Hwang In-ho was a police officer whose wife’s acute cirrhosis, need for a liver transplant, and pregnancy pushed the family into financial crisis. After losing his job, he entered the games, won, and was traumatized by the violence. He later became the Front Man. In Season 2, he secretly returns as Player 001, “Young-il,” to destroy Gi-hun’s faith that people can change. The finale shows that he remains responsible for the games but has not entirely lost his capacity for compassion.
Who Hwang In-ho was before the games
In-ho began as a police officer, husband, and expectant father. His wife developed acute cirrhosis and needed a liver transplant. When the couple discovered she was pregnant, doctors advised terminating the pregnancy, but they chose to continue it.
The treatment was expensive, and In-ho borrowed money while trying to keep his wife alive. His superiors interpreted the money as a bribe and dismissed him despite his years of service. He was also unable to sell one of his kidneys to raise funds because his brother, Hwang Jun-ho, had previously donated a kidney to him.
These pressures stripped In-ho of his career and financial security before he ever entered the competition.

What happened to In-ho when he entered the games
In-ho became a contestant and ultimately won. Winning did not save him psychologically. He had witnessed and participated in the games’ violence, leaving him traumatized and convinced that humanity could not be trusted. Actor Lee Byung-hun describes this progression as turning In-ho into “an emotionless man deprived of any hope towards humanity.”
The official accounts explain how the experience changed his outlook, but they do not show every step between his victory and his appointment as the Front Man. There is no established recruitment scene or stated date for that transition.

Why In-ho became the Front Man
Personal desperation became a worldview
In-ho’s transformation combines private loss with what he endured as a player. He lost his police career while pursuing lifesaving treatment, then survived a contest that required contestants to accept—or inflict—lethal violence. His trauma hardened into a belief that people ultimately abandon their principles when enough pressure is applied.
He believes society is built on rulers and obedience
Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk presents the adult In-ho as someone trying to prove that human history repeats a hierarchy of rulers and those who obey. The Front Man therefore treats the games as evidence for his theory, not merely as a job or a way to kill Gi-hun.

Why the Front Man was Player 001 in Season 2
After Gi-hun returns to challenge the competition, In-ho takes the Player 001 slot under the name Young-il. His objective is to test and undermine Gi-hun’s belief that people can change and that the games can be stopped.
In-ho is not primarily interested in whether Gi-hun lives or dies. As Lee Byung-hun explains in Netflix Tudum’s interview, the Front Man wants to dismantle Gi-hun’s “noble belief” and make him become like himself. Their conflict is a contest between Gi-hun’s hope and In-ho’s conviction that hope is naïve.

What happens to In-ho in Season 3 and the finale
| Point in the story | In-ho’s action | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| During the renewed games | He resumes control and pressures Gi-hun toward violence. | He is still committed to the system and to disproving Gi-hun. |
| After Gi-hun refuses to kill the other players | Gi-hun maintains his principles and dies. | In-ho’s attempt to make Gi-hun surrender fails. |
| Immediately afterward | In-ho saves Jun-hee’s baby. | His conduct suggests a remaining moral impulse, despite his crimes. |
| Six months later | He leaves the baby and her winnings with Jun-ho. | He removes the child from the games and entrusts her care to someone outside them. |
| After leaving Korea | He takes Gi-hun’s money to Gi-hun’s daughter in Los Angeles. | He shows respect for Gi-hun without renouncing his role as Front Man. |
Netflix’s Season 2 ending explanation and its Season 3 finale explanation establish these events.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does saving the baby redeem the Front Man?
No. Saving Jun-hee’s baby and returning Gi-hun’s money reveal residual humanity, but they do not erase In-ho’s control of the games or the deaths caused by the system he runs. Lee Byung-hun interprets the baby decision as proof that “that last remaining piece of humanity” still exists. Hwang Dong-hyuk describes the return of Gi-hun’s belongings as a gesture of respect.

In-ho’s relationship with Gi-hun
The Front Man both hates and admires Gi-hun. He admires Gi-hun’s refusal to accept the games as inevitable, yet hates what that refusal implies about his own surrender to the system. Hwang has described this relationship as deeply conflicted. In-ho’s experiment fails because Gi-hun dies without abandoning his principles, leaving the Front Man unable to prove that everyone eventually submits.
