Jeff Buckley died in a drowning accident in Memphis on May 29, 1997. The official account says he was swept away by the undertow of a passing boat while swimming in the Wolf River. He was in Memphis developing music for a follow-up to his album Grace, a project he did not finish.

A contemporary Irish Times report published June 7, 1997 gave more detail, citing Sony Music and Memphis authorities. It said Buckley and his friend Keith Foti stopped near a marina on the evening of May 28. Buckley entered the water fully clothed while boats were passing and creating waves. Foti briefly turned away to move a radio and cassette player; when he looked back, Buckley was gone. Authorities were reported as believing that the undertow from passing boats had swept him away.
When did he disappear, and when did he die?
The dates are described differently in the sources. The Irish Times account places Buckley’s disappearance on the evening of May 28. His official biography and FAQ give May 29, 1997, as the date of his death or the accident. A careful timeline distinguishes the reported disappearance from the date the official sources record.

What was Jeff Buckley doing in Memphis?
Buckley was developing songs for a follow-up to Grace, his 1994 debut studio album and the only studio album completed during his lifetime. His official biography says he had recorded sessions for the next project with producer Tom Verlaine, then stayed in Memphis during March and April 1997 to work on songs and make home recordings for his band. He had been performing regularly in the city; his last show was at Barrister’s on May 26. On the night he died, he was on his way to meet his band for rehearsals.
What happened to the unfinished album?
The follow-up was being developed under the working title My Sweetheart, The Drunk, but Buckley did not complete it. Recordings from the project were released posthumously in 1998 as Sketches (For My Sweetheart The Drunk). It is distinct from Grace, the finished album released during his lifetime. What is known about speculation surrounding his death?
The Irish Times reported at the time that Memphis authorities said there was no evidence of drug or alcohol abuse. That is a report of what authorities said, not a substitute for an official autopsy or investigative record. Buckley’s mother, Mary Guibert, urged people not to speculate beyond the known facts. The official FAQ reproduces her statement: “It has become apparent to me that my son will not be walking out of the river,” she said. “It is now time to make plans for a life that was golden. I ask people who cared about Jeff to please be honourable and faithful to his memory, to send their best wishes to Jeff and to all of us who are mourning his passing.”
