A March 2026 profile places him at his workshop in Dripping Springs, Texas, where he continues to build motorcycles alongside custom firearms, knives and other vehicles. He says he now takes on only three or four motorcycle builds a year.
What happened to West Coast Choppers?
The original West Coast Choppers shop in Long Beach closed in 2010. ABC News reported the closure in a 2011 account that also covered James’s move to Texas and the intense attention surrounding the end of his marriage to Sandra Bullock. The events overlapped, but that reporting does not establish that the personal controversy alone caused the shop to close. ABC News’ 2011 report provides the contemporaneous account.
That closure marked a change in scale, not the end of James’s work as a builder. A 2026 profile says the California operation had once employed 200 people at one time, a figure James gave in the interview rather than an independently audited staffing count. He described a point when he was managing the larger business instead of doing the fabrication himself. Autostrada Magazine’s March 3, 2026 profile recounts that shift.
What did Jesse James do after leaving Long Beach?
After the closure, James moved to the Austin area and worked with Austin Speed Shop. ABC News reported that chapter in 2011, and Discovery’s Jesse James: Outlaw Garage documented him working on vintage vehicles there. Discovery’s page describes the show’s premise; it does not establish whether the program is currently available to stream.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
James also became a focus of tabloid coverage after his marriage to Bullock ended. In a 2011 ABC News interview, he discussed the divorce and losing contact with the child he and Bullock had been in the process of adopting; Bullock later adopted the child as a single parent. Those are statements from that period, not evidence of their relationship today.
In December 2011, the Los Angeles Times described James’s reputational collapse alongside his return to motorcycle fabrication. He said then, “People are tired of hearing about my personal life and ready to see me work again…. People have almost forgot that I am one of the best in the world at what I do.” The quote reflects his position at the time, not a current statement. The Los Angeles Times profile places it in that context.

Where is Jesse James now, and what is he building?
Autostrada Magazine’s March 2026 profile places James’s workshop in Dripping Springs, Texas. It reports that West Coast Choppers, Jesse James Firearms Unlimited and Jesse James Culinary share the property. The profile describes James working on custom motorcycles, firearms, knives and vehicles.
James told the magazine, “We’re doing three of four bikes a year and I don’t really want to do more than that.” He said he prefers to focus on completing a small number of builds to his standard rather than increasing volume. The profile presents the Texas setup as a way for him to spend more time directly working on projects and less time managing a large operation.

Is West Coast Choppers still operating?
The latest profile places a West Coast Choppers operation on James’s Texas property, but it does not detail the company’s corporate ownership. A June 2026 LegalClarity article reports that the brand reopened in Austin in 2013 and remains James’s. That ownership and reopening account is secondary reporting, so it is best treated as a reported history rather than an independently confirmed corporate record. LegalClarity’s 2026 account covers that claim.
