

Aspect ratio and resolution answer different questions. Aspect ratio describes the shape of the image. Resolution gives the number of pixels across and down. Two videos can therefore have the same 16:9 shape at different resolutions.

Common 16:9 YouTube video dimensions

YouTube lists these standard video dimensions. The 720p, 1080p, 1440p, 2160p, and 4320p labels are commonly used to refer to the vertical pixel count.

Label Dimensions Aspect ratio
4320p 7680 × 4320 16:9
2160p (4K) 3840 × 2160 16:9
1440p 2560 × 1440 16:9
1080p 1920 × 1080 16:9
720p 1280 × 720 16:9
480p 854 × 480 approximately 16:9
360p 640 × 360 16:9
240p 426 × 240 approximately 16:9

These dimensions come from YouTube Help’s recommended upload encoding settings (page accessed October 2026). The smaller listed sizes are rounded pixel dimensions, so their width-to-height calculation is close to, rather than mathematically exact, 16:9.

Is 16:9 required for YouTube?

No. YouTube identifies 16:9 as the standard aspect ratio for its player on computers, and the player adjusts to an ideal size when a video uses another ratio. The Android app also adapts its player to vertical, square, and horizontal video. A video can be uploaded in its original shape instead of being converted to 16:9.

Do not add black bars or padding just to make a non-16:9 video fit a 16:9 frame. YouTube advises against adding padding directly to a video because it can interfere with dynamic player sizing; its partner formatting guidance likewise advises retaining the native aspect ratio and avoiding letterboxing or pillarboxing.

Choosing a 16:9 resolution

Choose a resolution that suits the detail in the source footage and the way viewers are likely to watch it. Higher pixel dimensions can preserve more image detail, but they also mean larger video files and greater storage and upload demands. That is a practical trade-off, not a guarantee of a particular playback result.

  • 1080p (1920 × 1080): a common full-HD frame size.
  • 1440p (2560 × 1440) and 4K (3840 × 2160): higher-resolution choices when the source footage has the detail to benefit from them and larger files are acceptable.
  • 4320p (7680 × 4320): the largest dimension listed in YouTube’s guidance; use it only when the source and workflow justify the substantial pixel dimensions.

When possible, keep the export’s frame rate the same as the footage you recorded. Resolution is only one part of an export: YouTube’s encoding guidance also covers video and audio codecs and reference bitrates for different resolutions and frame-rate classes. Check its current upload encoding settings for those details rather than treating 16:9 as a complete export recipe.

How to set a 16:9 project or export

Editing software uses different menu names, but the key is to set the project or export frame to a width and height with a 16:9 proportion, then avoid changing the footage’s shape by stretching it.

  1. Check the source footage. Identify its frame dimensions and aspect ratio. If it is already 16:9, use a matching project shape.
  2. Set the project or sequence dimensions. Choose a 16:9 size such as 1920 × 1080 or 1280 × 720. For other resolutions, use the dimensions in the table.
  3. Fit footage without distorting it. If the source has a different shape, retain its proportions. Cropping may remove image content; adding bars or padding can produce unwanted borders and is not recommended as a way to force the YouTube player to 16:9.
  4. Export at a suitable resolution and frame rate. Keep the recorded frame rate when possible, and consult YouTube’s current codec and bitrate guidance for the export settings.
  5. Check the exported file before uploading. Confirm the frame dimensions, look for unintended cropping or stretching, and make sure the image has not acquired borders you did not intend.

Aspect ratio and always-on YouTube video

If your 16:9 video is a documentary, a standard upload is different from a continuous live stream: the former is watched on demand, while the latter stays live on your channel. For a YouTube live stream made from uploaded video, StreamNeo runs the video or playlist from the cloud; it is not a camera-based live broadcast.

Or let it run in the cloud

Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It accepts video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start your StreamNeo free day.
