What happened to Sig Hansen?
Hansen’s first reported heart attack occurred in March 2016 while he was filming the Discovery series. He later described being evacuated from Dutch Harbor and said the experience changed how he viewed fishing and his life. Two later events are often blurred together in coverage: TV Insider reported a second, slight heart attack in October 2018, while the Season 21 finale in 2025 showed a collapse and a trip back to port for evaluation. The 2025 episode recap reported concerning symptoms, but did not establish a heart-attack diagnosis.

What happened during the 2016 heart attack?
In his TVLine interview, Hansen said the crew was near shore when he became ill and that he was evacuated from Dutch Harbor. He recalled sharp pain behind his chest and said he was working to adjust to medication prescribed by doctors. He also described the fishing season as unusually difficult.

Hansen attributed part of the episode to smoking and the rest to hereditary or genetic factors. That was his explanation in the interview, not an independently established account of medical causation. Discovery later featured the event in Sig Hansen Legacy, Season 12, Episode 19, listed by Apple TV as released August 23, 2016. Apple TV’s episode listing describes it as a story about how the heart attack changed his outlook on life and fishing.
What was the 2018 heart attack?
TV Insider’s retrospective says Hansen experienced a second, “slight” heart attack in October 2018 after an allergic reaction to an antibiotic he was taking for a sinus infection. The outlet said he discussed the incident on the show and in interviews. Because this detail comes from a retrospective entertainment report rather than a published clinical record, it is best understood as what TV Insider reported, not as independently verified medical documentation.
Was the 2025 collapse another heart attack?
The available report does not say that it was. In its October 31, 2025 recap of the Season 21 finale, TV Insider described Hansen feeling dizzy, experiencing tightness in his chest and shoulder pain, and being found on the floor with vomit nearby. His son-in-law, Clark Pederson, consulted a cardiology specialist by phone, and the crew returned Hansen to port for evaluation.
According to the same recap, Hansen told a doctor he had been awake for about a day and a half and had consumed roughly 15–20 cups of coffee. The recap said he was still smoking and that the doctor encouraged him to quit, reduce caffeine and consider whether continuing to fish was wise. These details describe the episode and the outlet’s account of the conversation; they do not supply a diagnosis for the collapse.

What has Hansen said about his health and retirement?
In an August 2025 interview with Parade, Hansen said doctors had told him his heart was “20 percent stronger.” The interview did not provide an underlying measurement or explain the comparison, so the figure is a statement attributed to Hansen, not independently verified clinical data. He also said he had quit smoking and returned to it at times. Parade’s August 2025 interview.
His public comments about retirement have shifted. In August 2025, he said he expected to fish for a few more years while becoming more open to retirement and family time; he was quoted as saying, “I think I’ve got a few more years left in me.” In a June 5, 2026 report, he said, “I don’t see retiring anytime soon.” TV Insider’s 2025 report and TV Insider’s June 2026 report document those comments at different points in time.

Is Sig Hansen still on Deadliest Catch?
Discovery’s official show page lists Season 22 episodes, and Hansen was discussing his future with the series in 2026. That establishes public participation and comments about work, not that he has been medically cleared or reveals his private current health status. Discovery’s official Deadliest Catch page.
The clearest distinction is between Hansen’s two reported heart attacks—in 2016 and 2018—and the 2025 collapse, for which the cited episode coverage reported evaluation but no heart-attack diagnosis.
