The metaverse did not vanish, but the grand promise promoted in 2021 and 2022 never arrived. No single, shared 3D internet emerged where people routinely worked, socialized, shopped, and moved between worlds. Instead, VR remained a specialized activity, Meta shifted its emphasis, and virtual experiences that did find audiences tended to be called games, creator platforms, or spatial-computing tools.
The metaverse was a vision, not one product
In October 2021, Facebook renamed itself Meta and presented immersive computing as a possible next major platform. The term “metaverse” came to describe a persistent, shared 3D internet: people would enter with avatars, carry identity and digital possessions between services, and move between work, entertainment, shopping, and social life. Meta’s announcement helped put the concept at the center of technology coverage.
But the word was used for very different things. It might mean a VR headset, a social world such as Horizon Worlds, a game with user-created spaces, an augmented-reality interface, a virtual office, or a blockchain world selling digital land. Many products had avatars or virtual events without offering persistence or meaningful interoperability. That made “the metaverse” difficult to assess: a successful game could be declared proof it had arrived, while an empty VR world could be treated as a failure of the whole idea.

|---|---|---|
| Hardware | Meta Quest, Apple Vision Pro | Headsets and spatial interfaces continued to develop, but did not become everyday devices for most people. |
| Social VR | Horizon Worlds, VRChat, Rec Room | Communities persist, but this remains a more specialized way to socialize than phones, games, or video calls. |
| Social gaming | Roblox, Fortnite, Minecraft | Shared worlds and creator-made experiences attracted large audiences, generally as games available on familiar devices. |
| Enterprise spatial tools | Training, design, simulation, digital twins | These can solve specific problems without requiring a universal public virtual world. |
| Blockchain worlds | Decentraland, The Sandbox | Virtual land and token speculation drew attention, but did not establish broad everyday use. |
| Emerging interfaces | Smart glasses, AI wearables, augmented reality | Companies increasingly focused on more ambient computing rather than asking people to spend hours in a headset. |
Why the boom happened—and why it cooled
The 2021–22 surge brought together Meta’s rebrand, pandemic-era interest in remote work and virtual events, NFT enthusiasm, venture investment, and competition to define the next computing interface. Forecasts assigned enormous future value to the category. Yet the industry was often selling a destination before it had a product that gave ordinary users a compelling reason to go there.

VR has genuine strengths for games, fitness, simulation, visualization, and some training. But a headset must be charged, fitted, worn, and kept up to date. It can be uncomfortable, isolating, or disorienting; users cannot interact with a room as naturally as they can without one. A social platform also needs active friends, creators, and worthwhile content at the same time. New virtual worlds had to build those network effects while competing with established games and social services.
“Attend a meeting as a cartoon avatar” was not, for many people, a clear improvement over a video call. Nor did a virtual land parcel become useful simply because it was scarce or represented by a token. The broad vision faced practical friction, weak everyday use cases, fragmented platforms, and hard questions about moderation, safety, and who controls users’ identities and goods.
Meta changed direction, but did not simply shut everything down
Meta’s Reality Labs is not just Horizon Worlds. It includes Quest hardware, software, augmented- and virtual-reality research, and wearables. Its enormous operating losses therefore should not be described as money spent on one social app. Meta’s 2025 Form 10-K reported a roughly $19.2 billion Reality Labs operating loss for the year and said the company expected 2026 losses to remain similar. The filing also described a continuing long-term effort around Quest, Horizon, augmented reality, and wearables, alongside major investment in AI.

The allocation signals a changed emphasis: Meta expected about 70% of Reality Labs operating expenses in 2026 to go toward wearables and 30% toward VR and Horizon initiatives. That is a forecast, not a reported final allocation. It suggests the company was pursuing a broader “next computing platform” strategy rather than betting everything on people living in a VR social world.
Horizon’s product status has also been unsettled. In March 2026, Meta announced changes that shifted emphasis toward the mobile app, removed some subscription perks, and said new or updated VR worlds would no longer be publishable after June 15. Meta’s announcement described a streamlined Quest experience. Later, TechCrunch and Ars Technica reported that Meta retained a limited VR version rather than removing it outright. The careful conclusion is not that Horizon simply shut down: Meta reduced the strategic importance of its original VR-world-building model and leaned toward mobile, games, and a narrower VR offering.
TechCrunch also reported that Meta cut roughly 1,500 Reality Labs jobs in early 2026 and reduced support for several VR studios. That, combined with the financial results and shift toward wearables, is evidence of a pullback from the original scale of ambition—not proof that Meta abandoned every form of immersive computing.

Virtual worlds survived where the use case was clear
Roblox is a useful counterexample to the claim that people do not want shared virtual experiences. The company reported an average of 127 million daily active users and 123.9 billion hours engaged during 2025; its fourth-quarter average reached 144 million daily active users. These are company-reported figures across platforms including phones, desktop, and consoles, not a direct measure of headset-based VR use. See the 2025 filing and Q4 shareholder letter.
Roblox is better described as a large user-generated social gaming platform with metaverse-like features, not as proof that the open, interoperable 3D internet arrived. Its appeal rests on play, a large existing audience, creator tools, and access through devices people already own. Fortnite, Minecraft, VRChat, and Rec Room likewise show that persistent communities and user-created experiences can thrive in particular contexts without one shared identity or inventory that works everywhere.
Enterprise uses followed a different path. Training, equipment maintenance, medical education, design reviews, factory simulation, remote assistance, and digital twins can justify 3D tools when they address a measurable task. They do not need a public virtual city or a universal avatar system. These applications are less visible than consumer hype, but the narrower purpose makes them easier to evaluate.

Virtual land and NFTs were not the whole metaverse
Blockchain projects such as Decentraland and The Sandbox were often presented as a route to user ownership: people could buy virtual land, hold tokens, and move assets between worlds. In practice, the speculative market often overshadowed the experience. Token prices were volatile; onboarding wallets could be difficult; security and regulatory risks mattered; and promised interoperability ran into technical, legal, and commercial barriers.
Digital ownership inside one platform is also different from portable ownership across platforms. A purchase may be controlled by a particular service, while a token may prove a transaction without ensuring that another world will recognize or support the asset. A lively creative community, a marketplace, and a speculative asset market are distinct things, even when all are described as “the metaverse.”

AI did not replace the metaverse in a literal sense, but it became a more immediate technology story. AI services can reach users through phones and browsers, offer visible utility, and fit into products people already use. Meta’s annual filing puts AI among its central priorities while still describing immersive computing as a longer-term effort.

AI could make virtual environments more useful by helping create worlds, powering non-player characters, translating speech, personalizing instruction, or supporting voice-driven avatars. But better software does not by itself make a headset comfortable, create a dense community, or persuade people to spend time in a virtual space.
How to judge the next “metaverse” claim
Ignore the label at first and ask practical questions:
- Do people return? Regular, unprompted use matters more than a launch event or a token price.
- Can people participate easily? A phone, PC, or console audience is a very different proposition from a headset-only one.
- Is there a reason to be there? Look for compelling games, useful tools, or active communities beyond a demonstration.
- Can creators sustain their work? A platform needs both content and a way for creators to benefit from making it.
- Are safety and moderation credible? Live 3D spaces bring real challenges around harassment, fraud, and children’s safety.
- What does “ownership” mean? Check whether identity or goods actually work across services, or only inside one platform.
- Does the business depend on use or speculation? Durable demand is a stronger signal than rising prices for virtual property.
What comes next: less one destination, more useful pieces
Three paths remain plausible, and they can coexist. First, spatial computing may become infrastructure: people encounter 3D interfaces and content through ordinary apps rather than entering one branded world. Second, gaming platforms may continue to absorb the most successful parts of the vision—shared spaces, events, avatars, and creator-made experiences. Third, lighter smart glasses and AI assistants could make computing more ambient and socially acceptable than a headset, though that is a possibility, not a guaranteed revival.
Apple Vision Pro helped popularize the term “spatial computing,” but a polished premium headset is not the same thing as mass adoption. Demonstrations can be impressive without establishing a daily consumer use case. The available evidence here does not support a definitive claim about its current sales or whether it has succeeded or failed as a product category.
The most accurate reading is that the metaverse was a speculative umbrella covering technologies with very different prospects. The unified, headset-centered world did not arrive on the promised timetable. Gaming, VR, 3D design, enterprise simulation, AR, and wearables continued in more specific forms—and users and companies increasingly judged them by what they could actually do, not by whether they fit a grand label.
