Yes, the website was real—but it was not an all-knowing AI beauty meter. The 2016 service was called HowHot.io. Associated with the Blinq photo app and the University of Zurich, it analyzed an uploaded photograph and returned a playful attractiveness label, an estimated age, and an estimated gender.
The original HowHot.io address no longer hosts the test. As of August 18, 2026, it redirects to Merantix Capital, an AI investment and venture-studio company. The old experiment should therefore be treated as a discontinued or unavailable historical curiosity—not a current online tool.
What was HowHot.io?
The website described in the viral headline was HowHot.io, sometimes presented in headlines as a “Hot Or Not” experiment. Contemporary coverage published on February 1, 2016, and updated on May 11, 2016, connected it with the Blinq photo app and the University of Zurich.

At the time, the site presented itself as entertainment and warned users not to take its judgment too seriously. That disclaimer was appropriate: the system produced a prediction about a photograph, not a definitive statement about a person.
How did the test work?
Users uploaded a photograph, after which the system reportedly returned three types of information:
- an attractiveness category;
- an estimated age; and
- an estimated gender.
The six reported attractiveness labels were:

The labels were deliberately dramatic and gamified. “Godlike” was not a scientific unit, and the categories were not part of a recognized scale for measuring physical attractiveness.

How was the AI score generated?
According to the contemporaneous report, the algorithm was based on photographs from the Switzerland-based Blinq community.

That description suggests a system learning patterns from a particular pool of images and the preferences or judgments represented in that community. It does not demonstrate that the system had discovered a universal definition of beauty.
It is also important not to overstate what is known. The available coverage does not establish the model’s architecture, dataset size, labeling method, accuracy rate, demographic composition, or independent validation. Calling it “AI” or a machine-learning-based image-analysis system is reasonable in the context of the 2016 reporting, but there is no evidence that it understood attractiveness in a human or objective sense.
A prediction is not an objective measurement
HowHot.io’s output belonged primarily to the category of image classification: it assigned a label to a photograph. That is different from proving an attractiveness judgment, which varies between people and societies. It is very different from an objective measurement, which would require a stable reference scale, transparent methodology, and repeatable validation.
A single photograph can substantially change the result. Lighting, camera quality, angle, cropping, facial expression, hairstyle, makeup, facial hair, clothing, and image resolution may all influence what an algorithm detects. The same person could plausibly receive different labels from different photographs.

The reported reliance on a Switzerland-based Blinq community also creates a representativeness problem. A model influenced by one geographically and socially specific image pool may reproduce that group’s preferences. Those preferences cannot automatically be generalized across cultures, ages, ethnic backgrounds, presentation styles, facial differences, or individual tastes.
Age and gender estimates have their own limitations. They can be wrong, and errors may be unevenly distributed when some groups are less represented in the examples used to build or calibrate a system. A plausible-looking result is not evidence that the underlying prediction is reliable.
What did the site claim about privacy?
The 2016 report said the website claimed that uploaded images were not saved and that results were not shown for underage people. Those statements should be treated as claims reported at the time, not as independently audited privacy guarantees.
“We do not save images” would not answer every privacy question. A service could still process an image temporarily, create server or browser logs, use third-party analytics, retain metadata, or store derived information and backups. The original privacy policy and technical implementation cannot be confirmed from the currently redirected domain.

A face photograph should be treated as sensitive personal information even when a website describes its service as harmless entertainment. Uploading somebody else’s image without permission would raise additional privacy and consent concerns. Since the old test is no longer available at its original address, readers should not upload selfies to replacement domains or lookalike services without checking who operates them, what they retain, and how they use biometric-related data.

Apparently not at its original address. The HowHot.io domain now redirects to Merantix Capital. The current destination describes Merantix Capital as an AI-focused venture studio and investment firm, not as a selfie-rating service.
That does not establish a definitive shutdown date or explain exactly when the old experiment disappeared. It does establish the practical answer for anyone following the archived headline: the original HowHot.io experience is not currently presented at that URL.
How should the experiment be judged?
Five questions provide a useful test for claims like this:

- Transparency: Were the dataset, labels, model, and validation method disclosed? The available coverage does not establish that they were.
- Representativeness: Did the examples reflect the full range of people and presentation styles the system would encounter? The report identifies only a Switzerland-based Blinq community as its image source.
- Reliability: Would the same person receive the same result in different photographs? That is not documented.
- Validity: Did the result measure attractiveness, or reproduce patterns in prior ratings? The latter is the safer interpretation.
- Privacy: Were images, metadata, logs, and derived predictions retained? The contemporary report records the site’s claims but does not independently verify them.
On those standards, HowHot.io is best understood as a novelty image-rating experiment. It may have been entertaining, but its labels were not objective facts about beauty, desirability, or personal worth.
The verdict
The viral story was real, but the headline oversold what the technology could do. HowHot.io existed in 2016, analyzed selfies, and returned labels ranging from “Hmm..” to “Godlike,” along with estimated age and gender. Its reported algorithm reflected patterns from a specific community rather than a universal standard.
There is no documented basis in the available coverage for treating the result as scientifically accurate or culturally universal. The original URL now redirects elsewhere, so the service should be regarded as a historical experiment rather than an active AI attractiveness test.
