Spoilers for “Silent Mode.” In Season 3, Episode 6, Carrie finally asks why she and Aidan waited so long to talk about what their five-year separation meant. It is a welcome moment of clarity—but it reveals their incompatible assumptions without resolving them.

What Carrie finally says to Aidan

Aidan visits Carrie after a family disruption involving his son, and the conversation takes a painful turn when he tells her he slept with his ex-wife, Kathy. The confession brings an old ambiguity into focus: during the five years they were apart, Aidan understood that they were waiting for each other exclusively. Carrie did not.

As reported in Chelsey Sanchez’s Harper’s Bazaar recap, Carrie says, “I’m having a harder time understanding why we have not had this discussion until now.” The line shifts the hurt from the confession alone to the silence around it. The problem is not simply that they remember the separation differently; it is that they never established what either of them was promising.

That is the episode’s most satisfying exchange. Carrie does not pretend the mismatch is harmless, but she names the question that has been sitting beneath it. Her clarity is not the same as closure: the conversation exposes their different expectations without producing a shared agreement about what comes next.

Does the unresolved conversation feel earned?

The scene works because it makes a vague grievance concrete. “Waiting” sounded like a mutual understanding to Aidan and something else to Carrie. Once that difference is spoken aloud, the couple has an actual issue to confront rather than a cloud of insinuation. Erica Gonzales’s ELLE recap reports Carrie responding to Aidan’s confession with, “I understand how that could happen.” That measured response keeps the exchange from becoming a simple verdict on who is right; it does not, however, supply the missing terms.

My reservation is that the clarity arrives late enough to feel both plausible and convenient. Their long, complicated history gives the missed conversation emotional weight, but the show is also asking viewers to accept that two people with so much history never clarified what a five-year pause meant. The scene earns its discomfort; whether it earns the delay is less certain. The episode lets the uncertainty remain instead of turning one candid question into a repaired relationship.

How the other storylines fit

“Silent Mode” is not solely a Carrie-and-Aidan hour. Carrie’s downstairs neighbor Duncan invites her to read his writing, and they agree to exchange first chapters. Miranda and Joy move forward in their relationship, while Lisa is grieving her father and facing tension with his longtime colleague Lucille. These threads give the episode a wider portrait of people negotiating intimacy, change and loss, though Carrie and Aidan’s overdue conversation remains its emotional center.
