Upload Speed and Bitrate Settings for YouTube Live Streaming

YouTube Live bitrate depends on codec, resolution and frame rate. Use the matching recommendation, budget upload headroom, and test with representative audio and motion.

For a reliable YouTube Live stream, choose a video bitrate from YouTube’s recommendation for your exact codec, resolution and frame rate, then make sure your measured upload capacity can carry the stream with headroom. Upload speed—not download speed—is the relevant network measure. YouTube recommends leaving 20% room for a single stream; add any backup stream’s bitrate before calculating.

Choose the video bitrate for your stream

YouTube’s recommended live bitrate depends on the video ingestion codec, resolution and frame rate. Match all three to your encoder settings. The figures below are YouTube Help recommendations surfaced on 2026-10-03; they are guidance, not guarantees of stream quality or connection performance. Recheck YouTube’s live encoder settings in case the recommendations change.

Resolution and frame rate AV1 or H.265 recommended bitrate H.264 recommended bitrate
2160p (4K), 60 fps 35 Mbps 50 Mbps
2160p (4K), 30 fps 30 Mbps 42 Mbps
1440p, 60 fps 24 Mbps 34 Mbps
1440p, 30 fps 15 Mbps 21 Mbps
1080p, 60 fps 12 Mbps 17 Mbps
1080p, 30 fps 10 Mbps 14 Mbps
720p, 60 fps 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p, 30 fps 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
480p, 30 fps 3 Mbps 4 Mbps
360p, 30 fps 3 Mbps 4 Mbps

These are live-stream encoder recommendations, not bitrates for files uploaded as regular YouTube videos. YouTube’s live settings page also lists minimums: for H.264, 8 Mbps at 720p30 and 720p60, 14 Mbps at 1080p30, 17 Mbps at 1080p60, 42 Mbps at 4K30 and 50 Mbps at 4K60; for AV1 or H.265, the corresponding values are 6, 6, 10, 12, 30 and 35 Mbps. Do not treat a minimum as a separate higher-quality target: select the recommended value for your chosen stream settings.

How much upload speed do you need?

Compare the combined outgoing stream bitrate with realistic, measured upload capacity. YouTube’s general network guidance recommends leaving a 20% margin: as the help page puts it, “Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” This is a recommendation, not a guarantee against congestion, ISP variation or connectivity interruptions. Download speed alone does not answer the question; it is often higher than outbound capacity. See YouTube’s network and streaming tips.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Calculate the headroom

  1. Add the configured bitrate for the primary stream and any backup stream.
  2. Multiply that total by 1.2 to calculate a simple target that leaves 20% headroom.
  3. Compare the target with upload speed measured under conditions similar to the live stream, including typical network use by other devices.

For example, a 10 Mbps primary stream plus a 10 Mbps backup sends 20 Mbps of stream traffic. Applying 20% headroom gives a simple upload target of approximately 24 Mbps. This is arithmetic based on YouTube’s guidance, not a tested performance result. A shared or unstable connection may require more capacity or a different setup.

Is 10 Mbps upload enough for 1080p?

It depends on the frame rate, codec and backup configuration. YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for 1080p30 AV1 or H.265, and 14 Mbps for 1080p30 H.264; for 1080p60, its recommendations are 12 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 and 17 Mbps for H.264. A measured 10 Mbps upload therefore does not meet those recommended bitrate figures, even before allowing headroom. The actual bitrate and stable outbound capacity matter—not the resolution label by itself.

Plan for multiple destinations separately

If you send the same event to multiple platforms, add the target bitrate for every destination. YouTube’s guidance for simulstreaming recommends upload capacity 1.5 to 2 times the combined target bitrates, particularly on shared connections. For example, targets of 6 Mbps and 4 Mbps total 10 Mbps; the cited guidance suggests aiming for 15–20 Mbps upload. This more conservative range is specifically for multiple destinations and differs from YouTube’s general 20% headroom recommendation for a stream. See YouTube’s simulstreaming guidance.

Set encoder and connection options

Use the values below as YouTube’s general encoder recommendations, then check that your encoder exposes and applies them to the correct stream.

  • Bitrate mode: CBR (constant bitrate), using the recommended value for your codec, resolution and frame rate.
  • Frame rate: Up to 60 fps. Use the table row matching the rate you will actually send.
  • Keyframes: Set a 2-second interval; do not exceed 4 seconds.
  • Audio: AAC or MP3. For stereo, YouTube’s advanced guidance specifies 44.1 kHz sampling and 128 kbps. For 5.1 surround, it specifies 48 kHz and 384 kbps.

Audio settings are separate from the video bitrate. If your encoder displays a total outgoing bitrate, include audio and any other stream traffic when checking capacity; do not mistake the video recommendation alone for the entire network load.

Test before going live

  1. Measure upload capacity, not only download speed. Run the check on the connection and device you plan to stream from, with normal household or workplace network use in mind.
  2. Set the encoder to the intended codec, resolution, frame rate and bitrate. Include a backup stream in your bandwidth calculation if you will use one.
  3. Run a private or otherwise appropriate test before the public event. Include audio and movement representative of the real stream; a static screen or silent test may not reveal the same problems.
  4. While live, monitor YouTube’s stream health and read any warnings or messages. A good speed-test result does not guarantee a stable stream throughout an event.

YouTube recommends testing before starting and monitoring stream health during the broadcast. Its help pages surfaced on 2026-10-03 and do not show a publication date in the retrieved material; the recommendations may change.

Common problems and what to check

  • Stream drops or reports connection problems: Check measured outbound capacity and whether other devices or applications are using the shared connection. Confirm that combined primary and backup traffic fits with headroom; connectivity disruptions can interrupt a stream.
  • Upload test looks fast, but the stream struggles: Confirm the test measures upload, not download, and repeat under typical network load. A momentary result does not establish that capacity will remain available during the event.
  • Video looks poor despite sufficient upload capacity: Check that the encoder is actually sending the selected resolution and frame rate, and that its codec and bitrate match the appropriate YouTube recommendation. Network capacity is not a substitute for correct encoder settings.
  • One stream works, but simulstreaming does not: Add the bitrate for each destination and use YouTube’s 1.5–2× upload planning range for multiple destinations rather than the general 20% buffer.

Or let it run in the cloud
